something interesting: lesia and evil carrie are both evil characters who were just born like that and have no tragic backstory to explain why they ended up with absolutely no empathy and only self-interest instead. in order to find out why they’re different, let’s imagine them both in evil carrie’s situation.
evil carrie inadvertently saved hana from survival sex work by allowing her to take and eat the human hearts from carrie’s own prey. because of this, hana feels deeply in debt to carrie and can’t help but offer to repay carrie for saving her life. hana is also annoyed to no end by this because carrie takes everything like a joke and clearly doesn’t really CARE about hana—what hana perceives as a great lifesaving deed was basically nothing for carrie and carrie feels no strong emotions about hana (or anyone else, for that matter—not even scipio, who is just some temporary fun for her).
so evil carrie thinks, “awesome, hana feels indebted to me! i can totally take advantage of this!” and gleefully asks hana to do Literally Whatever for her. like “go shine my vinyl boots” or “can you bring me a pineapple bun? i don’t want to walk to the bakery that’s just down the street”. hana hates that her conscience won’t let her refuse these inane commands. when she comes back from the bakery carrie is having sex with scipio in the bed she shares with hana
however, the thing with lesia is that she only acts out of self-interest and is incapable of understanding that other people think differently from how she does. she doesn’t understand that hana feels indebted to her because she thinks “hana is lying to me to gain my favor and pretending that she’s grateful because she has some kind of ulterior motive, just like every other person in this world”. so in this situation lesia would probably match hana’s energy and pretend she also sees saving hana’s life as a great act that hana SHOULD be thankful for, even though it was actually nothing to her.
