Headcanon

((In the continuity of the early books, the Cohens are the only Jewish family in Bayport. Phil feels alienated from the rest of his peers and the community at large. He and his family are the victims of overt antisemitism, as well as subtler microaggressions, like jokes and comments about thieving Jews. It gets to the point where Phil tells his family he doesn't want to stand out by observing Jewish holidays. He deals with his loneliness by losing himself in art and music.

Frank and Joe Hardy are the first kids who actively want to make friends with him and try to make him feel included in their group of chums. Though they can't really understand what Phil goes through, they try their best to understand and stop their other friends from making fun of him. One year, they got him a gift for Hanukkah, and he could barely believe it. That, and other acts of friendship by the Hardys, make him feel a bit safer.))
