last bit of springtime 🌸
Hi lads. With shadow and bone series 2 fast approaching, I think it's time to answer a question on all of our minds?
What is a crow?
I think it's time for a classic game of "is that a crow?" Hosted by someone who is definitely not qualified.
Candidate 1: jackdaw
Not a crow. Crow shaped sure. A little stumpy in places though. Silver around the neck because these guys are just too fancy. In the air, they look pretty darn close to a crow. Always look out for that stubby tail (sorry jackdaw I love you) and smaller wings.
Disclaimer: I do not know a single technical term for anything, I just really like birds.
Candidate 2: raven
Not a crow. Kind of like if a crow could have an emotional phase. Also these fuckers are massive. More of a hooked beak and they don't look as well put together. The big difference everyone will point to when you ask what's the difference (and to that I say how can you compare perfection) is that raven's have a diamond tail rather than a fan tail. In addition to recognising human faces, they are also capable of holding grudges. Legends.
Candidate 3: rook
Not a crow. Metal as hell though. Grey beak because why the hell not. (But seriously if you know anything about corvid beaks hmu) from a field, they look a bit yellow. I once thought a saw one of these but it was just a crow with a beakfull of catkins. From the sky they look quite crow. It's almost like they're related or something.
Candidate 4: chough
Not a crow. This guy isn't even trying. Red beak. Red legs. Too stylish to care. From the sky, again very crow. But their beaks look like tiny chilly peppers. If you see one of these, big fat congratulations.
Candidate 5: hooded crow
It's a crow. I can hear some of saying "A, it took you five birds to get to a crow and I doesn't even look like a crow." 1. You just got to look at five bird pictures. 2. Don't diss the hooded crow. Silver waist coat wearing capturer of my heart. A crow is a crow no matter how complicated.
Candidate 6: carrion crow
It's a crow. Crow shaped. Crow sounding. Fan tail. All black. Kind eyes. A classic for a reason
Thank you for joining me. Together we can correctly identify our corvids. This post is dedicated to magpies and eurasian jays. Forever in our hearts but just not Crow enough.
