Trudging up the stairs to your third floor apartment had never been so gruelling. It was half your legs and half your head. You’d been on your feet all day at the cafe, all morning and evening. The fact it was swamped all day would’ve been bad enough, but a child throwing up on your shoes and you dropping a tray of 20 cups almost sent you over the edge. The worst part was the burns from the coffee, peppering your hands and forearms. You thought you could hear that same sound of the shatter of the cups in your kneecaps as you put all your concentration into the stairs. Your quiet apartment with your boyfriend – and a lasagne you’d made together – was the only light at the end of the tunnel. Just 6 more stairs, but your headache didn’t let up. It tightened like a rope around your forehead, and the memory of a customer calling you a “stupid little girl”, and getting a fail on your essay yesterday, hit you round the head like a hammer. You gave a long blink and a swallow as you reached the landing, reaching in front of you for the cold door knob.
You opened the door and was immediately affronted with the light of the TV. You brought your hand up to cover your eyes from the pain it induced as you stumbled through the door.
Felix's silhouette was illuminated in front of the blinding light, sat hunched over on the sofa. He was playing what seemed like an intense RPG, but you were in too much pain to focus on what exactly. The controller buttons flicked under his fingers, only stopping to give you a brief smile that you could only just see, before turning back to his game. You gave him a groan of a “hi” as you tried to shy away from the light towards the kitchen.
Your feet burned violently in your hot, almost broken work shoes. Dropping your bag off your shoulder by the kitchen counter was a necessity, but the crack you heard come from the bag… you quite frankly didn’t want to know. You just looked at your slumped bag like a disappointed parent and rolled your eyes before shifting to the fridge. All you could hear was the distant but fading sound of the game and Felix’s fingers on the controller.
You tugged at the fridge door. Once, twice. It didn’t feel obstructed by anything, more like it was just sticking. You wondered if you’d lost all strength in your arm during the day as you looked at your red burned hand tugging at the door handle. But one last pull sent it flying open. It ricocheted off its hinges, but the real concern was the white dish on the top shelf, which came flying off towards you. You instinctively flinched your hands in front of your face, but the dish fell as soon as it met the open air. It hit a pint of milk that was fitted in the fridge door, which went colliding to the floor too. In a fight or flight, you shifted your feet away, and thankfully the dish missed your foot. But the sound of the lasagne dish shattering on the floor and the pint of milk splitting, and covering the floor, was enough pain to your ears.
You couldn’t believe it. You stood for a second, hands over your ears, and one leg up by your side safely out of the way. Your eyes scanned the floor to see sauce splattered all up the cupboards and across the floor, the milk sinking into the crevices in the kitchen floor. A fire built in your chest, and you could feel all the nerves in your body tense. They erupted in tandem as you screamed and sank into a squat, covering your already teary eyes. Your scream was frustration for only a moment before it died into a wail of despair.
The sound of Felix’s voice, and the clattering of the controller falling to the ground, was only faint in your ears as they were still ringing. His hurried steps were clearer as they got closer. He paused for a moment as he rounded the kitchen counter and stared at you in shock.
“Oh no no no, are you alright? You’re not harmed are you?”
He immediately crouched down next to you, wrapping his arms around your shoulders to give them a rub. You just kept your hand covering your face as even more tears pricked your eyes. After a second, he gently placed his fingers on your wrists and looked around to check you weren’t bleeding. After shifting the broken pieces gently out of the way and being satisfied by the fact you weren’t bleeding, he started to give a gentle rub of your knee in circular motions. Even if you were bleeding, you were so beaten from today you doubted you’d be able to feel it.
You just sobbed louder. Your knees and ankles tremored under the weight of your body but you couldn’t do anything but cry into your hands, shading your face. His eyes went wide and his brow turned distraught. He threw his arms around you and hugged your shoulders tight, patting your head gently with his right hand.
“Sshhh, it’s going to be ok, I’m here”, he said in a deeper tone that you could feel manifest up from his chest.
He gave you all the time you needed to just crouch there on the floor, hugging you and rubbing your shoulders, resting his cheek on your head and occasionally giving you kisses there, in response to your louder sobs. After a few minutes, he started speaking in a quiet tone.
“Did something happen today, Angel?”
You just sniffled, clawing at your face. Where could you even begin. Actually, this was all stupid and now there was broken shit and a whole mess all over the floor. You mentally collapsed, beating yourself up for making both a big deal out of nothing and a disaster in the kitchen, and started to cry harder.
“Oh darling, you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to”
His fingers clawed gently at your own, trying to open up to your face but you didn’t want to shift. You shut your trembling mouth shut and tried to dry your tears the best you could. It had been way too long and you thought you should’ve been old enough not to cry like this.
“Hey”, he started in a deep tone, after giving you another silent moment to collect yourself.
“Let's get you showered and changed out of these clothes, and we can do whatever's best for you, okay?”
He lightly pinched your wrists and they gave in. He immediately took your hands in his own, massaging his thumbs around them, and tried to catch your eye with a wide smile. You eventually glanced back at him, lip still trembling and brow quivering. Your face didn’t show it, but just the sight of his bright eyes and smile made you feel just a little better.
Once you got out of the shower, you saw the comfy shorts and one of Felix’s own oversized graphic tees laid out neatly on the bed for you to change into. He’d basically walked you to the shower, rubbing your hands as you sniffled. He offered to help you in the shower but you told him you could just about handle it, and he cupped your face and kissed your cheek before you locked yourself in the bathroom. A hot shower was really what you needed. You tried avoiding the water scalding your burns from the morning, but apart from that it was like a massage to your tense muscles, up and down your body. Your legs still trembled a bit as you left the shower and went to change. He knew what would comfort you the most, and his shirt smelled just like him. The sound of Felix flicking through the TV echoed through the door into the room.
You gave a deep breath before opening the door to the lounge. Felix turned to you immediately and dropped the remote on the arm of the couch.
“Hey, how’s my Princess”, he said in a calming whisper, eyes wide again. Something about the way he looked and how he cared made your eyes prick again.
You nodded faintly with your arms crossed, eyes avoiding all eye contact as he approached you. He read you like a book, and took your hands in his own, kneeling down to catch your eye. He looked up at you with his huge brown eyes, but after a moment of silence, he realised he wasn’t going to get an answer there and then.
“Would cuddles make you feel a bit better?”, he asked in a quiet contemplation, trying to gauge what you wanted. You gave him a short nod, and he responded with a bright smile as his eyes turned to crescents.
You laid half on the couch, half on top of him. You nestled your slightly-less aching head in his chest, and his fingers circled around your ear like he could physically sense your headache. Somehow, they knew exactly where your sensitive parts were. After an eternity of silence and being warmed from the closeness of his body, you plucked up the courage to start speaking with a heave of air into your lungs.
“It was way too much today, Lixie”.
You gradually detailed all the events of the day that had almost made you lose your mind, from the man to the child, before the calamitous fridge incident that did. The whole time, he just traced his finger round your ear and hummed occasionally to let you know he was listening. You could feel the hum on your cheek as it rippled from his chest. After several seconds of silence, your signal that you’d finished everything, he patted your head slowly and rhythmically. Speaking about it had helped a little, but your stomach was still sunk and nerves on their ends.
“I’m sorry for being so stupid”, you muttered, barely intelligible. Your ear-shattering scream rang in your memory and you clamped your eyes shut in embarrassment.
“Hey”, he replied, rubbing your shoulder, “you should never apologise”
You just buried your head further into his chest, clinging onto his body.
“Angel, look at me”, he continued more seriously, lifting your torso a little. You shifted along with his movements and ended up laid wholly on top of him. You tried to avoid eye contact again, still too embarrassed, but he enveloped his warm and soft hands around your cheeks, bringing your eyes to each other’s naturally. He rubbed your cheeks lightly with his thumbs as he spoke.
“None of this was your fault ok? You’ve had a really rough day and I’m sorry you had to go through all that… you just reached a tipping point and that’s ok”
You gave a very slight smile, seeing the sincerity and warmness in his eyes.
You allowed yourself a slightly wider smile and scratched your forehead with your hand, which immediately caught his eye.
“Is this the hand you burned?”, he started in a high tone, taking your hand and studying every follicle.
You gave a short nod as a yes. He pressed his lips together in an empathetic expression, and brought your hand up to kiss the burns several times over. It wasn’t really the ice that you really needed, but it still left a tingling sensation. The bigger impact was how it made your heart flutter, your body no longer feeling so dead and distraught.
“Let me make you something tasty to eat and maybe we can watch a shitty movie”, he thought out loud, tucking a lock of hair around your ear and looking at you like you were the most precious thing in the world
“Does that sound ok to you, Princess?”
You looked into his eyes properly now, shining in the light of the TV. His freckles were like specks of artistry spanning from his ears, to his cheeks and sitting on his nose. You gave him a wide smile.
“Yes, thank you Sunshine”
“I love you, okay?”, he said, already getting up, and leaving a brief, warming kiss on your lips as he laid you down on the couch and moved to the kitchen.
It was just some soup and a grilled cheese, but it was like he’d read your mind. You just laid lifelessly on the couch, zoning out into the light of the TV, as he pottered around in the kitchen. It wasn’t long before he brought it over with a cute noise erupting out of his mouth to get your attention. You happily sat up and he placed the tray gently on your knee. You smiled lightly as the steam hit your cold face, the scent of dried tomatoes, red pepper and lentils reaching your nose immediately. He sat quickly beside you, raising the spoon up which you took from his fingers. He tucked your hair behind your ear and placed a soft kiss on your cheek.
“You enjoy that, alright?”
You gave a short giggle before taking a tentative sip of the steaming hot soup, the bowl warming your knees through the tray.
“And don’t think about anything else”
Felix reached his arms around your shoulders to hold you in a half-hug as he flipped through the channels.
By the time you were finished you were perfectly full.
You gave a short nod and nestled your head into his chest as he grinned at you in response. He leaned back so you were laying on top of him, and reached for the blanket resting on the back of the sofa, unfurling it to cover you both. He put on something easy to watch, but even then you weren’t really paying attention. It was just nice to have something to take your mind off the day and wind your mind down. He periodically gave you gentle kisses on your head and forehead, and played with your fingers, tracing their lines. It was indescribable how the graze of his touch could rebuild just a little bit of your morale, piece by piece. Once you’d fully sunk into him, growing a little tired, his hand ran under the blankets, and tentatively and slowly under your shirt. His fingers only reached your lower stomach, where he started to rub light circles.
“Does this make you feel–”, he tried to ask, but you were already nodding in response.
With the warmth of him beneath you, and feeling the calm traces of his touch, you could finally feel the stress and anxiety leave your chest and shoulders.
You didn’t know how long had passed, but the film was still flickering vague light in front of your eyelids. Your consciousness clocked back in at the feeling of a tender pat of your head. After a few more seconds, he hugged you tighter and brought his lips to your ear.
“It's getting late, should I get us some hot cocoa or something?”, he whispered deeply. He must have known that tone wouldn’t have disturbed you, and if anything it made you slightly more drowsy. His nose rubbed against the side of your head.
You sank further into his chest, “sounds good”, you managed to croak out.
But as he started shifting, moving his left leg off the couch, and vanishing the warmth beneath you, you realised the consequences of your own words. You grasped onto the bottom of his shirt with both your hands, and he turned around to look at you with a grin.
“Wait please don’t go”, you whined
He chuckled before crouching down to your eye level, “I’ll be less than 5 minutes, I promise”, he said whilst curling your hair in his fingers.
He was so pretty this close up. You gave an exaggerated pout of your bottom lip, and let him off when he mimicked you with wide eyes.
“Extra cream and marshmallows on top for my sweetest Princess?”, he asked, but leaned in to brush his lips across yours before you could answer, tilting your chin with his thumb and index finger. Then with a double tap of the arm of the couch, he got up and left for the kitchen.
You felt an embarrassing level of loneliness without being attached to him at all times, it felt like your soul was depleted. But he was right, and it was only 3 minutes before he returned. He slowly treaded towards you, watching the two towering mugs in his hands with eagle eyes. His focus was well-warranted, but you couldn’t help but think his focused eyes and small frown was the cutest thing ever. He gave a short huff at your expression as he got closer, and propped the mugs on the small table on his side of the couch. Sitting down with a sigh, he immediately resumed his arm around your shoulder and reached for one of the mugs.
“Be careful okay”, he started, raising the mug to your lips where you took it from him, “if I end up responsible for any more burns I won’t forgive myself”
You launched a kiss at his cheek which took him entirely by surprise, before sinking back into your seat and raising your knees to your chest. He’d created a perfect spiral mountain of cream and distributed the marshmallows all evenly across it. His looked a little worse for wear. You tried to take a sip from the lip of the cup but there was no way around it without submerging your nose in the cream. It was perfectly hot and not too scalding, thankfully, but as soon as you finished your first swallow, you caught his face in your peripheral vision. He was looking at something, and you thought for a second your hair could’ve been a mess from rubbing it against his chest the last few hours. Your self-consciousness clarified itself when he took his pinky finger and brushed it gently over the tip of your nose. The unexpected touch to your face startled you a little, but as you turned to see his face, he was just grinning mischievously. He sucked hard on his pinky finger, making it pop as he finished, and shot you a wink as he sat back. All you could do was make a sarcastic annoyed face at him.
Your cocoa was only half-finished before you grew too weary. You ended up giving in and plummeting it on the table in front of you before leaning over to curl up on the couch. You rested your head into his lap and shut your eyes as he brought his hand to stroke your head.
“I hope you’re feeling better, Angel”
“I am Sunshine, I love you so much”
The sensation of his soft and gentle fingers around your ear and across your cheek was almost enough to send you to sleep. You had no idea what was going on on the TV or what time it was, all you did know was the touch of his hand and the tingling that grew and spiralled around your head.
Your state of deep drowsiness was soon – too soon – interrupted by a void in your ears. Something shifted, and for the first few moments you couldn’t tell what. You certainly weren’t going to open your eyes, but after so long, you realised it must have been the sound of the TV turning off. After another few seconds of silence, a distant chime of two cups hitting each other echoed into your ears. It was only then that you realised you couldn’t feel his lap anymore. It was warm, but it felt far more hollow. And then on the other side of your head, you couldn’t feel his hands either. Your face turned into a disgruntled frown immediately and you huffed through your nose, eyes still clamped shut. Any amount of light would’ve been a violation to your eyes.
It wasn’t long before you heard footsteps creak back. Felix was mostly silent, and it was only the faint ruffle of his clothes that you could sense, rather than hear. The thing that gave him away was the squeak of the floorboards. You felt a faint waft of air in front of your face, before a more noticeable sigh. He very briefly brushed his pursed lips across your cheek before reaching one arm under your legs and another round the top of your back. In a swift movement, he raised you up entirely in his arms, and without your help at all. You shifted a little in his hold and gave him a tiny grunt in response, still mostly unable to form any words. You heard something else faintly, and you thought he might have laughed out his nose or something in response to your small struggle. You just laid there curled up in his arms, and he gave you another soft peck on the red, cold tip of your nose before slowly making his way over to your bedroom.
He kicked the door gently open with his foot and went to lay you down in bed. He knelt down in the motion and you were reluctant to let go of even an inch of him. He must have pulled back the covers before bringing you in, as he quickly engulfed your whole body with a blanket less than 2 seconds after having laid you down. You gave a short huff and managed to grab one of his hands, tracing the lines around his fingers in both of your hands, still refusing to let go. He only responded by shifting your hair out your face with his other hand. You dragged your eyes open with all the energy you had, tiredness still beating you, just so you could see him crouched there.
“I love you… my angelie”, he said in the deepest and smoothest tone you’d heard from him, it almost sent a shock through your body. Maybe he had taken a short nap too. You uttered it back to him, with what you had hoped was a bit more fervour, but your voice was only half working. It ended up being an unintelligible mess, but the restrained laugh he let out told you he’d understood it.
You just looked into each other’s eyes for a few more moments, or what you could visually make out in the dark of the room. You saw his face get a little closer, and as he fitted his lips perfectly between your own, you pressed yours back into his. He momentarily gave a flick of his tongue against yours which you treasured for as long as you could.
“You taste so sweet”, he chuckled in your ear as he pulled away, and all you could do was smile.
He went to press one last brief kiss against your lips, which were still slightly parted.
“And I’m glad you’re feeling better”
“Well that’s all because of you”, you responded, actually audibly this time, “on both accounts”
You let your eyes lull shut again, but after a few moments, you felt his hand move slightly. Get slightly higher up. Working in tandem with a shift you heard from the floor. And then a soft pull. You gripped onto his fingers for dear life and gave a whine, knotting your brow. He hesitated and stopped for a second at the feeling.
“Sorry Princess, I need to wash–”
“Stay with me”, you interrupted in a tired groan.
“I won’t be two minutes, Angel”, he replied a little belatedly. His voice was a lot closer, and you could sense his breath a little on your face.
“Please Sunshine…”, you moaned again. You were a little embarrassed at how clingy you sounded, but your mind barely had the capacity to filter that out right now.
He gave a sigh through his nose and gently patted your head twice, brushing your hair in the motion.
“Okay, I’ll stay here for a bit, but just for you”
A smile creaked across your lips. Felix made his way round the other side of the bed and laid behind you, arms wrapped round your stomach with his chin nestled in the base of your neck. After a second, he lifted his chin up to give that same spot in your neck a small kiss, before you completely fell asleep.
