TWO NEW GAMES
After moving my board game collection its finally sank in that I need to be more selective with my adds and begin to purge games I don’t return to. It’ll be a work in progress.
In the meantime, I played three new games that are delightful adds to the collection!
Camel Up is a game where 2-8 players bet on camels racing around a track. I think the description on boardgamegeek.com sums it up better than I could:
“In Camel Up, up to eight players bet on five racing camels, trying to suss out which will place first and second in a quick race around a pyramid. The earlier you place your bet, the more you can win — should you guess correctly, of course. Camels don't run neatly, however, sometimes landing on top of another one and being carried toward the finish line. Who's going to run when? That all depends on how the dice come out of the pyramid dice shaker, which releases one die at a time when players pause from their bets long enough to see who's actually moving!”
The camels don’t belong to any one player, and multiple players can bet on the same camels. Each turn you choose one action: flip the pyramid and reveal a die which moves that color camel, place a bet for the race’s end, pick up a betting tile for that leg, or place a tile on the route which may cause forwards or backwards movement when landed on.
A leg is when all 5 camels have moved. Then payouts happen based on who is in the top two spots. If you bet wrong, you must pay a coin. This happens repeatedly until a camel crosses the finish line. But any camels that land on the same space stack on each other, and only the topmost camel is considered in the lead.
Camel Up is great fun, and best of all it plays well with a large group. There’s an expansion that adds more ways to win money and is especially useful when you play with 6 or more. A new version is coming out soon with updated art, a plastic pyramid, and a couple of new features. Check it out!
