for black!au how did they meet
The day Eddie meets Evan is a calm Saturday, with everyone hanging out at Athena’s house to drink and enjoy Bobby’s cooking. All the kids are playing outside in the yard- though Eddie keeps a close eye on them just in case- while the adults catch up and swap horror stories from their jobs. He really doesn’t expect for the doorbell to ring.
“Oh!” Maddie gets up on her feet with a helping hand from Chimney, a little unstable this far into her pregnancy. “I completely forgot. My brother is in town and Athena said he could join us!”
Chimney looks at Eddie with wide eyes, mouthing “brother?” with incredulity. Evidently, he didn’t even know such a person existed. Eddie shrugs and watches Maddie and Athena walk over to the door. He expects Maddie’s brother to look like her. Slim, with dark hair and eyes, a little on the short side. It’s Hen who sees him first and lets out a low whistle.
“Eddie, this man is so your type.”
Maddie’s brother steps inside and Eddie’s jaw drops.
The first thing the man does is hand a bottle of wine to Athena as a thank you, followed immediately by pulling Maddie into a firm hug. He has to be at least six feet tall, and he’s built like a brick house with biceps that make Maddie seem like a stick figure in comparison. His hair is a dark blonde that’s been gelled down with care. And his eyes are a bright, beautiful blue that contrast with the pink birth mark next to his eyebrow. He’s gorgeous. As if that wasn’t enough, his face lights up in a million watt smile.
“It’s so nice to meet you all! Maddie talks so much about you.” He walks across the room with an almost cat-like grace to Chimney, who he holds a hand out to. “You must be Howie.”
“Call me Chimney,” Chimney corrects, taking his hand. “I wish I could say the same, but Maddie didn’t tell me she had a brother.”
Maddie’s brother nods, like this makes sense. “That’s hardly a surprise, I’m not around all that much. I’m Evan.”
They all take the cue to introduce themselves one by one, but Eddie is caught up watching Evan. There’s something about him that sets Eddie’s hairs on end; he holds himself like he’s military, and as each person introduces themselves he studies them with a certain intensity that suggests he’s doing more than just cataloguing their faces for his memory.
When it comes to Eddie, he stands up and extends his hand to shake Evan’s. “Eddie Diaz, I work with Chimney.” As an afterthought, to try and prod Buck to open up, he adds, “I served in Afghanistan. You?”
“Thank you for your service. I’m actually not military, but I’ll take the compliment.”
He follows his words with a wink and then focuses back on the group at large. Athena brings him a beer, which Evan appears to sip at immediately, but Eddie recognizes that none of it actually makes it past his lips. Something is definitely up with him. The possibilities race in Eddie’s mind. His first thought is that Buck is LAPD, but he’s a lot stiffer than Athena, and she’s a sergeant. Next is FBI, but there’s no reason that FBI wouldn’t drink, and if Evan was sober like Bobby, he’d just say so. He’s not military. Whatever the reason, there’s something off about Evan that no one else seems to be picking up on.
“So, Evan,” Bobby finally asks, “what do you do for a living?”
Evan’s smile tightens ever so slightly around the edges. It’s so faint that Eddie isn’t even sure if he sees it in the first place. “I’m unemployed right now. I take a lot of temp jobs around the country. Last week, I was doing construction work in Phoenix.”
“What brings you to LA?” Eddie questions.
Before Evan can answer, his phone rings in his pocket. It’s not a modern phone with a touch screen, Eddie notices, but a flip phone with a small digital screen that doesn’t even appear to be backlit. He excuses himself to take it, not even answering the phone until he’s stepped outside. That’s not at all suspicious.
When he doesn’t come back in after a couple minutes, conversation picks up again. Mostly, everyone is asking Maddie questions about her brother, but the more she talks, the less she really seems to say. She won’t give any specifics about Evan’s job, or where he lives, or even what he does in his free time. Right before Eddie can call her out on it, Evan walks back in.
“Good news,” he says, “my next temp job is here in LA, so I’ll be around for a bit.”
Maddie lights up. “Did they say how long?”
“Long enough for an apartment and not a hotel. If I’m lucky, I’ll be around for the birth of my niece.”
Evan leans down to hug her without her having to stand up, and the action allows his shirt to lift just enough for Eddie to catch a glimpse of dark metal tucked into his waistband. His heart leaps into his throat. He chooses not to say anything now, but he resolves that before Evan leaves, he’s going to ask some questions.
