Sky Hopinka (US, 1984)

The language in the calligrams employed in “I’ll Remember You as You Were, Not as What You’ll Become” (2016), is excerpted from early-twentieth-century ethnographic texts written by anthropologist Paul Radin about the Ho-Chunk Nation.

The films of Sky Hopinka (Ho-Chunk Nation/ Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians) aesthetically intervene in photography and cinema’s historical complicities with settler colonialism.

In infrequent scenes of Native groups or gatherings, he works with their images generously and protectively. The camera might linger while pointing down, be kept at a distance, adjust the focus to blur, or intermittently turn away from a dance or ritual. Hopinka uses these simple cinematographic moves as well as mesmerizing, technically complex postproduction effects to safeguard Indigenous peoples’ images even while celebrating their presence.

Jest też kojarzony z imieniem Izmaela, mitycznego przodka Arabów i brata Izaaka, mitycznego praojca Żydów. Ulica Izzaka mieści się w sercu najstarszej części Kazimierza, żydowskiej dzielnicy Krakowa.

Arabic calligram known as "The Lion of Ali" - واللهعلي بن ابي طالب الغالبرضي الله تعالى عنهوكرم الله وجهه - (God is pleased with Ali ibn Ali Talib; may God Almighty honor him). It's also associated with Isma'il/Ishmael, the mythical ancestor of the Arabs and brother of Issac, the mythical forefather of the Jews. Isaac Street is in the oldest core of Kazimierz, the Jewish district of Kraków.

The Ainu Motif of Protection

As shown inside, the Ainu culture absolutely isn’t homogenous & never was. With those, this should illustrate just what the purposes of the designs are & the kinds of protection & synergy they bring for the partners involved. A good many of them are used quite like calligrams as well as protection as they can’t directly be made to look like people or other animals.
