Initial Ideas Presentation - Visual Communication in Context 2 - Intervention + Interpretation Project
Before this presentation I had to produce an A2 poster and a carousel post on Instagram that would demonstrate my ability to promote my typeface within the appropriate nature. To do this I had to consider the key components of my typeface, taking into consideration of how my letters will interact with each other. In this instance, I decided to go for an industrial theme for both outcomes. Initially I looked at my typeface and I thought it would be appropriate to choose this idea because the limited shapes and the connection between the letters reminded me of pipes and how they are designed to flow in a certain direction. Therefore I have designed a simple background so that the typeface was still the main focus point of the A2 poster since this was a typography project. Adding to that, I wanted to demonstrate other components relating to how a typeface is formed and laid out. So I designed more letters to create the words ‘x-height, cap-height, and baseline’ in a smaller sized font.
Designing a carousel post was set out for this project as a way of applying a piece of work in a context that may be considered promotional. Sticking with the industrial theme, I decided to explore different letters to form, and I gave my typeface the name ‘pipeline’. On Adobe Illustrator I drew some lightbulbs and some water drops to apply a visual aspect to my typography.
In regards to my feedback from my tutors and course mates, I received a balanced amount:
1. I needed to play around with connecting the letters with each other in different ways.
2. The little illustrations were unnecessary.
3. Think about the promotional nature of the poster. How would it look in a public space as well as on social media.
4. Don’t overwhelm the narrative of the typeface.
