Taking fish out of the water for fishing then letting them go is weird to me. It's something I can not understand.

Food is different, because if its going to happen, it will happen.

But fishing to put them back is odd, because I bet the lil guy was trying to go on with his day - imagine walking down the street and getting caught, captured by force and waterborded, then let go again and just having to go on with your day?? Like oh... poor fish.

Catch and release is better than to catch and in an overzealous way, kill. Only to waste, if given the option between the two.

Why do humans value their sport more than another creatures life? Why do humans believe they're more than other species.

They're not. We are not.

All living things are, in terms of being worthy to live, equal. Mammal or not, cold or warm blooded, animal or insect.

Humans, despite their brains, are not, NOT more important than animals. And I will never understand how we can harm other living things for entertainments sake.

Why must humans, we as humans, not only kill each other but bring other animals into it. Innocent animals, Innocent children, generation after generation, the cycle continues. The future is rather dim, because we are in charge of it. Humans will continue to hunt, use and waste the lives of not only each other, but every other species, and after that?

What then?

When we too begin to perish, and face extinction. We shall seek blame in anything else other than ourselves. Anything but our collective unwillingness to act. Because that, is engraved in to our nature, and historically we have always chosen ignorance instead of peace and change when given the chance.

Humans, are equal, no. Humans are less than animals because of our unwillingness to see every life, small or large, insect or mammal, as worthy of love and peace.

And I believe that is why we are cruel to eachother.

Connection with nature shouldn't involve destroying it, in all of its beauty. Connection with eachother should not involve fucking it up for uninvolved living things.

Humans are not superior due to the self serving metrics WE invented.

Humans will kill this species, along side every other. I don't believe this can be prevented, i believe its inevitable. But on the contrary, I also believe it can be postponed.

But that is on us. No matter the outcome it is on us as humans. Because if humans want to believe we are superior, instead of harming other animals we need to fight for them.

Here are few reasons I've seen people disagree, or reasons I've seen people defend catch and release:

Conservation, which can be good for biodiversity, Connection with nature, the reasoning of 'fish don’t suffer like we do', Cultural and personal meaning/community and my least favourite, Comparative harm...

And here's what I have to say on that,

Well, why must we enjoy that as entertainments, Why this?

Why do we believe other animals live for us. They are living, how can we know what's going through their brains? What they feel, if and what they think.

Why does cruelty stop where we as humans deem it does, why is a snail or a fish not as worthy of a pain free life as a dog or a human.

However for point number two, I do understand where they are coming from. When people feel close to nature they're more likely to protect it.

Though isn't that selfish? Isn't that proving my point? We need reason to look after the place we're living? We need reason to protect ecosystems?

And we do that by harming the animals that inhabit it?

Are we explaining how we are motivated to protect only if we're close to nature, or is it yet another excuse to put things off unless it benefits us.

The same level of suffering isn't my point, though I understand it is many other people's. That fish do not feel the same level of pain, that we are different or special for our ability to suffer.

Level of suffering is subjective in that matter. If the animals suffering is high, what would it equate to in our terms?

If we were fish, if a living creatures suffering was equated to ours, where would it scale on one to ten, when/if subjected to the pain we put other species through?

Can we translate it? Or will people excuse it?

Heritage. right, I don't have much to say on that, nor culture, as that's not what I'm writing about.

I want to reiterate that my point is humans are self serving and will be the end of this planet - as many of us already know. My point is that we do not care, many people do not care.

Am i correct? Or is it that we do not care enough to do anything about it.

Compromises are commendable. Release is a good thing, and it lets people relieve their guilt, whilst promoting them to continue to enjoy animals suffering.

But I urge you to reread my message. Because, despite us having to compromise, this is not that.

This is a list of excuses disguised as reason.

I look at the points made in favour of catch and release, and It does not answer my previously asked question,

Why do we believe we are more than animals.

Because at the end of the day our brains mean nothing when we are not using them for good.

I would also like to say this:

I am no less to blame. I am not superior. I am not important here. No more than anyone else

I'm venting an opinion.

An opinion that has and will lead me to change, for the better.

I am a hypocrite.

I should not be listened to.

But this is my opinion and this is the foot I want to put forward in the world.

And something I would like other people to put forward in the world also.

I can not preach that if I am not working on it myself.

I am not preaching moral superiority, I'm merely putting my opinions and emotions into perspective and hoping I can move forward in a constructive manner..

Are We the Reason Everything Exists?

Personal Perspective: We are the first cause, not the Big Bang.

Forget the "just happened" theory—the parameters of the universe allow for us because we generate them.

Perhaps it would be useful, now and then, to consider the large, collective migrations of various creatures as active expressions of the earth itself. To consider them as slow gestures of a living geology, improvisational experiments that gradually stabilized into habits now necessary to the ongoing metabolism of the sphere. For truly: are not these cyclical pilgrimages — these huge, creaturely hegiras — also pulsations within the broad Body of earth? Are they not ways that divergent places or ecosystems communicate with one another, trading vital qualities essential to their continued flourishing?

Think again of the salmon, this gift born of the rocky gravels and melting glaciers, nurtured by colossal cedars and by tumbled trunks decked with ferns, fungi, and moss, an aquatic, muscled energy strengthening itself in the mossed and forested mountains until it’s ready to be released into the broad ocean. Pouring seaward, it adds itself to that voluminous cauldron of currents spiraling in huge gyres, shaded by algal blooms and charged by faint glissandos of whale song… Until, grown large with the sea’s abundance, this ocean-infused life flows back up the rivers and tributaries and spreads out into the wooded valleys, gifting the hollows and the needled highlands with new minerals and nutrients, feeding bears and osprey and eagles, ensuring that the glinting gift will be reborn afresh from a lump of luminous eggs stashed beneath a layer of pebbles.

This circulation, this systole and diastole, is one of the surest signs that this earth is alive — a rhythmic pulse of silvery, glacier-fed brilliance pouring through various arteries into the wide body of the ocean, circulating and growing there, only to return by various veins to the beating heart of the forest, gravid with new life.

page 179 - I was a technician at the lab, helping conduct experiments on insect eyes, but most of my time was actually spent thinking about consciousness; What is it? Is it only for humans? Do other creatures have it? What about machines?

I wasn’t even thinking about AI. Sure an AI computer was more likely to have consciousness, I figured, but how complex does something need to be to be conscious? If a human or a complex computer could be, could a single-celled amoeba or a single transistor? If not the latter, how much complexity needs to exist before consciousness is possible.

I didn’t know if the organic/inorganic parallel I was drawing made sense. I didn’t actually know that much about AI, and knew nothing about whether or not one existed that was already conscious. My work as a technician was more janitorial than technical, and when I looked at experiment results late at night once everyone had left the lab I did not understand them. I wasn’t traditionally equipped for this undertaking, but the questions consumed me and I went hunting amongst the tools of my job for their answers.
