Dolly rambles Feb 2020

...why yes, the resident babysitter is still in hanfu. XD I've been reluctant to change him out after all the effort of getting him into it. Regardless, he's been tending to baby Soo with aplomb. *approves*

(Side note, the round-collared robe he's wearing stays in place and stands up to being moved around much better than the cross-collared robes Tatsue is in, which tend to slip off the shoulders at the slightest nudge.)

Some BJD stuff I've been looking forward to recently - the release of Guardlove's much-hyped Yo-SD-like 4th-gen body; kindergarten's in-stock release of her 醒醒Xingxing head; receiving the 2D Doll and Akagidoll bodies I have on order; making some cute ribbon-tie sandals; getting a better wig and eyes for Soo, and coming up with a name for him.

I'm also thinking of (finally) learning to knit! I really like knitwear on my dolls but have always been a little afraid of picking it up myself - it’s a different skill set from what I’m used to.  I'm hoping one can jump straight into knitting at doll scale, as I did with dressmaking.  If anyone has any good links or tutorials to recommend for an absolute beginner, feel free to throw them out there~

when you see unoas for the first time at your first meetup and then browse the DoA marketplace for unoas and then discover that a long time ago they made mature 1/6 unoas and that there’s one for sale and that it was in a photostory you admired and long story short i’m getting an unoa light azurite

“I don’t like chubby dolls cause being fat is unhealthy!!!” Cry me a river you piece of trash, suprise suprise being fat is not unhealthy and people are just naturally chubbier than others and being naturally chubbier is not unhealthy at all, and I think it should be represented in dolls because not everyone is a skinny porceline white girl. Anyway fat dolls are lovely and good and if you own/make fat dolls you’re a blessing to the bjd community.

Dolly rambles - face-ups, acquisitions

With the recent arrival of Asai Mira’s Pettimal body, I can’t put off giving her a face-up any longer...!  I’ve set this Sunday aside to get her (maybe his?) face done, and maybe do a temp one for new-girl (SDM Hewitt) while I'm at it.  For Mira, I'll be aiming for delicate and fresh-faced - similar to the sculptor’s own Mira, who made me fall for the sculpt in the first place.  I still find face-ups so time- and focus-consuming, I can't get anything else done for hours...

If the face-upping goes well, I want to take another group picture of all my dolls, short and tall together.

Also, I joined the pre-order for Stars Are Falling's (SAF) new Rin-SP head! He's billed as a 1/4 scale head, but with a head circumference of 18.5cm and eye size of 14/6 (significantly smaller than all my MSD's and very close to Roo, my 35cm tall MiniFee/Chibi Unoa hybrid), I'm hoping he will fit well on the Chibi Unoa body (SAF’s resin is supposed to match well with Alchemic Labo “fresh” skin) and make a good friend who can put up with Roo's, um, idiosyncrasies, shall we say.  (Right now, I'm thinking a mild-mannered bookworm with glasses~~)

I've pre-ordered one of Be With You's (BWY) new 35cm bodies in “normal” skin, and I plan to put Roo on it and give his current Chibi Unoa body to Rin.  The shapeliness of the Chibi Unoa body fits Roo better, but there’s a definitely colour difference with his pinky Fairyland resin, and I’m hoping the BWY will be at least a slightly better match.  It’s so exciting to have a new child-like body in this size range on the market!  I’m looking forward to testing it out and seeing it beside the Chibi Unoa.  I believe BWY dolls have some kind of fancy silicone posing aid in their joints, which will be a nice change from the Chibi Unoa (certainly not the best poser :P).

Beside Rin-SP and the BWY body, my only other incoming doll is Mia’s Smile Soo in her new normal skin, plus an experimental PLA body for it.  (If the PLA body doesn’t work out, I will get one from 2D Doll.)  Soo will be a shy, dark-haired boy of 2 or 3 - I’ve already arranged his wig and eyes.  I’m also eyeing the Kindergarten 1/6-scale head sculpt I linked in a previous post - for a sleepy boy, maybe girl, to nap with Laurie, my Yo-SD Anne Sweet Dream. ... These tinies multiply like flies >_>

Dolly updates (rambles)

So Peter doesn't know it yet, but he should soon be getting a new playmate! *confetti* As you may know, I have been on the lookout for a playmate for Peter for a while now. I had been eyeing one of the LUTS reinterpretations of the Customhouse angel sculpts (Uriel, Hanael, etc.) as a little tanned boy, but never quite made up my mind. Then I saw that Miyadoll was making all their limited sculpts available for order as part of a summer event, and you can pick the body size you like! I have liked a few of their head sculpts for quite a while, but I just couldn't reconcile the proportions of the Little Mocha body (slim 31cm) with my stocky Volks crew (sadly).

So now, a Baby Mocha should be joining the crew. ^_^  I'm envisioning a slightly timid, pale-skinned child~ I like the "milk tea" colour very much, but not for the specific sculpt that I’m getting.  As an owner of all "normal" skintone dolls, though, I'm anxious that cream white skin will look odd beside my pureskin normal dolls (or vice versa D:), or that it'll yellow with a vengeance, or that it'll be harder to paint for an amateur face-up artist like me. Miyadoll's "normal" skintone also looks pretty fair, but then I fear he won't have the look I'm going for. If you care to weigh in, please do~

I also considered getting just the head and putting it on one of the Yo-SD-sized bodies I'm admiring at the moment (Dollits, Cocoriang). I do think their sculpts look more "svelte", and the posing seems top-notch. But hey, little one will be clothed most of the time, and it's nice to give a new-ish company a fair chance and buy a whole doll from them. I notice a dearth of English-language reviews for Miyadoll, particularly the Baby Mocha size, so I will definitely share my thoughts when I get him.

Finally, I have made a last-ditch attempt at glass eyes for Tatsue and put in a special order from 月ノ箱庭‏ (I want to "round off" my current dolls, especially the big ones, before a new doll comes in). I would have ordered a pair for Sui too, but they don't have the right shades in their line-up - her coral-pink eyes continue to elude me. I did, however, also order a standard pair to hopefully stand in for the pair Peter is wearing in the photo above. They are HG Smoke Olive (B) (Yukinojou’s), and popular with both Peter and Shiina (^_^;). I did try smaller eyes in Peter but I keep coming back to this pair - I like how they make him look young and lively. ^^

So I cleaned a batch of heads, after receiving an awesome trade/commission from @saarsyshe and I am in love with this girl and her pouty red lips. I'm going to redo her faceup in a similar style, but with more sparkle. Look how pretty she is! I also cleaned up my winnie dee, but she was horribly unevenly yellowed under her blush, so I'm thinking I might dunk her in some tan dye to hide it. Some of those heads are @myrretah 's and some are mine and that one in the last pic is part of aforementioned commission.
