In this dry garden the Triteleia ixioides 'Starlight' (triplet lily) is flowering between the evergreen orange-bronze leaves of Libertia peregrinans 'Gold Leaf' (wandering Chilean iris). The flowers of this cultivar of the cormous perennial Triteleia are cream with a pale purple stripe down the centre of each petal.

Ideal for growing in a border or a container is the herbaceous perennial Geranium maculatum 'Espresso' (spotted cranesbill) which has distinctive bronze-coloured foliage. At this time of year the pale purplish-pink flowers contrast with the leaves.

The bronze-coloured foliage of Geranium maculatum 'Espresso' (spotted cranesbill, hardy geranium) contrasts with pale purplish-pink flowers produced in late spring to summer. This plant is useful for borders or containers and it will thrive in sun or a semi shaded location provided the soil does not dry out during the summer months.

In the woodland garden at the Beth Chatto Garden, Essex, there was a powerful plant association of the emerging purple foliage of Polygonatum x hybridum 'Betberg' (Solomon's seal, David's harp) and the bronze of leaves of Rodgersia podophylla (Rodgers' bronze-leaf). The Polygonatum was given to Beth Chatto by Isbert Preussler and was collected by him and named after a small village in the Black Forest, near Laufen, Sulzburg. The emerging stems and young leaves are a purple-brown, slowly fading to green as the leaves mature. The plant is a hybrid of Polygonatum multiflorum (common Solomon's seal) and Polygonatum odoratum (angular Solomon's seal).
