❤️ Who is the one person they’d drop everything for, no questions asked?

Andreth has always been kind and she was raised to be helpful, but she's always going to ask questions. It's not even nosiness (though she's a curious person at heart), but rather common sense. Don't get involved in stuff if you don't have all the information, that's how you ruin your life.

Bregor is the exception to the rule though. They're very close in age (he was born in 359 and Andreth in 261, and I headcanon him to have been born later in the year and her soon after the new year, so they're less than two years apart), and they both had a lot of pressure and responsibility put on them at a very young age.

So they made a pact of sorts. If one of them needed something, be it help getting out of a conversation or someone to tag in on something important, they're there for each other no questions asked. And sure, it gets annoying sometimes, but it's also reassuring to have someone who's going to watch your back.

It does mean that Andreth has to show up to some very awkward meetings (she's her brother's most trusted advisor after all, and that means spending time with her ex who is also her liege lord), but it also means that Bregor will back up whatever nonsense she's saying to try and cope (and in the early days to get a reaction, she was young, we all do that stuff at some point), and any excuse she makes to get out of meetings early (he does lay it on a bit thick sometimes, she's out here saying she has a migraine and Bregor is implying she's been on death's door for the past week and a half. He's a very supportive brother who had to watch his sister suffer in the aftermath of Aegnor's unilateral decision. And they don't even have ice-cream yet)

On a lighter note, there are several burnt pots and broken knifes buried somewhere in the woods in Ladros. Hiding evidence of accidents or dumb experiments is an important part of their sibling pact.

🏠 Describe their home when no one’s watching—messy, spotless, chaotic cozy?

Something that's very important to understand when it comes to Andreth is that she has always been:

a) an argumentative and stubborn ball of chaos

b) smarter than most people in any given room

c) and the sort of person whose brain is going at a million miles an hour and needs to have at least five things to read/work on at any given moment

Which means that by the umpteenth time of her arguing that she doesn't need to make her bed, and she shouldn't have to organize her room since no one is going to be going in there and she already knows where everything is, her parents gave up on trying to control the chaos that is her living space. So long as it wasn't a health hazard (which it never was, she's disorganized but she's clean), it's good enough.

And this translates to her adult life. There is technically a method to the madness but she the only one that knows what that is. There's parchment pieces and scrolls everywhere, a half-finished quilt tossed over the back of a chair, she's got an abandoned whittling project taking up most of her desk, and there's like five different books sitting on her nightstand and she's started all of them by the looks of it.

I.

The afternoon is ripe in its arrival, dappling the woods with shivering lights of orange and gold. Bregor cuts through the overgrowth with his long knife, and his steps are followed by those of his lively sister.

They walk the usual path around Ladros in silence, Bregor humming to himself as he traces the locations with traps he'd placed to see what they yielded.

"You set these so far within the forest?" Andreth asks, a wicker basket with leaves and roots on her arm.

"I had to, game has been so scarce, and the cold season is upon us soon. We know not the sudden source of this lessening."

"I thought Father had organized longer expeditions for this purpose, in the coming moon?" The thought of this attempt sits ill with her, but then, Andreth has only recently reached adulthood and begun to look into the affairs of the family.

"Aye..." says Bregor, thoughtful as he stops to listen, "But the stores need replenishment and the last hunt was beneath what everyone expected."

A sudden mewl is heard from without, one familiar to both: that of an animal in the throes of pain.

"Oh no..." Andreth murmurs as they follow the direction of one such trap Bregor had set.

When they reach the source of the sound, Andreth gasps.

“Andreth, near it not!” cries Bregor, extending an arm whilst reaching for his sword.

"Peace, Bregor," she raises a hand, placing her basket down. She is unable to look away from the sight: a dire wolf, its hind leg bloodied and gnawed by the crude metal contraption. And the pain in its howling breaks her heart.

Its fur is thick and shining silver, its eyes a stunning shade Andreth had never seen before: then again, she'd never seen a wolf at all, not this close.

"One of our rogue hunters?" Bregor slowly and carefully drops to one knee.

Andreth groans. “Bregor don't be ridiculous. Even so, it’s hurt! We... I cannot just leave it here... and these are our traps.”

The wolf falls silent, its fur matted with blood where its hind leg is caught in the trap, wide eyes glistening wetly as it watches them. It seems to Andreth the animal has a near human gaze. Pity wells in her heart, urging her to speak, to act.

Willowy as she is, she nears the dire wolf with care. “I will not hurt you... we are here to help.”

Agitation stirs within the beast, strong teeth and jaws snapping once in the air before its head falls aside, and another cry of pain softens even Bregor’s expression. “Let me, sister.”

Andreth does, glad for her brother—Bregor has more experience with the wilds and its inhabitants, and she is wise enough to see when she needs aid.

The animal is faint, and with care her brother succeeds in dismantling the trap, while Andreth fashions a carrier of sorts from Bregor's cloak. She's recently learned how to tie the knots properly, and already the skill is of use.

"How strange, going out to check for predators, but then returning home with one."

"I can treat wounds, but not here," Andreth grunts as each holds a side of the makeshift stretcher. Her brother may be stubborn, but so is she. Luckily, they're often of like mind, by the end. "I need my supplies."

Bregor sighs. "Your heart is kind, Andreth. I only hope it never leads you astray."

Andreth rolls her eyes, advancing with renewed vigor.

As the pair walk the return path towards the settlement, none notice the many pairs of curious eyes following their trek from the shadows.

I’m still amazed when I look at the family tree of the House of Bëor and remember Bregor is Andreth’s brother. They are power siblings! Bregor’s bow is among the four notable heirlooms passed down to Elros, so I think Bregor must be a remarkably skilled archer. It’s interesting how Bregor became the lord of his people at the ripe old age of 73 and ruled for a brief but peaceful time. It makes me think about how historians tend to record more dramatic and eventful stories. It’s bittersweet to think about how Andreth probably watched all five of her brother’s children grow up and educated them in lore but never had the chance to build a family herself. I think being around her family probably makes her feel more strongly about the contrast between human and elven ways of life, and how she desires time with griefs of changes rather than memory unchanged. We know Beril their younger sister only by name. Her name gives me a feeling that she is a gardener and healer and somewhat like Rían in personality. I definitely need to think more about the relationship between these three!

          Boromir was the elder son of Boron, and the fourth head of the House of Bëor. His family had long been in service to the House of Finarfin and loyal to Finrod Felagund, and near the end of his father’s rule Boromir fought alongside Finrod’s brothers Angrod and Aegnor, as well as the Fëanorions Maedhros and Maglor, in the Battle of Aglon Pass. As a reward for his people’s bravery, the sons of Finarfin granted the land of Ladros to the House of Bëor, and shortly after he inherited the leadership of his people Boromir was named the first Lord of Ladros.          The wife of Boromir was Pelinel, a soft-spoken woman who bore him three children. In her youth she had been friends with Boromir’s cousin Bereg, and through him met her husband. Pelinel was sorrowful when Bereg was stirred to wrath against the elves, and even before he departed Beleriand their friendship had grown cold, for she admired the elven-lords and influenced Boromir to advocate to his father to place his trust in them.          Bregor was the eldest child and only son of Boromir and Pelinel. He was close to his youngest sister Beril, who was his close counselor throughout his life. Their middle sister, Andreth, was independent and stubborn, preferring her own company to that of her siblings. In her youth she was sent to the house of her kinsman Belemir, where she learned the art of healing and many lessons of lore from Belemir’s wife, Adanel of the House of Marach.           One day while walking along the shore of Aeluin, Andreth chanced to meet Aegnor, her father’s liege-lord. They first beheld one another in the reflection of the clear blue lake, and Andreth was taken with his beauty, and he with hers. Over the course of two years, they grew close to one another and fell desperately in love.          Andreth begged Aegnor to marry her, for she knew her mortal lifespan would allow them only a short time to be together, but at the advice of his elder brother Finrod, Aegnor recalled the law of the Eldar that no marriage could happen during a time of war. In sorrow, he parted from her, though his love for her remained and he would take no other bride for the sake of her memory, nor would she wed any Man among her people.           In the wake of her heartbreak, Andreth turned again to the legends of Men taught to her by Adanel, growing great in knowledge and understanding of their lore. As she grew older, she was respected as a wise-woman among all the Houses of the Edain, earning the name Saelind, “wise-heart.” Despite his role in turning Aegnor from her, Andreth befriended Finrod Felagund as had her ancestor Bëor, and they often discoursed together on matters of elves and Men. She faithfully recorded their conversations, though the only one to survive through the Ages was the document later known as Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth, a heated debate on the nature of Mannish fëar and the fate of relations between the two kindreds.

The History of Middle-earth \ House of Bëor Part II

In the reign of Boromir as Lord of the House of Bëor, great grandson of Bëor, the Bëorians were granted Ladros in Dorthonion (ruled by Finrod’s brothers Angrod and Aegnor) as a feifdom of their own by the House of Finarfin which they inhabited until the Dagor Bragollach in 455 when Dorthonion and Ladros included were swept away by Morgoth’s offensive and Boromir’s grandson Bregolas, the third Lord of Ladros was slain, leaving the leadership of the ruined house to his brother Barahir.
