Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Frogs and Cranberries, it must be fall! One of the most common frogs found in flooded cranberry bogs is the carpenter frog; though their drab coloring makes them easily camouflaged, they can often be heard via their distinctive 'hammering' call, which also gives the carpenter frog its name.

The carpenter frog [Rana virgatipes] is named for their repetitive, hammer-like call. They can not make you a bookshelf. However, we can still admire their beautiful bronze coloration, and their remarkable tolerance for acidity. They are frequently found in sphagnum bogs and other water sources with exceptionally high acidity. Their brown coloration allows them to blend in with the tea-colored water of their acidic environment. Images by James H. Harding, John White, and Stephen Bennett.
Having to move things that might be blown around or damaged by the hurricane isn’t fun... but on the bright side, I also got to relocate some carpenter frogs that were living under a mermaid statue! As is tradition, any animal that I make contact with must be documented.

There was a little carpenter frog in the pool when I went for a swim yesterday. Before putting it somewhere less... chlorinated, I wanted to shoot some video of it without stressing it out too much, so put it on my NES controller float. As it turns out, when in direct sunlight that thing gets very hot very quickly. I was giving the poor frog a hot foot the entire time, hence the mad hopping. Oops.
