Monster-lover story where it's an isopod type critter, and he always clings to your back when you go places. It looks cute because he's tiny (isopod males are frequently smaller than females, yes i have three colonies), but he's literally being possessive and ensuring no one else can even look at you Down There because that is His.
(This is an actual behavior in isopods. Males will hitch a ride on a female they either want or have already paired with, all to prevent another male from taking her. I find it kind of funny because my males are often less than half the size of the female. I don't see it often in my colonies but I've come across it a couple times in a couple years of having them.)

If people don't know you they simply think the interesting thing on your back is a gimmick backpack, but the closer you get both distance and socially the faster they learn that the thing on your back is actually your partner.
The chitinous thing on your back is simply the most comfortable place for him to be during the day, especially as he is more nocturnal than you, but even if the sun makes him grumpy the idea of leaving you alone during the day makes him furious. So, he clings, fills the instinctive need to be close to his mate with the comfort of knowing that he's visibly with you during the day by hanging off your back like a strange breathing backpack.
Blessed with his unique hybrid nature he's not a burden as he clings to you, face nuzzled into your back as he keeps himself pressed close and protecting his sensitive eyes at the same time. However that doesn't mean he won't poke his head out, bearing the unique markings and colouration of his nature as an isopod hybrid just to hiss at a random person that has gotten too close to you, black eyes sharp as he squints and rattles dangerously till the intruder back off.
