Hi! While you're giving post-canon updates, I thought I'd check up on those guards that Scar sent to the torment nexus in BTDOM. How are they enjoying their eternal damnation? :3
Hey! Thanks for the ask! They’re dying over and over again!
Just started reading "Be the Death of Me" by @seriouslycalamitous three chapters in and I'm already obsessed
Calam you're so incredible at what you do, and I love your work so much, and and and
Hey, these are my thoughts on Be the Death of Me and Midnight Strangers both by @seriouslycalamitous
Spoilers for both BTOM and up to chapter 13 for MS
BTDOM:
I love the dynamic between Scar and Grian. Even faced with a literal god, Grian keeps the way he is. He doesn’t watch what he says with Scar. He says things like that he should go away and messes with him on the regular.
Despite the fic being on the shorter side(in terms of chapters not words) from the friendship forming to the romance nothing felt rushed. It had good pacing and didn't overwhelm me with lore and the universe specified details. I didn’t feel like I needed to go back and refresh my memory on what I had already read.
This might be a tiny thing but Scar’s laugh is described absolutely perfectly. It brought me an immense amount of joy. In the same sense of having the ability to incorporate Scar’s IRL disability but also making sure that he was like his in minecraft persona. Also with Scars dyslexia making a small appearance when Grian would fluster him when Scar was talking through the flowers.
The detail of Cleo's eyes growing a darker red as Grain got closer to death was a nice touch. I loved the slight foreshadowing. I only realized after an ask that was sent.
The detail of Grian being an builder in a story never crossed my mind though it was pretty damn obvious and I can't believe that I didn't think of it sooner.
This is a me thing but I love the trope of a non human forgetting how humans work. I found it hilarious when Scar would make funny comments about how humans work.
Impulse being the God of Hospitality was spot on as well as Ren being the God of War. Definitely very in character. Not to mention Scar? God of chaos? perfect. Also that Scar didn’t seem entirely bad or ill intentioned.
Not to mention the very real human feeling part with Grian cooking for Scar. Or both the nightmare parts.
It’s so cute that they both wanted to be close to each other despite the fact they had an entire temple to the two of them. They all felt real and very cozy. Like a hug.
Also the ending of Impulse Scar and Grian all being friends felt like a little nod to giggs whether intended or not that made me smile.
Honestly the entire thing was absolutely amazing and I will for sure re-read it at some point in the future. I'd like to read it again to see what details I missed in the start!
MS:
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, I love Calam’s way of keeping Grian, well, Grian. Not just in BTOM but in MS as well. Grian is faced with a god? He tells the god to simply shut up and let him work(even though he only knew after a while). Grian is faced with the scariest guy in the city that could kill him at any moment no second thoughts? He gives the guy more ideas. It’s one of the most Grian things to do. Grian being a pain in the ass to someone who easily overpowers him is seriously starting to become one of my favorite things about reading these.
Again nothing felt rushed.
Calam has got Scar’s rapid use of words down. Scar has got a specific way of speaking and MS has. Got. It. Down. Ringmaster got Grian a watch and his use of words sped up. Less pauses and less commas. He’s hiding that he stole it (terribly but his efforts don’t go un-noticed). It literally sounds like Scar and the attention to detail is so amazing.
While reading chapter 11 for some reason I forgot Scar was supposed to be a sort of a bad guy in the story. His humanity in that chapter was so real and easily out-shined the bad things he's done (of course not in a bad way). But it made me think that even people who are supposed to be "bad" in media aren't always all bad.
Again the nods to Scar’s dyslexia and his physical disability are always an amazing touch. It’s genuinely a joy to see them incorporated.
This is for chapter 13:
Starting out with Mumbo and the others in the vet clinic. Mumbo and everyone is so sweet. Making Grian soup and being so sweet to him being “sick.”
I was just waiting for Mumbo to find out Scar was lying about where Grian was. I was SO scared for their entire interaction. I was just waiting for mumbo to realize Grain was missing. Gosh the suspense was impeccable. Scar and Mumbo being friends would be so cute. Just wait till Scar is in a better mood. And less murderous.
For the character death tag I personally am hoping for Ringmaster to beat the living crap out of one of the G’s.
And finally Calam is truly an amazing writer. I can’t wait to read more of their amazing work.
