Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books because it’s not like some of the modern romance stories I see too often.

Girl hates boy

Boy likes girl

Boy persues girl relentlessly despite her obvious dislike

Girl caves and falls for boy (usually there’s an unwilling but amazing kiss somewhere in there that helps her along...)

Mr. Darcy was an amazing love interest. He fell for Elizabeth gradually, not all at once or for no reason. He confessed to her, and when she rejected him, although he admittedly was a douche at first, he realized how douchey he was acting and backed off completely. He explained (in a letter) the miscommunications that had caused her hate for him, but didn’t force her to believe them. He just laid out the truth. Later when they met again, he was perfectly civil and polite, and although he still admired her, did not repeat his confession because he knew he had been rejected. He handled it with grace, and it didn’t make him hate Elizabeth or blame her. He did everything possible to help her and her family but not because he had anything to gain or because he wanted her to owe him. He did it because he loved her, and wanted to help her in any way, even though she had turned him down.

Elizabeth was an awesome main character. She had flaws, but it didn’t stop me from loving her character’s humor and intelligence. She hated Mr. Darcy, and when he confessed, she was shocked and almost angry because of what she thought he’d done. She rejected him, but once she read his letter she completely changed her line of thinking regarding him. HOWEVER, she didn’t immediately do a 180 and start loving him. (That’s a trope I hate the most. Once the misunderstandings are cleared, the heroine immediately falls for the love interest) She takes a long time to go from being indifferent to him, to admiring him, to loving him. And all her feelings change for good reasons. He helped her family and herself. He was a perfect gentleman despite her rejection, and respected her feelings.

We need more books like Pride and Prejudice.

When I was little I remember at each Christmas at my grandparents we would have a huge feast with all the family. My most prized food would have been the Sara Lee French Cheesecake. Man it was so good! I used to try and get there first and get the biggest slice.
