Haven’t posted in such a long time! Thanks to everyone still here and for all the messages. Lots of life things happening, I’ve since bought a house, rearranged my collection and been very busy with work and getting my life together. Hoping to get back into hobbies again with the weather improving so I can go explore and start some new projects. I went on a big hike throughout the Shropshire hills whilst away over night and found some amazing things. Lots of the regular sheep, rabbit, pheasant but the highlights were in total 4 huge raven skulls! Much bigger than the usual crows and magpies I’m used to sorting and legal here in the U.K. Never found a raven previously let alone 4. Felt like a little sign to get things moving and connect with the things I enjoy doing again.

a Common Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra) vs a Scottish Crossbill (Loxia scotia). these two were captive-bred hens from here in the UK. despite looking basically identical in-feather (aside from size), theres a lot of complex morphology differences that surprised me!

Cataloguing some birds to add to The Skull Index next week! Left to right: Black Browed Albatross, Black Necked Aracari, Green Aracari, Crimson Rumped Toucanet (x2), White Backed Vulture, African Spotted Eagle Owl, Common Raven, Moluccan Eclectus, Atlantic Puffin, Red Throated Barbet, White Headed Buffalo Weaver, Village Weaver, and Long tailed Broadbill.

Second new skull is the Greenfinch.

This guy is a little battered but a nice chunky skull and is a little bigger than our current Greenfinch.

Greenfinch really feel like a woodland edge kind of species, which is funny cause you dont see them all that frequently. They feed on species youre likely to find in urban areas too which leads more into the theory of woodland edge riders. They like the seeds of fruits, Bramble, Yew, Rose and Hawthorn but they also enjoy a good Sunflower seed.

These birds started making thier way into our gardens too due to supplementary feeding and who can blame them. It does cause them additional complications though unfortunately. But its a big change from thier farmland origins.

Greenfinch are pretty big finches overall, with a large conical beak and a forked tail. Theyre green and yellow with females being duller than the males.
