ACTION COMICS (vol. 1) #354 (September, 1967). Cover by Curt Swan.
Captain Incredible was a robot from the 27th Century with powers and abilities far beyond Superman's. The robot's creator sent it back in time to be a sidekick/assistant for the Man of Steel. However, time travel scrambled Captain Incredible's programming, and the robot ended up trying to kill Superman.
Captain Incredible was a spoof on a CBS television show at the time called Captain Nice, itself a spoof of the campy superhero craze created by the live-action Batman show.
Captain Nice ran 15 episodes from January to August, 1967. It starred William Daniels who, depending on your age, is better known as Dr. Mark Craig on St. Elsewhere (1982-1988); the voice of supercar K.I.T.T. in Knight Rider (1982-1986); or Mr. Feeny from Boy Meets World (1993-2000).
Captain Nice was no ratings blockbuster (it was up against The Rat Patrol and The Lucy Show in the same time slot), and by mid-1967 the luster had worn off most of the superhero craze brought on by Batmania.
Ironically, the Action Comics issue above was released in July, 1967, just a few short weeks before Captain Nice was cancelled.
