Both and Newyear are getting married!
okay, we need to have a frank conversation BL fandom. both and newyear just broke off their engagement, and i'm already seeing accusations of fanservice. which is so insane idek where to start.
if it seems like there are a lot of queer couples in the BL industry that's not bc of FS, that's bc there are. things don't work in thailand the way they do in america (or other western countries), so let's start there. but also, it's an industry used entirely to produce gay media. it's also full of hot, young, gay people. of course, they're going to start pairing off. no one is out here saying, "oh wow, het celebrities in america are only dating for the benefit of fans". that would be such an out of pocket thing to say.
now, obviously, some couples like mewgulf were 100% fanservice. however, a lot of actors have spoken about the fact that that kind of FS is no longer a part of the job. and when some of you start accusing real couples of being nothing but FS, it's evident you're only in this space for the fantasy of it and not to support actual queer artists - who are human btw and will break up sometimes
I hope ThamePo holds a mirror so close up to toxic fan culture and shows stans that they basically have no say in what idols/actors/etc do, and gives those fans a big old middle finger with the happy ending of the series by showing them that Pepper and Thame both deserve love, regardless of the gender of the person they love because it’s their own private business who they date.
Post airing of the show, I hope bunch of GMMTV actors, actresses & idols start openly dating/showing their relationships outside of their branded pairing, and living their damn lives without having to worry about losing their jobs and fans because people have been told in big ass red letters via ThamePo that just people you want these people to be one thing, in reality, they’re completely different and most importantly, they are allowed to be.
Neo literally refused branded QL pairings with Louis and Mark because he wanted to be open about his relationship with Mint, and he knew that fans would riot is he admitted he was a straight guy and wasn’t in an actual relationship with his branded partner. It’s been shown that fans can be sane about artists dating.
Neo and Mint were so supported, and it was beautiful.
Tul and Mew were so supported, and it was beautiful.
Syliv and Mint were so supported, and it was beautiful.
So in a post ThamePo world, I hope that if a GMMTV artist (or any artist regardless of the company) wants to talk about who they’re dating, within or outside of their company/branded pairing, I hope they feel a tad safer to do so.
But on the flip side, fans also need to keep in mind that they have no right to get mad if a couple doesn’t work out. It’s not your relationship, your feelings have nothing to do with it. Like what’s happening currently with NewYear and Both, yes, they broke up, yes, one of them is seeing a new person. No, that is none of your business! You don’t get to bash this person online, doesn’t matter if someone cheated or fell out of love or whatever, you weren’t part of the relationship, so stop acting weird and creepy about it. You weren’t the one that was cheated on, Susan! Get a freaking hobby. /r
both and newyear broke up. newyear has a new boyfriend and alledgedly were having dinner with said boyfriend when annoucing the news.
fans were having a melt down. a hardcore long time fan i followed posting a new facebook status every 5 minutes. even vietnamese netizens were shocked...i need to lie down
Ugly crying happy tears 😭 So very happy for them ♥️
Newyear published in x something where among other things he says in a few words stop hate
Sorry for saying this but I think that human beings are curious, nosy, we love gossip, giving our opinion about others and if you expose your private life on social networks and you have fans who follow your work and private life, it is to be expected that certain people will react or have something to comment because you exposed that private life to the fans.
If you don't want people to comment, criticize or be curious to know more, then don't expose your private life
But this does not mean I agree with hatred or bullying towards artists.
I know some artists who really know how to keep their private lives prívate... away from fans, media and social networks. And if something happens in their private life, their fans never find out and therefore they do not question, criticize, etc.
Also, in my (unsolicited) opinion, I think that Newyear did not know how to handle the situation well.
Make a Valentine's Day post and the next day make a post about the end of his relationship... I guess he didn't think that fans would start speculating what happened and discover hid supposed new boyfriend.
And in his last post he tells fans to stop destroying the relationship between him and Both as brothers and friends.
How are the fans going to destroy the relationship between them?
And the use of emojis and the hashtag bothnewyear in his post is not helping him much, there are people commenting that he does not take it seriously
I think it's a really hard thing, and I’m glad I’m not in their shoes.
You have these young men, in this case, gay young men, who for the first time ever are getting fans not only for their work but also simply for being with their boyfriends as a gay couple. There are so many now who publicise and show their relationships on YouTube and make money off it.
That in itself is not a bad thing since they are adults, and I also think it helps to make being queer more normal. If there is more content and more people see it and realise nothing is different in queer relationships, that we’re all just people.
However, with social media, the engagement of the fans doesn't stop in the comments underneath the videos but continues with wanting them to play all the platforms and give them more glimpses into their lives. And in return, they get more fame and money.
And that goes for all actors in the BL world, no matter if they are gay or not. The only difference is: if they are gay, they can market their relationship; if they are with a woman, they’d better hide her because they’ll only get hate right from the start.
Recently, Copter, who came out as non-binary a couple of years ago, revealed that he's dating a woman and has now been called a liar and is accused of queerbaiting. Apparently, people really have no idea what non-binary means.
Mew and Tul are still getting hate and are accused of faking their relationship and cheating on their former ship partners, who have both said they are straight, by the way.
Japanese reality couple Dai and Shun have basically made a whole business out of their relationship and travel from fan meet to fan meet.
And then there are people in the BL/gay Asian world whose dating lives we don't know about. And then sometimes they slip up, or they are "caught" by fans who have their cameras and put everything on social media immediately to get a piece of fame for being the one who "caught" them. It happened to Ohm Pawat when he was walking hand in hand with his girlfriend. It happened to Mile when he posted a picture that mirrored the one his girlfriend put on social media. It happened to Freen and Seng when a creepy fan filmed and photographed into their apartment from the other side of the street.
And then fans turn against them for "lying" about being single/talented or claim they are "cheating" on their ship partner.
And we honestly don't know the price for example Apo pays for keeping his private life so secret. Do we know if relationships went sour because of it? How much work it is to hide who he is dating or hooking up with? How stressful it all is? We don't.
My personal opinion is that as soon as you become somewhat famous these days and gain fans, you simply can't win anymore because you get just as many haters with every fan. Whether or not you put something on social media, whichever way you put it, or if you hide it—as soon as something leaks, whether it's a breakup, an engagement, or the announcement of a relationship, the reaction is always extreme.
And yes, people are curious, but for me, there is a difference between seeing an actor in a mall and saying hi quickly or asking for a picture politely versus chasing them through the mall filming them. Or reading about a breakup and posting "good luck to both of you" or "sorry you broke up" versus posting one hateful comment after the next, accusing one or both of them of things you do not know because you weren’t there, and just being an awful person online because you feel entitled to be that for whatever reason. So no, I don't think anyone deserves that or that fans have a right to be hateful and awful people. No one does.
