Kurt Vile at the Crystal Ballroom

When Kurt Vile took the stage at the Crystal Ballroom, not gonna lie, he had a few obstacles going against him. For one, the somewhat lifeless crowd (seriously, I felt like the crowd was made up solely of the friend you bring along to the concert who doesn’t really know the band, but just came along because they had nothing else to do, but they’re lame and don’t really make any real effort to get into the music). Not to mention the all too audible thumb of the bass playing at the “90’s dance party” downstairs. But none of that could detract from Vile’s performance. 

The show was beautiful. Vile and his band the Violators don’t need flashy costumes, light shows, or crazy stage antics to put on a great rock show. Stripped of any gimmicky distractions, Vile’s performance was an excellent showcase of his talent as both a songwriter and a musician. At times his delivery was aggressive; he’d let out this great rock n’ roll yelling voice that I had never noticed in his recorded work. At other moments, his delivery was intimate and sensitive with him coyly retreating behind his curtain of hair. In these instances, Vile’s artistry was best showcased. There was a great portion of the concert where it was just Vile and a guitar on stage, and the back lighting on stage reflected in his mane of long curly hair, giving it the appearance of a halo. 

Perhaps the only excesses of Vile’s performance were his countless guitar changes. Kurt Vile really does seem to love his guitars, but I appreciate the way he seems to perform his songs as duets between his voice and his guitar, one never overpowers the other for long. With his guitar-centric rock style, classic, simple delivery, and faint blue-grass undertones, Kurt Vile conjures up comparisons to greats like Tom Petty or Neil Young. His performance is soothing and familiar, but at the same time captivating because he and his band are just such good musicians. At the Crystal, Vile announced that it would be his last show for a while. One can only hope this means we can expect a new record from him in the near future.
