Self Para: Choosing Ceremony
“Matt Donovan.” Matt bent his head and tried to walk to the centre of the circle without hesitating. Most of the sixteen year olds before him had been looking for their parents, for a last nod, for a smile. Matt knew that in his case there was no parent to look for. None of them were here, none of them had ever been there, none of them cared about the choice Matt would make, none of them cared if Matt would stay or would leave, none of them had asked about his test results. They were simply not interested.
He stood still, his eyes staring at the bowls in front of him. He stared at the bowl with the earth. His test had been clear. Matt belonged in Amity, the faction of peace, the faction of forgiveness, the faction of friendship. Amity had everything Matt had been hoping for, had been wishing for. He knew that maybe he would be happy there, less lonely. He knew that transferring was the only way to forget about everything, to start new.
The only thing that held him back from doing what he had to do was his heart. He stared at Elena Gilbert, standing behind one of the chairs of Abnegation. He had known that she would pick her own faction, that she would stay. Elena belonged in Abnegation like he belonged in Amity. But a part of him was hoping that he and Elena belonged together, that she would miss him as much as he missed her, that she would wanted to make up with him, that after everything would have calmed down she would pick him again.
He shook his head. He couldn’t let his entire future depend on something unsure as hope. What he and Elena had, had been a beautiful thing, but it didn’t exist anymore and probably it would never exist again. He couldn’t let his choice depend on her, couldn’t put that much pressure on her shoulders, that could barely stand more than they were dealing with already.
For the first time in his life, Matt would have to choose for himself, for what would make him happy, for what would be the best for him. He felt how someone pressed the cold knife into his hands and while biting his lip, he made a deep cut in his palm. With a smile on his face he saw how his blood dropped on the earth, on his happiness.
When he walked towards his new faction he sighed relieved. For the first time in his entire life he had chosen for himself and although he felt sad about leaving Elena behind, he was happy, more than happy.
Hey! I'm sorry. I didn't see you.
Can I help you?
May I please have some prompts for Matt?
Of course you can!!
You could write about Matt’s struggle growing up alone. The things he had to do just to survive, and how it felt to have an absent mother at the same time as losing his sister.
Matt and his passion for football. How it’s more than just an extra curricular activity for him, how he uses it to let go of difficult emotion.
Matt’s experience at N.T Prior High school, how he feels about spending time with the other factions. The emotions that are brought up for him when he sees people he knew from Abnegation (e.g. the Gilberts).
Maybe just write about Amity life in general for Matt. The jobs he does and what his living situation is like, who his friends are and what he likes to do for fun?
