My Journey w/ Tech

As my first real internship in the tech sector comes to a close, I can honestly say that I leave feeling very confident in my abilities to land a career in the technology field and dare I say it...open my own startup! I have learned quite a lot in terms of what it takes to run a business and handle your own responsibilities at the same time. This especially holds true for a startup where everyone pretty much doesn't have a job title that is set in stone as everyone helps out each other due to the small form factor. From dealing directly with the customers and technical support to graphic design, to quality assurance to even suggesting new features; I had a chance to try it all. This was a truly worthwhile and fulfilling experience and I am glad I was afforded the opportunity to be a part of such an amazing and supportive group of individuals, each of us striving towards our goals.

The clustering of companies in the Brooklyn Tech Triangle has created a momentous demand for neighborhood amenities – like the opportunity to create a 21-acre park stretching from Downtown to the waterfront, increased bus service to serve local residents and workers, or more parochial demos of local products. For instance, as a clean tech innovation demo, local startup BioLite worked with the DUMBO Improvement District to launch DUMBO Firepit, a contained outdoor fireplace that doubles as a phone charging station and lighting source for the neighborhood’s Christmas tree.

The inaugural NYC Web Development Fellowship is now underway in the heart of the Brooklyn Tech Triangle, with 28 people – 16 of them Brooklyn residents – getting a fully-funded education to start a career in web development. The NYC Department of Small Businesses Services launched the program last month in an effort to provide top-of-the-line technology skills to the people of New York. The 22-week training program on web and iOS development is provided by experts from The Flatiron School.

Requests from companies looking for office space in Downtown Brooklyn have soared since the unveiling of the Brooklyn Tech Triangle Strategic Plan in June. But for those who still may not be aware of all that our neighborhood has to offer, the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership (DBP) presents “We’ll Take Brooklyn,” a short film that they commissioned from the Irondale Ensemble Project (just one of the nearly 50 world-class cultural groups in Downtown Brooklyn).

DBP asked Irondale (and their stellar video production team, The Press and the Public Project) to put together a film that touts the area’s transit access, amenities, and tax benefits for companies that locate themselves in Downtown Brooklyn. The result? In a word, fabulous.
