Absolum

Guard Crush Games’ first title, Streets of Fury, featured some surprising depth and playability underneath its goofy digitized aesthetic. Streets of Rage 4 proved to be a brilliant re-invention of the classic franchise that in some ways even outmatched the games of old. Although clearly its own game and its own universe, Absolum takes clear inspiration from games like Golden Axe and Capcom’s Dungeons & Dragons brawlers. Setting the game further apart from previous works are its roguelike elements. While this makes it part of a rather massive pond, the two halves fit together into a fantastic whole.

Worms Clan Wars / Worms Battlegrounds

Worms Clan Wars could perhaps be compared to Worms World Party – a small update from the previous game featuring a bigger focus on multiplayer. While its additions are, to its credit, far more substantial than World Party, Clan Wars is best seen as a refinement on the previous game and its bounty of new ideas. That said, there’s been more than enough improvements made that it wouldn’t be a mistake to pick it up even if you have Revolution in your library. So long as you find a deep discount for it, at least.

Bloody Roar: Primal Fury

The last good thing to come out of the series before the dire ending that was Bloody Roar 4, Primal Fury isn’t quite a sequel, nor is it just a revision. Rather, it’s somewhere in between, featuring new characters (and new designs for the old cast), new stages, and new mechanics while using BR3 as a base. It’s often considered by series fans to be the best of the series, and there’s plenty of reason to see why. It’s not that it’s drastically different from what the series already established, but adds a layer of polish that helps edge this title out.

Dr. Lunatic: Supreme With Cheese

Check out out Top 47,585 Games of All Time episode discussing Dr. Lunatic Supreme with Cheese! Supreme With Cheese is more or less the ultimate culmination of a series that spawned from a Usenet joke about Doom back in 1993. It’s basically a love letter to the small but dedicated fanbase of the previous version, Dr. Lunatic, and comes with every level, official or fan-made, made for it. That comes to about over a thousand levels, spread across over eighty ‘worlds’. While the quality between individual sets of levels can vary sharply, it still makes for a truly massive amount of content. How much of that you’ll see, however, depends on how much you enjoy its general style of play.
