Let me paint a scene for y'all. It's July, in North Carolina and it's 7am. You're outside, in the garden, putting in work, because you know, once that midmorning heat hits, everything changes. Let's be honest, it should not have taken 233 years to get here, because Black women have been beacons of justice since--forever. That fact aside, this candle seeks to highlight the legacy of Black women's contributions to fighting for justice, strives to mark this momentous present moment, and attempts to light a hopeful flame towards the future. And everything about this candle is symbolic. First up, the scent design. This candle is a refreshing blend of juniper, orange blossom, and bay leaves. Juniper to symbolize strength even in the midst of harsh conditions orange blossom is the state flower of Florida where Judge Jackson was raised and bay leaves to symbolize victory and wisdom. Together, these scent notes make a vibrant, textured, powerful blend. A hopeful, crisp, cleansing combination that lifts the spirits ... and also reminds us that there is still so much more work to do. Cast against a deep blue background (symbolic of justice and wisdom), a reimagined lady justice is crushing the snake of evil with her left foot and is holding the scales of the court's impartiality in her left hand. She holds a sword in her right hand, as a symbol of justice and is blindfolded to symbolize fairness. There is gold throughout to symbolize the magic that is Black women. #REPOST @brightblackcandle with @get__repost__app Black August is here y'all! Throughout the month, we'll be posting all about Black August. What it is. How it emerged. How we honor it. Today is a 101, but we'll be doing some deep dives throughout the month. We hope y'all enjoy the series!!!!! I first learned about Black August when I moved to Durham. Each summer, (pre-Covid!!!!!) there's a festival called "Black August in the Park," where folks connect, eat, dance, share, and laugh. It's the epitome of Black joy, and caused me to dig into it more. I learned that Black August is a time to pay tribute to Black revolutionaries, resistance, freedom fighters, and political prisoners. It's a time to raise awareness about how Black folks have, and continue to, fight against oppression. And it's a time to forefront the importance of self-care as we continue the battles our ancestors began generations ago. Black August was initiated in 1979 by the Black Guerilla Family, when a group of incarcerated individuals in San Quentin, decided to honor the assassination of Black Panther brothers Jonathan and George Jackson (a LOT more on them this month!). They were murdered in August, a number of revolutionaries -- like Marcus Garvey and Fred Hampton -- were born in August. And a number of acts of resistance like the Haitian Revolution, the Nat Turner Rebellion, and the Watts and Ferguson uprisings were all in August. Many folks who commemorate Black August delve deep into learnings about Black liberation, and some folks also fast. Personally, I weave in radical meditation practices, and also try to set intentions based in hope, rather than fear. Reposted from @brightblackcandle When I was growing up, Memorial Day was a day to remember lost loved ones. I didn't learn about the connection to the military until way later in life! On today, I'm remembering all of those who are no longer with us, but especially my cousin Chris. I thought this was the perfect day to officially debut his tribute candle KOI.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ KOI is our 2nd Limited Edition Summer Scent, with 50% of sales going to 100 Males to College, a program working with Black and Latino males to encourage college readiness and retention.
