Meeting 6 - 30.10.12

Documentary Night Yianna Spoke to Tommy and is organising permanently booking a room. Posters advertising the events all need to be approved by the union.

Bonfire Night The possibility of a society event for bonfire night was discussed, there are several displays locally that we could attend as a group.

Camping Organising a camping night is popular amongst members, this will be firther discussed in future meetings.

Seals Katlin suggested an event where the society goes to see seals on the 10th November with an independent organisation. This needs proper investigation.

Guest Lecturer – Simon Watt Simon watt was the society’s choice so he will be officially asked to come to lecture for us. The whole event needs to be organised, room, price, target market, travel costs, meal out, and Simon’s fee etc.

Facebook There is an issue with posting on facebook, many members have complained about the constant unnecessary notifications. The settings of the group are going to be changed and committee members will monitor the page.

For Next Week Sara – Draft poster for the documentary night. Rowan – Send documentary list to Sara, and share password with selected committee members. Tom – Investigate the bonfire night events for the local area. Katlin – Write welcome email (Rowan to check). Sarah, Katlin and Jordan – Write the pub quiz and book room. Chad and Katlin – Plan socials alternating Monday and Thursday.

Guest Lecturers 3 prospective guest lecturers were approached at an open documentary in London, there is a poll going on facebook for members to vote who they would most like to hear from. Birmingham Conference There is a conference in Birmingham, an excellent opportunity for the society to do some networking and to get in contact with possible employers who might like to come on and present to the society. It is on the 14th November, £10 but free for committee members (Yianna, Rowan, Chat and Tom).

Student conference Angela Priestman Emailed Yianna about a student conference being held on the 13th June by John Dover, Yianna is establishing email contact with John to get more information about the conference.

IBMS and astrobiology society Trips/visits to these societies were a popular topic of interest amongst members, will be brought up at future meetings.

Documentary Night The next documentary night is the 30th October, Sara is making posters to advertise and Rowan is picking the documentary at random.

Logo The society’s official logo needs to be decided, they will be put on facebook and members can vote for their favourite via likes.

Student switch off Yianna, Rowan and Katlin are to attend the student switch off training (environmental ambassador).

Pub Quizzes Quizzes will be held once a month, with no less than 3 members writing the questions, they must be themed and thoroughly researched. The next quiz is to be held on the 1st of November and will be written by Jordan, Sarah and Katlin.

OMG Radio Yianna is organising an hour segment for the society on the student radio. Yianna, Rowan, Jenny, Sarah and Katlin are happy to prepare something. For Next Week Rowan – Talk to Tommy at the union to see if we can charge people to see a guest lecturer. Sara – In charge of advertising the event. Katlin – Make the facebook poll.

Biology Quiz

The possibility as Verve for the venue was discussed, and the cost of taking part was suggested to be priced around the region of £2.50. The event can be advertised via posters and the TV screens in the science centre.

Membership The membership fee was decided to be £5, the union will match whatever we make.

Documentary Nights The documentaries are to be picked by the members and for the next meeting everyone is going to bring a suggestion, these will then be picked at random to be watched. Documentaries don’t have to be strictly Biology related but as a Biology society the majority should have a Biological theme.

Biology Week Activity To take part in Biology week the society voted to hold a Biology themed pub quiz in the Ember Lounge.

Logo Everyone has an opportunity to design the logo for the society, suggestions can be brought in or posted to the facebook group.

For next meeting Tom- Talk to Ember Lounge to discuss the possibility of holding the quiz there. Rowan- Download documentary, Genesis. Yianna- Talk to Angela Priestman about times and places to host the documentary night, possibly in the science centre on either Monday or Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:00PM. Tom, Rowan, Yianna – Meet together to research and write the quiz questions.
