part 2 of the hidden chapters in ob paperback:
2. Natasia and Sel
3. Bree and Nick
Legendborn x Avatar AU 💙💙
Bree and Nick if they were in the Na'vi!
The amazing artist is @sullyfortress 💖💖
Characters belong to Tracy Deonn and are from The Legendborn Cycle Series
I just know Selwyns heart sank when Nick returned to the order for (what he thought was) some random girl. Matching necklaces n all that shit must've hurt.
my favorite part of legendborn is genuinely how unhinged all the characters were
Ummmmm why did no one tell me the epicness that is Tracy Deonn’s Legendborn cycle series?
Just finished book 1 and honestly? Amazing. Loved everything about it. Could not put it down. Started it at 9 am sat morning and finished 3am Sunday. I was supposed to buddy read this with my homegirl. She started it before me cuz she knows I read at the speed of light and I still finished before her 😆.
I loved the themes of loss, the glaring instances of institutional racism, and resilience in the face of grief and adversity. Briana Matthew’s is just a 16 year old and she didn’t feel like it. I’ve read so many fmcs that were so messy in their journeys. Bree had a bit of info to learn but she didn’t make me wanna throw that book across the room when she was a tad reckless. I loved that she was level headed ( thank goodness) for a teenager and I certainly loved her journey through this first part of her story.
Anyway… I had to stop myself from starting up Bloodmarked as soon as I finished book 1. I need sleep! 😴
On to book 2!
I love Sel, I really fucking do but you know how sometimes the stans are so annoying it stars to.... yeah.
Sel gets called out and rightfully so because he did torment Bree the whole of first book, tried to kill her and what not but some cariad crusaders simply cannot fathom the fact that he can be wrong. Sure, he's allowed to grow but that does not excuse him from all the mistakes he made.
The constant comparison with Nick and always talking about how "bad" BreeNick is simply annoying. Try to focus more on the ship you enjoy by talking ABOUT them instead of constantly comparing it to another. It shows insecurity.
Plus, ship wars in the Legendborn Cycle are useless, mentioned multiple times by Tracy herself.
Somebody wrote an amazing piece on a subset of The Legendborn Cycle "fans"
And I think y'all should read it!
Some of y'all need to read this and then read it again. At it's core, The Legendborn Cycle is a fantasy about a young black girl in the South coming of age and dealing with grief and often, misogynoir.
Tracy Deonn’s The Legendborn Cycle is a rich, complex series that weaves Arthurian legend, Southern Black history, and contemporary fantasy
It has a beautiful romantic subplot but it's not a romance and it certainly is never marketed as a just a romance story between Sel and Bree despite some people's need to read it that way.
Both deuteragonists are fully fleshed out characters but their love stories with Bree still serve as an engine for part of her character development and growth. They are not the main protagonist, Bree is and reading through just a shipping lens means you are missing a large chunk of her journey!
These books are extremely layered and meant to be reread. There's so much symbolism and metaphor and power in these words but not if you are reading it just for the resolution of the "love entanglement" as Tracy now calls it.
Tracy has said several times that both boys are team Bree. She points out the futility of the ship wars because of the "eternality" (her words not mine) of the characters' bonds and relationships. She speaks more than a few times (on video!) about the idea of "endgame" as most readers understand it being boring and not something she's interested in.
And she loves all three of these characters with all of her heart! It's ok to have a preference but the way some of y'all are reading it, you may want to look for a different series because she has never had the intention of serving you the basic YA love story you thought you were reading and has said that several times. Every subplot every motif has been woven into the story multiple times. She's had character arcs and magic systems planned out before writing the first book. (Side note: seriously if y'all want me to post some of the podcast interviews where she talks about craft and intent behind some of her decisions, let me know because they are amazing and enlightening!)
The romantic subplot is the side dish not the main, please don't forget that! Especially those of y'all intent on correcting people but not understanding the material!
