As many of you already know, the bulk of my book collection went to @therootandthebloom here in Butte earlier this year as part of that organization's efforts to turn the historic Jacobs House into a center for visiting writers as well as a research library. It took several days of packing and hauling (as seen here in this photo from August), but I was gratified to see the books land in a worthy place. Furthermore, I'm honored to have them serve as the seeds for the Edwin C. Dobb Memorial Peace Library. Thanks to Susan Dunlap for writing this wonderful article about Ed's enduring legacy in today's @montanastandard: https://mtstandard.com/news/local/butte-writer-ed-dobb-memorialized-with-new-library/article_8c62daa6-92e2-5a23-9e1c-b49256c7701f.html I was shattered by the news of Ed's too-early passing in July of this year. Though Ed and I only met in person a couple of times over the years, he introduced himself via email in 2010 shortly after my interview with Tom McGuane appeared in New West magazine. This was just a year after I'd moved to the Mining City. Ed asked how I ended up in Butte and, with tongue halfway in his cheek, said, "Clearly you're mad" and went on to say, "Doubtless you've now heard the old joke: One of the best things about living in Butte is that Montana is close by. I think how a person responds to the quirky, often forbidding island ruin of Butte says a lot about a person's character and sensibility. The town needs more people like you and your wife." To quote Bogie at the end of Casablanca, it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship (albeit a mostly electronic one). I treasure Ed's emails and I will be forever and deeply touched that my name is associated with his through the book collection at the Jacobs House. #ButteMT #butteelevated #Montana #montanagram #miningcity #books #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #instabook #instabooks #peacelibrary (at Butte, Montana) https://www.instagram.com/p/B37zPMWJ4KJ/?igshid=cihwb1ur24wg
