From a 1:31 min long outro to a 3:18 min completed masterpiece finished after three years that embraces this yearning for a little calm, a little soothing, a place where you can find the comfort you need, this little Blue Side within yourself that cools your mind. A soft guitar, a wind chime sending tingles down your spine adding airiness and dimension, a steady beat, wistful vocals accompanying something more akin to spoken word poetry/storytelling than rap in its more standard understanding. It’s a feeling as though listening to the wandering thoughts of a friend, or perhaps your own as you sit and watch the ocean or the evening sky, alone but not lonely.

Hobi truly managed to capture this blue feeling wonderfully, but also in a contrasting way from how we saw Tae use blue, in this case it feels warm despite the cold association of the color, despite the sadness associated with it. It has a melancholy to it, of course, and yet it doesn’t feel sad. It’s hopeful. Comforting. Reflecting upon old thoughts, upon the day that's passed, upon a memory or a moment, the outcome of that reflection not really the point, the focus rather on the act itself. Beautiful.

It’s a wonderful gift and way to celebrate the Hope World anniversary and was accompanied by a note from Hobi opening up about his thoughts behind wishing to finish the song now three years later, how he didn’t feel like he could finish it in the past, and what had fueled him to write Hope World years ago, how in a way he misses the mindset he had back then but at the same time hopes the song shows us how he’s grown and progressed with his music and as artist. And he certainly has, all the evidence shining brightly in every second and word of this full length version.

The cover is marvelous and meaningful, too. It’s a bit messy upon first glance, chaotic even, filled with lots of little details that don’t seem cohesive or attention grabbing, and yet when you actually take the time to look closer you realize how perfect it is. How it captures the song, those thoughts going through your mind, little pieces of it scattered throughout this evening feeling, some a little smaller, some a little bigger, a little visually louder, overlapping at times, and yet perfectly visualizing what’s going on inside your head before the Blue Side ‘kicks in’ and you reach that calm place. Outstanding and beautifully thought out. I applaud both the artist, Eddie Kang, and Hobi.

What’s funny is though that this gift wasn’t necessarily completely unexpected, seeing as he mentioned March 2nd in his birthday vlive, and yet, after BH posted that schedule for the vlogs, everyone simply expected to get the first one at midnight. Yet instead we received this. I’m incredibly grateful once more for the honestly with which the members create music, especially their more personal solo releases, the love and care with which they handle their art and the trust they have in us that we’ll understand it, that we’ll cherish it just as much or even more than they hope we will.

I’ll definitely continue listening to it a lot, as well as their other recent (and not so recent) SoundCloud releases, as I continue working on my upcoming posts. I feel like I’m a little behind on what I wanted to do, but listening to Blue Side, it truly did calm my own anxious mind, reminded me that it’s okay to take my time, right? I’m jumping between posts and working on my thoughts on the BE-hind Full Story Interviews but it’ll take a hot minute more. For reference, my so far still incomplete thoughts on Seokjin’s interview alone already take up nearly 600 words...
