Thinking about this kernel about James from Nothing But Shadows.

Thorns (negative connotation) aka Grace Blackthorn; he’s the boy that fell in love with the girl locked in a manor covered in thorns.

Flowers (positive connotation) aka Daisy.

All this says to me is that history remembers James as being associated with both Grace and Cordelia i.e. in the public sense. Whether or not this refers to the “fake” marriage or him and Cordelia actually being in love, I have no idea.
