I tweeted this a couple days ago but the sentiment remains.
That morning, I didn’t feel like having my usual eggs, or toast or any of the foods that are typically considered breakfast foods. I opened the fridge and saw the left over tacos we had the day before and I knew that was exactly what I wanted.
Life is so freeing when you actively decide to listen to your body instead of the food rules that diet culture instilled in us.
Fun fact: did you know that the reason we say breakfast is the most important meal of the day is because of James Caleb Jackson and John Harvey Kellogg?
What a great way to sell this new product they invented: breakfast cereal!
Many of the food rules we abide by are marketing tactics or messages from diet culture to keep us checking our weight and eating the “right foods”.
When I think of a food rule and feel pressured to follow it, I ask myself:
- where does this rule come from?
- is it serving me or is it serving a company or an industry?
- why should I trust this rule over what my body tells me?
- does following this rule make me happy?
Based on those answers, I decide whether I want to implement it or not.
Eating breakfast makes me feel better most days so I eat breakfast most days.
Eating past 7pm doesn’t always make me feel good but going to bed hungry doesn’t feel good either. I finish work at 8pm so I often eat something before bed. The size depends on how hungry I am / how I think it will affect my sleep.
My body and my knowledge of past food experiences know better than any food rule - and so does yours!
