Blind!Adrien AU

So I see this a lot and I like it but it bugs me because it'd make his identity sooooo obvious. Like, we complain about Mari not changing her hair from pigtails being too much of a giveaway.

My personal headcannon of it is that Adrien is blind but can see as Chat Noir. Which would super protect his identity forever as well as the added bonus of giving MariChat fics a real sense of believability that Adrien just hangs out as Chat all the time.

So blind!Adrien and deaf!Marinette, how do you think that would work?

We’ll turn the question back toyou. What do you think?As best as possible we don’t want to romanticize illnesses or disabilities.

Although blind!Adrien stemmed from the idea of how the miraculous would affect the senses, and how a disabled person could be a superhero working around and utilizing what he has to save people - at this point we decided to pick Adrien - the concept was to represent and realistically portray a specific community that exists in real life, and not because “hey imagine what cute stuff we could do if this character had a disability!”

Although there are interesting, informative and yes, even “cute” by-products of our original concept (ie. different plot lines or the reverse love square) these were never meant to be the whole of the story. These things are attracting, true, and it’s a bulk of the fan content. And while a person is NOT their disability, it is also a part of their being.

In our case writing the fic, Adrien’s blindness is acknowledged in the story and important to him as a character but it isn’t the whole of his being.

We do take into account to have enough credible research to back up what we write. But regardless, Adrien’s personality/character is still exactly the same as who he is in the canon universe.

And although some of the characters in-story don’t realize it yet, Adrien is an independent guy with or without the aid of his kwami. And so most his relationships are symmetrical, and his blindness doesn’t make him any less of who he is.

SO in the case of deaf!Mari, you have take into consideration: “am I doing it out of pure amusement?” and “is this the only dimension of the character?”

if deaf!mari was created ONLY as a foil to blind!adrien then we strongly do NOT condone the idea. If otherwise, even with any kind of character, there’s much potential for something great.

TL;DR We personally don’t want to merge those AUs together. As much as possible, we want to avoid romanticization.
