Underrated moment in TLH:

When Leo just fucking KNOWS how to fly a helicopter. He like puts a hand on it and can instantly recite the make and model, knows it’s top speed and altitude and how much fuel it has left. And then he fucking flies it. He’s 15, untrained, and unlicensed, and he’s flying a helicopter. Has anyone talked about how Hephaestus kids are seriously OP?

leo valdez has a strong love-hate relationship with your cabin. emphasis on love. and hate. mostly because it seems like every time he shows up he leaves with glitter in his hair, new rumors about the two of you and his heartbeat doing something extremely inconvenient whenever you smile at him.

tonight though, it was your fault. you caught him after dinner, wrench in hand, shirt streaked with oil and said “you, me, my bunk. don’t make it weird” and skipped off.

it’s not weird. totally not weird. it’s only weird because now he was on your way too fluffy pink comforter now, with his back against your knees as you run your hands through his wild curls.

“hold still” you murmur, combing out a knot near the back of his head. “when was the last time you brushed through this?”

“uhh.. never?” he offered. “you know this is deeply un-hephaestus behavior. we care about fire and tools.. not haircaire.”

“mmhm?” you tug a little harder than necessary, he yelps, you smile. “keep complaining and see what happens valdez”

from across the cabin, one of your siblings snicker. there’s whispers, there always are whenever you two are together. the resident forge boy and the aphrodite kid who can get him to do anything with one look. the way he follows you around like a lovesick puppy.

“so” you say, twisting a small section of hair between your fingers. “how’s that flame brain of yours tonight?”

“still flaming” he mutters “ hey does this mean i’m like officially pretty now?”

you lean down until your lips graze his ear. “leo, you’ve always been pretty. just been a little bit of a mess about it”

you swear you feel his shoulders tense, a little clearing of his throat. the tips of his ears turn bright red, the same shade as the sunset painting your curtains. you hum, pleased, and begin braiding. gentle, fingers weaving through his thick curls, pausing every so often to brush your nails through his scalp. each time, he shivers like you have him under some spell. who knows? maybe you do.

“can’t believe you roped me into this.” he grumbles, pretending to be annoyed but can’t help the way his voice naturally softens. “if my cabin finds out i’m toast.”

“oh please, they already know.” you tie off one section with a tiny pink elastic. “charles saw you leaving with me. i give it about five minutes before they start asking when the wedding is.”

he groans “worst cabin ever.”

“hey!” you pinch his shoulder “you love my cabin.”

he huffs “ i tolerate your cabin. i love y-“

he stops himself. you go still, stopping near his hairline. close enough to feel the heat radiate off of him.

“what was that?” you grin, trying not to full on laugh. “you love what, valdez?”

he clears his throat. “nothing, just keep going.”

“hmm.” you tug playfully at his braid, then let it go. “always knew you had a soft spot for me.”

he makes a strangled sound. “wha- no, i? yo-”

you laugh, leaning forward until your chin rests on the top of his head. “relax. it suits you.”

there’s a pause, then you feel him reach back. his grease-smudged hand closes around your ankle, he’s warm, solid, gentle. when he tilts his head to glance up at you, his eyes are impossibly soft. that silly, half-broken boy grin is nowhere to be found. instead, there’s just leo, looking at you like you’re the sun and he’s never seen it before.

“you suit me,” he says quietly.

your breathe catches, about to say something, something brave. but then one of your siblings across the rooms shriek interrupts any former plans of that happening. “DREW!!” drew painfully sighs, slapping 5 drachmas in her hand. “i so told you guys, i gave it a week.” she says, pointing to everyone in the cabin.

silena chimes in, “how long do you give it till they kiss? has to be like 3 days, right?” talking about the two of you as if you’re not just two bunks away

leo groans, slaps a hand over his face, and buries it in your blanket. you just giggle and ruffle his freshly braided hair.

“c’mon, valdez,” you whisper, lips brushing his temple. “maybe they’re right.”

he peeks up at you through his fingers. “yeah?”

you grin. “yeah.”

Some downsides to the demigods powers/just being a demigod in general

Quick TW, I advise you tread with caution because some of these can be darker than the rest

1. When Will heals he's literally putting a piece of his own health into someone's body, so if he goes too far he'll end up killing himself

2. All the Apollo kids have very very sensitive ears, which contributes to sensory issues, getting overwhelmed, and meltdowns

3. Hazel/the Hecate kids struggle separating reality from illusion sometimes and can be prone to psychosis and hallucinations

4. Hypnos kids very ironically have insomnia

5. Similarly, Poseidon kids are prone to dehydration

6. Zeus kids are obviously asthmatic

7. The Hades kids have hypermobility issues/hEDS

8. Any chthonic demigods also struggle with fainting disorders

9. Some Hermes kids have ironic navigation issues, and can never remember any directions they're given

10. Apollo kids can't lie even if their life is directly on the line

11. Aphrodite kids are prone to NPD and struggle to form relationships

12. Ares kids are just as prone to BPD or bipolar and struggle with vulnerability and letting people in

13. Rachel commonly dissociates and sometimes feels like her body isn't actually hers

14. Hazel has problems with stiff muscles and her body feeling like a rock itself

15. Frank sometimes forgets he's actually a person

16. Athena kids are prone to anxiety and panic disorders, paranoia, and agoraphobia

26. Some Apollo kids can scream so loud they can burst eardrums or even stun those close enough, although this usually leaves them with raw, bleeding throats

28. Hermes kids usually mask their real personalities with a "chaotic mask" so they usually forget what they're really like

29. Iris kids are very sensitive to light and often need to wear sunglasses just to be able to walk around because of retina sensitivity

30. Occasionally, Athena kids can experience degeneration in their optic nerves that can cause blindness and eventually spread to other areas of the body (bilateral optic neuropathy is what I believe it's called but feel free to correct me on that)

It’s very few the campers that actually follow the sitting-at-their-designated-table rule. I mean, let’s be real— these are troublesome kids/teens who likely have some resent towards their godly parents for not being present in their lives (resentment that has been building since before they learned the why to it), and with how the gods are, a lot of these kids are also unclaimed. It takes Chiron a while, but he eventually reluctantly lets this happen.

Since those bright orange shirts are a must to wear, the majority of campers have theirs customized. Cutting out collars, cropping them, making them sleeveless, adding embroidery— you name it, they’ve done it. It’s the only way to get them to wear that hideous color.

Satyrs (the ones who are protectors like Grover was) have their own smaller cabin near the big house.

Also the big house is used to house mortal guests.

This is a huge one for me but— the barrier. Certain mortals can enter camp if a god allows it. There are certain exceptions to this rule, as some mortals (those who can see through the mist for example) already have entry on their own. But regular mortals (such as for example Paul Blofis, who has no connections to the gods) would be allowed entry into camp if a god (any god: Olympian, older ones, Titans, etc.) permitted them to. This entails that the gods do keep a close eye on the borders of CHB and their children altogether.

They have nightly campfires. They start just after dinner, and the younger campers stay for around 1-2 hours before they are led back to their cabins by the respective cabin heads. After that, the older campers are allowed a free space where they can simply be teenagers and hang out with their friends up until 10pm-ish.

It was no secret the kids of Cabin 9 ran a side business to make some extra cash. It was pretty lucrative, given that there would always be a line of demigods waiting to have their weapon(s) of choice customized. Custom engravings, patterns cast into handles, ergonomic handpiece add-ons, and so much more. Name it, and it would be done for the right price, forged with impeccable quality.

And that was how Clarisse La Rue found herself heading to the forge just east of the strawberry fields with a thin paper in one hand and a small bag of golden drachmas in the other. The edges of the slip were just barely singed, and the writing on it looked nearly incomprehensible to many eyes, scribbled notes of her order confirmation and gods only knew what else. It didn’t matter to her, she just needed it to get her dagger and go.

Crowds parted for her like the Red Sea, once-lively conversations coming to a grinding halt as she walked straight through crowds and groups with nothing more than a glare and a sharp look in any general direction. 

In no time at all, the familiar sounds of machinery clanking, fire hissing and crackling, and hammers striking metal filled the air. It was the forge, the singular place where one could guarantee there would be at least one child of Hephaestus in there at all hours of the day. 

She pushed open the heavy metal door, swinging it wide open soundlessly despite its obvious weight. And what a sight she was greeted with. You were there alone, hunched over a piece of blisteringly hot metal, pounding away at it with a hammer in one hand and a pair of tongs in the other.

Something about you entranced her. 

She didn’t know if it was the way your hair was pulled into a low ponytail, some loose strands clinging to the sides of your face, the way you subconsciously bit your lip as you focused completely on the red-hot metal in front of you. Or perhaps, it was the way your muscles rippled in the dim firelight as you struck the metal again and again, a thin sheen of sweat covering the exposed portions of your skin from both the heat and the exertion. 

Maybe it was a combination or something else entirely. 

As she gazed at you, a light blush dusted her cheeks as she came to the realization that you weren’t wearing much while working. The heat of the forge had led you to forgo wearing a shirt entirely, said shirt reduced to a tiny, crumpled gray bundle of fabric in the corner of the room. You were left wearing a sports bra, dusted with ash and soot and a pair of baggy sweatpants resting just above your hips.

It wasn’t as if Clarisse had never seen people dressed in less before. Hell, she’d seen her own fair amount of skin for various reasons. But this time, it seemed different. The slip of paper and bag of coins in her hands were forgotten momentarily as she simply stared at you from the doorway.

The way the dim light of the roaring furnace illuminated you from behind gave you an almost ethereal glow, the edges of the flames flickering around your moving silhouette. 

She could see the muscles in your arm and shoulder tensing and relaxing with every ever-so-precise swing of the hammer, and she found herself silently watching you work from the doorway. 

Ultimately, it was the soft clinking coming from the bag of drachmas Clarisse held in her hand that drew your attention away from the project in front of you. Your head snapped up, tense and a tad startled from the sudden sound, having been so zoned into your work that you hadn’t noticed her presence. 

The hammer in your hand dropped to the metal workbench with a loud clang, the sound reverberating throughout the forge, ripping Clarisse from the glossed-over, hazy look in her eyes as she watched you move just moments ago, having been completely and utterly under your spell.

“Shit-!” you exclaimed, jumping slightly and wincing at the harsh sound, eyes widening further as you’re greeted with the sight of a Clarisse who seemed far too casual compared to how she normally treated campers, especially given her outward distaste towards children of Hephaestus. 

And all of a sudden, you’re all too aware of your lack of a shirt and your cheeks flare with an embarrassed bright red flush.

Flushed the same color as the heated metal in front of you, Clarisse noted absentmindedly. It wasn’t a look she didn’t like. But of course, she would never admit that. The big, bad Clarisse La Rue flustered over something as insignificant as muscles on a girl? Impossible.

Her attention is drawn back to you, observing as you scurry to the other side of the room to grab your stashed-away shirt, slipping the loose grey fabric over your body, any and all views of the muscles she had seen just moments prior completely disappearing in a matter of seconds.

After having taken a few calming breaths, you steeled yourself for a barrage of snarky remarks that you were sure would come spewing out of the Ares cabin counselor’s mouth like acid out of the myrmeke’s mouths, but they never came.

Instead, you’re greeted with the sight of a Clarisse who seemed to be a bit flustered? Her eyes didn’t meet yours for a moment before she straightened herself out. Before your very eyes, you watched her cool and collected facade slip over her like a mask, and that trademark smirk of hers tugged at the corners of her lips.

“I’m here to pick up an order, under my name,” she remarks, holding up the bag of drachmas and thin slip of paper in an outstretched hand. Her gaze seemed like it was scrutinizing everything about your appearance from the baggy grey shirt that hung loosely over your frame to the soot just barely smudged on your forehead. Whether it was a good or bad look you had no idea, subconsciously shrinking into the shadows of the dimly lit forge.

“Right, right, La Rue…” you trail off nervously, scanning the room for the rack that held completed orders and leafing through the tags attached to each object. “La Rue, La Rue, La Rue, where is it-?” you muse to yourself, repeating her last name in a hushed tone until the sight of it comes into view. The dagger she had ordered was at the edge of the table, with the request for a heavyweight handle and an etching of her initials into the butt of it.

Normally, Clarisse would have found your behavior annoying if it were coming from anyone else, but oddly enough, she quite liked the way her last name rolled off your tongue. It felt almost natural, too natural. Quickly, she brushed away the lingering thoughts about how you had looked almost god-like with the flame from the roaring furnace glowing behind you, the thoughts of what your skin would feel like under her hands. 

After a beat of silence, you grabbed said dagger, placed a little ball of clay over its razor-sharp tip, and slipped it into a small drawstring bag, pulling it closed. 

“That’ll be five golden drachmas, La Rue, or fifteen silver ones. Whatever works for you” you say as you hand her the bag, other hand outstretched for the paper she held and to take the coins. She dropped the five golden coins in your palm and grabbed the bag to turn on her heel and walk out without another word.

Or so you thought.

“Thanks for the weapon. I’ll see you around, pretty girl.”
