Headcanon that Barbossa's sword skills are genuinely frightening to other pirates.

In CotBP, his crew hesitates to take him on in the cave, despite all of them being undead and him being alone.

In AWE, Sao Feng, a Pirate Lord, surrounds him and Elizabeth in his bathhouse, outnumbering them by a long shot, but the second Barbossa suddenly gains a weapon out of nowhere, he resorts to taking a hostage.

I'm convinced Barbossa has genuinely come out of a 1 v XY completely unscathed at some point during his career and everybody feared him ever since.

I love the fact that ostensibly, everyone in pirates of the caribbean is straight (so many of the jokes even rely on it) but in reality we all know that there is not one straight person in that movie. Because in the first movie alone, we have:

Will: the first movie was his bisexual awakening and he spent the entire time torn between whether he wanted to bang Elizabeth or Jack. The real love triangle.

Elizabeth: if she had ever been onscreen with another woman for longer than 30 seconds I fully believe it would've ended in lesbian sex

Jack: literally the most bisexual man to ever walk/stumble the earth

Pintel & Ragetti: gay and married

Norrington: wanted to marry elizabeth to cover up the fact that the person he actually wanted to bang was jack

Barbossa: also wanted to bang Jack. didn't even do a good job of hiding it. might have actually succeeded? they give bitter divorced exes

If Maul really wanted to be an effective mentor he would've taken a page out of Captain Barbossa's book and committed himself to channeling weird uncle vibes instead of just being angry all the time. It worked with Elizabeth and Barbossa wasn't even trying to mentor her, it just happened. And she ended up the literal Pirate King. Basically all of this is to say that Hondo Ohnaka would have more luck training an apprentice than Maul and we have canonical proof that this almost actually happened, in this essay I will -
