Summary
Despite being attacked by the Port Mafia's militant "Black Lizard," the Armed Detective Agency easily repelled them. Just as Kunikida had feared, the employees were busy cleaning up the mess in the office. Meanwhile, Atsushi was ordered to accompany Ranpo to a crime scene. However, he was a little suspicious of the "great detective" who was so out of touch with the world that he didn't even know how to ride a train. Waiting for them at the crime scene were Detective Minoura and the body of a woman who was believed to be his subordinate. Ranpo boasted that he could solve it in under a minute, but…
"You're the culprit!" he declared, pointing to none other than Officer Sugimoto, who was standing right beside him. Contrary to Detective Minoura's astonished disbelief, Sugimoto was gradually cornered. He eventually pointed his gun at Ranpo and the others, but was apprehended by Atsushi. Then, the tragedy of the lovers is revealed. Atsushi is impressed by Ranpo's "super-deduction," which has revealed everything. However, Dazai confesses that at the moment Ranpo solved the case, he had secretly pinched his hair. That's right, his deduction wasn't due to any supernatural ability.

The direction of "Super Deduction" was intended to subtly show the "difference" between what appears to be supernatural ability and what isn't.
It's the opposite of the superpowered characters whose white writing glows on black manuscript paper.
If you look closely, you'll see that mathematical formulas are embedded in his glasses. That was the idea of the cinematographer, Kambayashi-kun. Besides, only Ranpo thinks there's wind swirling around there (laughs). Think of it as a dramatic pose before the hero appears.
However, the glasses he wears at that moment have a special meaning. As will be revealed later, the detective agency was founded by Fukuzawa Yukichi solely to create a "place" for Edogawa Ranpo.
Those glasses were a gift from Fukuzawa Yukichi. But Ranpo isn't stupid, so he probably knows he can deduce things even without the glasses. I think of them as a symbol of the "lie" necessary to establish the mutual trust between Fukuzawa and Ranpo…
When I encounter people who create things far beyond my own imagination, I feel like it's almost like they have some kind of supernatural ability (laughs). It's a stylish subtitle that tickles the fancy of fans.
I think Akio Jissōji's "The Murder Case on D Hill" is a masterpiece among his later works... but that's beside the point.
Ranpo's obsession with the marbles in ramune soda reminds me of Teppei Arashi, perhaps because of the voice actor connection... but that's also beside the point. Sorry about that (lol). The original setting that Ranpo's "super-deduction" isn't a supernatural ability is really interesting.
Therefore, I understand that the character introduction captions use "ability name" instead of "supernatural ability name" almost entirely because of this setting and device by Ranpo (lol).
In the case of dialogue, characters often say the wrong things, but you can't put lies in the captions.
A series of disappearances of tourists visiting Yokohama occurs, and the Armed Detective Agency receives a tip revealing the victims' whereabouts. Kunikida has Taguchi Rokuzō, an illegal hacker, investigate the source, but all that is found are photographs of the victims and the mysterious phrase "Azure Messenger" Uncertainly, they call a taxi driven by a driver and informant who claims to have seen two of the eleven victims, and Atsushi and his companions head to their destination.
While Dazai and Kunikida engage in their usual fruitless exchange, they arrive at a suspicious abandoned hospital. Imprisoned there is a beautiful woman who calls herself Sasaki Nobuko. Just as they are about to count the other men who were also imprisoned, gas is released. The next morning, the newspapers are filled with news of the Detective Agency's unauthorized raid, which resulted in the victims' deaths. It was a trap. Creator Commentary

I wanted to focus on Kunikida's personal side while also showing Atsushi his interactions with Dazai, in order to succinctly represent the nature of the Armed Detective Agency. The fact that the anime could slightly alter the structure and "add a twist" is because there were elements that connected to the original work.
This episode made me appreciate the depth of the original work once again.
Now, they say that people of the opposite sex are more likely to fall in love in dangerous places, and that newborn animals mistake the first thing they see for their parents, but what kind of psychology does Kunikida fall into when he encounters a woman in a special situation? After helping Nobuko, everyone is talking about superficial things.
Dazai, however, is suspicious of her and is investigating her alone. Kunikida, too, is carrying something heavier than Dazai realizes. Everything that seems unrelated at first glance is actually connected behind the scenes and gradually overlaps into one… I hope that feeling is depicted in a satisfying way. This work doesn't feature many adult women, so the atmosphere changes quite a bit with just Nobuko. As the story shifts to her perspective, I consciously tried to keep the pace of episode 6 as fast as possible to create a maturer, roundabout mood.
I like Kunikida, that hopelessly straightforward "idealistic fool" with a screw loose… but that's a story for the next volume.
◎Enokido Yōji (Series composition and script)
Episodes 6 and 7 are a bit of a stretch, as the script for the first five episodes was mostly faithful to the original manga.
Because the timeline was changed from the original novel, Dazai and Kunikida are joined by another character, and the trio solves the case together. Since there wasn't an episode where the main trio worked together as detectives, I decided to boldly rearrange it and insert it here.
I'm grateful to Asagiri-san for his quick response to my hesitant question, "Is it okay to change the timeline of 'Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam' in the anime version and insert it in the middle of the first season?"
He immediately replied, "That's interesting!"
This episode also features Kunikida as the main character, and I thought his tragic love story with the heroine, Sasaki Nobuko, would be quite interesting, but when I actually wrote the script, the presence of young Rokuzō unexpectedly became thematically significant.
Because the Azure King incident left both Rokuzō and Nobuko feeling isolated, they needed a shared visual image. Inspired by the aquarium used when the Nobuko first appeared, I had Rokuzō place a single tropical fish in a large aquarium.
The single tropical fish, floating in the blue water, represents both Rokuzō and Nobuko's loneliness.
Every single person in this screenshot looks like they're witnessing vastly different scenes. Atsushi looks like the guy behind him in class farted loudly, Kunikida is holding up his notebook like he's a police holding up his badge as he arrests a hard to catch serial killer, Dazai looks like someone just complimented his coat, and Rokuzo just seems all around confused. Like what's going on here
You know I never really thought about why Rokuzo was never mourned. I meam Asagiri is fantastic at writing trauma... so why would he leave Rokuzo out? Anyways then I proceeded to realize that Oda mirrors Kunikida

Арт к главе 19 выглядит как фотография. На ней изображены Фукудзава, Куникида, Рампо и Йосано. Можно предположить, что других детективов в агентстве на тот период нет. Дата: год: 200х. То есть от 2000 до 2009. В Японии дату указывают в формате «год, месяц, день», следовательно, можно предположить, что месяц — шестой (июнь).
День рождения Куникиды — 30 августа. В каноне ему 22 года, как и Дазаю.
Надо определить, за сколько лет до канонных событий была сделана фотография. Задачи сводятся к определению минимально возможного возраста Куникиды (это легче, новеллы строятся вокруг него). Однако стоит держать в уме, что его рост уже достаточно близок к канону. Дазай вот с 18 до 22 вырос на 181-174 = 7 см. (Анкета темной эры из гайдбука и канонная из манги). Ну да ладно, Йосано любит носить каблуки, но может надеть и невысокие, они оба с Рампо стоят не очень-то прямо...

К.; Куникида уже достаточно долго работает в вдв, чтобы: Катай из его рассказов составил достаточно полное представление о характере Рампо, месяц назад помог вда раскрыть одно дело своими хакерскими навыками.
Скорее всего, Катай ушёл из агентства до того, как там появился Дазай. Его никак не упоминают в «экзамене», а он бы нехило облегчил задачи Куникиде, если бы работал вместо Рокузо. Всё это к чему? "Фото" из 19 главы могло быть сделано на полтора года раньше «экзамена», в июне года "канон минус четыре", более ранних сведений об агентстве у нас буквально 🤏 ничерта. Только примерное время создания и появления Йосано. Поэтому загадывать дальше уже необоснованно. (Ну вот когда Куникида присоединился к вда?) Если для "канон минус 4" взять максимально возможное число, 2009, то "сейчас" - 2013, а "экзамен" в 2011.
К тому же, манга начала выходить только в декабре 2012 года, практически 2013))) Ещё одно обоснование: брать что-то меньшее — неудобно по техническому наполнению мира, большее — немного опасно загадывать вперёд надолго.
Если фото сделано в "год канона минус три", то придётся объяснять отсутствие Катая там его социофобией. Если в "год канона минус два", то отсутствие Дазая — его тараканами и постоянным отстранением от агентства. Куникида и Йосано молодцы, как всегда: оставили место для отсутствующего коллеги, чтобы можно было подумать о том, кто не захотел фоткаться.
Если мы по этой же схеме пробежимся по календарю, считая, что экзамен Дазая происходил в декабре, то подойдут года: 2001 и 2007 или 2002 (но там 7 декабря — суббота). Канонные времена настали через 2 года и несколько месяцев, то есть варианты: 2003, 2010 или (спорно) 2004. Все эти варианты особого доверия не вызывают.
UPD от 11 июня 2025:
Но: если мы решим, что действие происходит в феврале, а не январе, таймлайн изменится. Основание — англоперевод новеллы: там сказано просто — "глубокой зимой".
И вдруг - восьмого числа. Когда на русском седьмое 🤦♀️ Кто молодец и перепутал числа? Мне что, всё пересчитать?! Ааааааааааа хелп. Надо по постановке проверить, вдруг там числа были ಥ_ಥ
В одном испанском и итальянском переводе это восьмое. Причем на итальянском середина зимы. Но в другом английском переводе седьмое число. Окей, 7 января выглядит все еще достаточно убедительно.
Вообще на самом деле логичнее, что шеф Танеда устроил Дазая работать с января. И будь то 7 или 8 число в 1 главе, 2011 год по календарю подходит для вступительного экзамена, следовательно, 2013 - в каноне.
P.S.: не воспринимайте это всерьёз, может, Кафка и сам не знает, какой сейчас год; может, с другими данными канона что-то однажды не сойдется.
