Love the idea of Glaurung being able to mimic voices to cause further confusion and distress. We already know he can make convincing illusions and plant false memories. Perhaps he can answer back in the voice of any he has heard or even any he finds in the minds of his victims

In the beginning, before he came to his full power, it was the faintest of suggestions. Fingon before managing to drive Glaurung off, beginning to hear whispers from the soldiers around them, except none had uttered a word.

Emeldir during the Bragollach losing precious time reaching Morwen, Rían and the other vulnerable Bëorians because of a cascade of frenzied voices projected over the burning lands.

Orodreth’s troops becoming frenzied during the Battle of Nargothrond, the forested hills becoming a maze of sorts

Strange voices in the mist covered lands around Nargothrond following the fall. Níniel hearing the echoes in her dreams.

The Wild Thyme Unseen

A ficlet for @tolkiengenweek, Day 1

If any had asked of him, in that other life ere the Burning, which were those things that formed his life, the answer would have been quick and certain: his father’s guidance or his mother’s wisdom, his sister’s wry warmth, the solemnity of the gathered elders.

And it was true, of course. These had been his mainstays for as long as he could recall and there was no balm for the ache of their absence.

But as Beren lay hidden within the gorse, looking out over Ladros that was, he found his ears strained rather for the sound of Emeldir’s hammer, undoing as it had each spring the winter’s toll on the Hall, or for his father’s quiet humming as he pruned the garden herbs, rubbed down the newborn lambs with straw.

Sleepless on the scorched heath, it was Andreth’s voice that he sought, weathered as those fingers which in childhood had traced slow patterns along his hands, both soothing him into slumber.

Hiril’s shriek of laughter called to him from the icy springs when he drank. The little river beside the fell had held a similar chill and he would haul her after him whenever they fought, where any squabble would eventually wind its way to laughter within its waters.

Where was the bellow of his uncle’s voice? The bickering of his cousins?

No hammer could undo this toll, nor any song coax the thyme and hyssop from the soil or draw the bleating lambs back from the ashes. The chatter of the stream was choked, the water fouled as all the valley below him. His uncle was dead and burned. The cairn above his cousins’ broken bodies was raised by his own hands.

Bitter was this learning and bitter still the admission: it had been the unnoticed things his heart could not do without, the lost mundane that tangled grief within his breast.

The recent AU installments got me back into the Beren-Luthien-Finrod mood, which led to these portrait attempts! For starters, we have Barahir, Emeldir the Blind, and Beren, once again inspired by the Pacific Northwest tribes. For Barahir in particular, I based him off of Michael Greyeyes in the movie, Woman Walks Ahead, hence why his hair is down for now XD

The other three are Luthien, Melian, and Thingol! For Melian, her hairstyle and clothes are inspired by the Qing Dynasty since she was born during that time. I'm not quite satisfied with Thingol's look, but I'm at least glad I knew of his mustachio from the Pharmakos fic lololl

Ok nobody asked for this but I REALLY REALLY REALLY!!!!!! Hate the version where she comes back to life. First of all people read it and use it to shit on Indis like OH MIRIEL WOULD’VE ONE DAY REGRETTED DYING 🥺🥺 as if she was too stupid and incapable of realizing this and weighing the choices of her decisions when she made the decision to stay dead. And how is that Indis’ fault anyway. Second of all no fucking way she killed herself before really raising her son (or she raised him then died anyway but it doesn’t matter) and made him totally fucked up partly because of it BUT THEN. HAVING THE AUDACITY TO LEAVE HER SON AGAIN BY RETURNING TO LIFE???? WHILE FEANOR IS FAMOUSLY BANISHED FROM THE LIVING FOREVER????? Yes technically it isn’t her fault but what a shitty fucking story!! God!!!! The barest silver lining for feanor not being able to return to the living was that he can hang out wigh mom like he never got to but now this is torn away from him AGAIN. YOU JUST RETRAUMATIZED YOUR SON??? FOR NO DAMN REASON??? Way to make Miriel a completely inconsiderate mother!! Good lord!!

I’ve been thinking about Morwen’s line to Túrin “if you wail, other things will find you first”, said to him when he starts to cry in their conversation before his departure to Doriath

It’s harsh certainly and it’s undeniably true.

I think Morwen heard this herself, as a child fleeing the Bragollach with other Bëorian children. Perhaps she even witnessed this come true, the cries of her younger kin attracting the attention of enemies or even simply of wild animals.

Morwen at her age, eleven or twelve, might have been among the older children and more capable than some of the elderly, many of whom I believe died on the road to Brethil.

Of the burdens that might have been placed upon this newly orphaned, possibly injured child; to gather materials and other chores she would have been used to, but also to keep watch, to keep children quiet, to dig their graves… all without tears.

I have been thinking a lot lately too about how a lot of her later approach to things could have been influenced by Emeldir…very interested in them having an incredibly complicated, almost contentious relationship; a mutually respectful one, for the most part and she’s learned so much from her. But Emeldir absolutely knows that she’s causing a lot of damage to young Morwen and she also knows that she doesn’t really have a choice because the alternative is worse.

I think about the resilience that Morwen instills in and demands from Túrin and Niënor and about her knowledge that children can and do survive horrific circumstances is entwined her knowledge that often they don’t.

Anyways I love Morwen very much
