💀 Why did the Native Americain people hang animal skulls in front of their house?💀

As there are a multitude of indigenous nations in America, I cannot claim that it is a belief for all of these peoples, but at least I can speak for the Ilnu of North-East America.

So I'm calling on the Native Americans on Tumblr to come and write if this is a belief their people believe in too.

My uncle lives on the edge of the forest and is a craftsman. As far back as I can remember he has hung animal skulls on a pole outside right in front of his house. It was sometimes the skulls of cows, mooses, birds, foxes. I once saw a bear skull hanging there.

As several other natives were doing the same thing in front of their house, I asked him why they were hanging them up.

He said it is for the sake of their spirit: If on your way you come across an animal's skull, Maybe he's lost or still scared of the predator that took his life. Whatever the reason, he needs a safe place to calm down before he leaves. To help him, bring the skull home and hang it outside in front of your house. It will be hung like a flag to find its way back, a mark to signify that this house is safe for him. When the skull finally falls off the pole on its own, know that its spirit has left in peace.

Since hanging a skull meant it was a safe shelter, it also meant travelers could come inside the house to warm up and share a meal.
