The Marty Paich Quartet Featuring Art Pepper ‎– Marty Paich Quartet マーティー・ペイチ名義でありながら、アート・ペッパーの代表作！ 1955年前後モダン・ジャズの前期で、渋めのマニア受けするアルバムの4枚目は、アート・ペッパーの隠れ名盤。 1956年8-9月(日にち不明)、Radio Recorders, Hollywood, CA録音。 オリジナルは #TampaRecords (TP28), High - Fidelity、本盤は音のクオリティが高いV.S.O.P. Pete Jolly "Duo, Trio, Quartet" 高音質｢予感｣楽しみアルバム最後の7枚目は、もう1枚ピート･ジョリーです。 でも、スペック的には何でもない普通のアルバム。なぜ高音質かって？実は予感は全くせずに、人気ある可愛いジャケットで購入してみたようなものなのですが、聴いてみて最後の7枚目に加えてしまいました！ 1955年3月7,9日録音、 #RCAVictorRecords レーベル(LPM-1125)。 #PeteJolly (p) #BillPerkins (ts) #BuddyClark (b) #ArtMardigan (ds), #MelLewis (ds) タイトル通り、曲が進むごとにメンバーが増えていくという珍しい構成。始めの4曲Side 1-1～4がピアノとベースのDuo、Side 1-5～Side 2-2の4曲はドラムが加わりTrio、残りのSide 2-3～2-6の4曲にはサックスが加わりQuartet。12曲で40分とかからないので、どの曲もとてもコンパクトなのですが、聴き手を飽きさせない演奏ですね。 弾むように弾けるようなデュオの1曲目。バラード調に切なく始まり途中からテンポ・アップ、そしてまたバラード調で終わる1-2, 3、ベース・ソロがフィーチャーされている1-4。トリオの1-5は、ワクワクするようなピアノに続いてA.マーディガンのブラシ、そして束の間のブレイクを挟んで転がり出す1-5。ソロは水を得た魚の如く楽しく愉快に転がるジョリーのピアノ。テーマ部分でのベースが印象的な1-6。Side 2 は、ブラシに導かれて始まる軽快な2-1、ピアノの低音にワクワクする2-2、そしていよいよB.パーキンスのサックスが入るクァルテットへ。ここからドラマーがM.ルイスに交代。2曲立て続けにアップ・テンポで弾むような2-3, 4 。転がりまくるピアノ。3歳の時からアコーディオンをやっていたそうで、そのせいでしょうか。その後幾分テンポが落ちてサラリとした2-5、最後はゆったりとしたバラードで締めくくります。 MONOなので、Shure SC35Cの暖かみのある音質で軽快かつ優しく包まれるのが良いと思います。 苗字の"Jolly"には｢陽気な｣とか｢上機嫌の｣とか｢素敵な｣といった意味があるそう。名前にぴったりの、聴き終えると心が明るくなるプレイ。 ぜひ1度、聴いて欲しいアルバムですね。 #jazz #fuzey #vinyl #jazzvinyl #vinylcollection #jazzrecords #recordcollection #ジャズ #スイングジャーナル #レコード ※作品を知り、ジャズの素晴らしさを伝えたい。様々なソースをアレンジ、先輩諸氏に感謝。 https://www.instagram.com/p/Bythg--Dckp/?igshid=15d0wrjdqkxi

Sometimes rechannelling mono recordings into simulated stereo comes off pretty well, sometimes it don't. This album is a case where it didn't work so well, especially listening through headphones. Still a great album of the hits of Buddy Clark, a Crosby-esque style of vocalist. Up through the 1950's, it was common to have multiple versions of a popular song on the market, simultaneously. "Ballerina" was one of those songs. 4 versions were found on Billboard's pop charts in early 1948. Vaughn Monroe had the most popular version, spending 10 weeks at #1. Bing Crosby and Jimmy Dorsey also cracked the top 10, while Buddy Clark's version peaked at #5, the 2nd most popular version. Cashbox ranked records differently, lumping all popular versions, together for 1 chart position. On their chart, "Ballerina" also spent 10 weeks at #1, with Monroe and Clark's versions showing all 10 weeks, while Crosby's was ranked for 9 of the 10. More on Buddy Clark; he's virtually forgotten, now, but in the late 1940's, he was one of pop music's top vocalists, scoring 3 #1 hits on Billboard in 1947-48.
