Im.not sure I agree with Brennan-as-Occtis re the worst part of pain is fear of death. Maybe when its not chronic.
Theres definity a variable psychological component, like psychic damage or how much thinking real-estate pain takes up alongside the purely physical sensation. Like a sharp pain can be entirely distracting for a split second you have no other thoughts, but an ache youve had for days wears on the mind very differrently. Its like marathoned distress and exhaustion rather than all at once in q sprint, which can be worse. A bit like being stuck in fight or flight for hours/days/weeks at a time, its a body state meant for quick reaction to danger, not very slow tigers.
In my mind, Occtis has chronic pain now. Its not acute, its not a warning of new injury or danger, its just a sensation and an amount of fatigue and distress that he just has now. Chronic pain is not inmediate fear of dying. Its like depression in that its not entirely welcome but it hangs around and you eventually accept it and get used to it and put up with it, and sometimes it flares and things are worse but mostly they just live here now.
