for day 1 of @cap-ironman rec week, an armor kink art round-up! fanart depicting steve rogers getting down and dirty with tony while tony is *in* the iron man armor is very rare, indeed, which is a crying shame as far as i'm concerned! This is an incomplete list because my interest in the fandom came in waves and for a lot of the early days (2020/21) I didn't have an Ao3 account to save bookmarks to!

** many names in history, none of them are ours by aubkae is a solid MCU Avengers Tower fic from 2012 with Steve standing up for the disadvantaged, a good portrayal of Pepper, PTSD and insomnia, and everyone feels in character. Smut is good too. What a great place to start!
** Stick With Me, Baby, I’m the Fella You Came in With by @no-gorms demonstrates Annie D's amazing use of humor and ability to write hot kissing.
** Poster Child by @sabrecmc because I was into the sex farces from the beginning, hahaha! Incredible.
** Lost Together by FestiveFerret – this one is painful, hard on the feelings, which is why I haven't got around to a more recent re-read but don't let that put you off! It hurts so good! Steve and Tony end up in a different universe and have to pretend to be soulmates. It's a delicious trope reversal.
** Overhaul by @no-gorms because it's a fic set at the compound, where Tony plays the long game but it never feels forced. It's funny and poignant. And then you've got to read Binary System because it contains a scene that makes me howl with laughter and is one of my all time faves for oblivious Tony.
** Falling Into You by @sabrecmc will always be one of my top Steve/Tony fics of all times because of the delicious trope-y mix of amnesia/friends with benefits/pining/Tony painting himself into a corner. And the first time they have sex is slightly awkward and has always lit my brain up for that reason! They do everything backwards in this story – it's delicious.
** Four (Or Five) Reasons for Kidnapping Tony Stark by scifigrl47 has some impressive world building but I also need to shout out how competent Tony is in this, and the pace of the story is amazing. The kidnapping scene in the coffee shop is so fucking good.
** A Partial Dictionary Of The 21st Century By Captain Steve Rogers, US Army by copperbadge
"Oh man, I'm going to have to sue Dick Wolf," Tony sighs, but then it cuts away to the detectives interviewing a short, manic guy in a machine shop, and Clint howls with laughter.
"I don't look like that!" Tony yells at the television.
** America Isn't Chicken by Dr_Amuly – uh, so sometimes I think about how this was the first 616 fic I read and I have to chuckle. Especially as I recently clocked it's post Civil War. They are so fucked up in this, but all I knew at the time is that I liked Steve's hand on Tony's thigh in that scene, and they're both fucking idiots:
He thought taking him from behind like this would be easier, would make it less Tony, but Steve had been kidding himself. He'd be able to recognize Tony by an elbow, by his big toe. Having Tony's face hidden from him didn't make him any less Tony. Didn't make this any less significant.
The feeling in this. Oh the feeling. It's not just a sex romp. Though that's good too.
After that it was a simple hop and a skip into ** Thrust Issues by @sineala which at this point needs no introduction, really. And yes, it's funny and angsty and it's a sex romp and Steve's got a monster dick. But it's also got a really good main plot, and for a m/m fic about Steve's cock, it's really, really, really sapphic-coded. From the friend-just-helping-a-friend-out angle, to deciding after an amazing 11/10 orgasm that your pal doesn't even like you like that – they were just being friendly, Steve being a pleasure top (total stone top vibes at times), and y'know, fisting (they're in love)... if any man deserves to be a pillow princess, it's 616 Tony.
**age is an irrational number by valtyr – so, I don't know how this ended up being the first Ultimates fic I read, but I remember reading it before I had an Ao3 account, which is wild considering how it's centred around Steve and Tony growing old together and a whole bunch of plot that would make no sense to me. Very well written, which helps. I thought all comics were the same canon, and I remember thinking that Tony having a twin was wild but I just accepted it... proving I was always ready to grapple with the crazy comics canon.
Special shout out for both **The Libertine and **Common Decency by @sineala which are two of my earliest Ults bookmarks. Both great flavours. I've actually been re-reading the latter at least once a week for... 5 weeks now? I dunno. It's clearly got a hold on me. One of my favourite characterisations that you see in both fics is Tony describing Steve's moves like a talking head in a history doc eg "his tongue forced its way past Tony's lips like he was determined to reenact the invasion of Normandy and Tony's mouth was Omaha Beach." What a nerd. Love it.

Funny enough, I didn't ship Stony for a long time, until one day I read Sineala's fics and they blew my mind. After that, there was no turning back.

No one knows Tony is Iron Man. Then Tony gets amnesia, and literally no one knows Tony is Iron Man.
Stony fics in 616 have become associated with identity porn and it's because of fics like these. Tony is just so kind and clever here, helping Steve uncover his own secret identity, sorry Iron Man's identity. Steve's worry and fondness toward Iron Man was a delight to read, I love his one track mind. Special kudos for the conversation about what it means to be a hero.
The Devil in Us All by @sineala
The year is 1982, and Steve Rogers, Captain America and working commercial artist, is living in Brooklyn and trying to make it on his own. So when a bank error leaves him unable to make rent, he does what anyone else would do in this situation: he accidentally gets a job drawing erotic illustrations for a gay bondage porn magazine.
It turns out that pornography's not a bad way to make a living. The money's decent, the work is unexpectedly fulfilling, and if many of the men Steve draws bear a certain resemblance to Tony Stark, so what? No one's going to know Steve's in love with Tony. It's not like Tony's ever going to see it. What are the odds that Tony buys gay bondage porn magazines?
Tony, meanwhile, is newly sober in the wake of the death of the Carnelian ambassador, and life's been rough for him lately. He's recently single, he's desperately lonely, and he's pining after a tragically-straight teammate he can't have. At least he can show himself a good time. But what he'd really like to know is why the guy painted on the cover of this adult magazine looks so familiar.
120k of amazing fic, with such amazing characterisation it's completely believable that Steve would end up drawing porn for cash in the 80s. Dealing with Steve growing up in the depression era, his stubbornness and his sexual awakening, all with a dash of Tony's self hatred, erectile dysfunction and notoriety. I love this fic so much ❤️

I love fics dealing with Steve getting used to living in the future. This is a raw exploration of Steve's PTSD (including memories of WWI vets dealing with PTSD), his self-worth issues and coming mechanisms. And when you're least expecting it, the fic mirrors that in Tony & his struggles with alcohol.

Eight months since the fracture, but it was raw, the wound gaped. It couldn't heal over, they were both still living in it.
I'm a huge lover of Fix-its and this fic is an excellent study character of Steve & Tony post incursions and mindwipe, in all their ugly, hurt and loving glory. One of the most satisfying fics i've read that addresses their issues and asks the important questions.

this series is THE defining series for me. it is an evocative comics-gritty narrative with a gorgeous style that defines the scope of the POV and the extent of the narrative. steve here is so sharp and visceral and tony is so fragmented and gorgeous and this helped me fall in love with both of them.
