“She’s gone, for now,” McGonagall told them as soon as she’d closed the door, not making them wait. “I have no doubt that she will be back,” James stepped forward.
“What do we need to do? How can we keep Regulus safe?” McGonagall looked at him pityingly.
“Whatever you can, Mr Potter. She is no longer permitted on school grounds, but I would advise you all to keep to the castle and not to wander off. I won’t ban any of you from visiting Hogsmeade; however, if you wish to remain a free man, Mr Black, I do recommend that you abstain from any further trips for the time being. For now, though, it is safe for you to return to your common rooms,” She left them to it, closing the door again behind her.
“How did she know?” Regulus asked, looking at each person in the room as though they had the answers. “She knew exactly where we’d be. How did she know?”
“I bet it was that git Snivellus,” Sirius growled.
“Oh, leave him alone, Sirius. Severus isn’t responsible for every little thing that goes wrong in your lives,” Lily snapped at Sirius.
“Just the majority,” Peter murmured under his breath, quickly dodging the bat-bogey hex Lily sent his way. “Well, he is! Only the other day he was…” Barty slapped his hand over Peter’s mouth and dragged him behind Remus.
“Only the other day, what?” Lily asked, her eyes narrowing as she stared at Sirius and Remus.
“He said something about knowing our mother was on her way to get Regulus,” Sirius told her.
“But he must have been joking, right? How would he know that?”
“He’s been her spy for a while,” Regulus stepped forward. “Did anyone see him in the Three Broomsticks when Crouch was there?” Lily gasped, covering her mouth with her hands.
“He was there. He came outside as we were heading in. There was a man a little way ahead of him, he looked like a ministry official, and Severus was following him.”
“So Snape knows my dad was there,” Barty said bitterly. “No wonder Burger Face tried to get you back. We’ve got her scared,”
“I’m sorry, what did you just call my mother?” Sirius asked, turning to Barty with mischievous glee in his eyes.
“Burger face. You know, Walburga. Burga, burger, Burger Face. I think it suits her. Never have I wanted to throw a burger at someone's face as much as I do hers, a proper Muggle one, you know, those cheap ones that are everywhere.”
“Oh, Crouch, I think I’m in love,” Sirius swooned, making them all laugh.
“I think I’m ready to climb into bed,” Regulus said quietly, so only James could hear him as he stifled a yawn.
“Yeah, me too,” James yawned, Regulus’s yawn catching until everyone in the room had yawned at least once.
“Gryffindor Tower?” James suggested.
“Yep,” they all answered in unison, even the Slytherins. James didn’t mind; they could entertain themselves while he and Regulus entertained each other.
