(P.S. The title for episode 60 is easily the translation I'm most proud of in this whole dang project. The French title is a XANA monster-fied pun on "avoir une araignée au plafond" which means, literally, "to have a spider on the ceiling"—that is, being insane. The English dub dropped the idiomatic aspect, which made finding an equivalent myself all the sweeter...)

SmashGenesis: Man, Apollo straight up took one look at this scrawny svelte little bisexual last episode and said, "You can have the gift of prophecy. As a treat."

And now, here's the season 3 premiere! Fun fact: in the Engish dub, this is the only episode that translated "le cœur de Lyoko" as the Heart of Lyoko. "Cœur" can also mean core, but given the way it's portrayed in the show, we chose to render it as the Heart in English.

Season 2, Episode 23

aka The Fault In Our Scanners

SmashGenesis: Watching this episode as an adult, it really strikes me what a loving father Jérémie has. Kid asked his father to drive a whole day to come get him out of the blue, then told him, "Nah, I'm good, actually." Mr. Belpois is probably just happy that his son has finally made some friends, but that's still gotta be a TON of gas money down the drain. On to the episode, and expect the rest of the season soon! It's all translated and edited; as soon as Victor has the video files for us, we'll post them!

Progress Update!

SmashGenesis: Good news, everyone. As of this evening, we have finished translating every episode in season 2! Hooray! Now, this doesn't necessarily mean we're going to be posting more frequently. We still need to check our translations, proofread, and prepare the video files so I can run them through VidCoder before uploading anything. That said, it is an important milestone, so rest assured: we are still making progress.

Keep an eye on our tumblr, everyone. Unless, of course, you'd rather not talk about it... ;)

Thank You For Everything

SmashGenesis: First, we want to express our immense gratitude to you all for your support these past few years. I know how much you all have enjoyed looking forward to our subtitles. Unfortunately, despite our passion for Code Lyoko, sometimes, life takes you in a different direction. We love this crazy show with big foreheads and bigger hormonal swings, but not enough to painstakingly subtitle it episode by episode for free anymore.

Today marks the end of Carthage Subbing's journey with Code Lyoko.

We know. We're sorry we weren't able to finish season 2. But fear not! This post isn't all bad news.

As many of you may know, there's another anime-inspired, French cartoon that doesn't have any official English subtitles for its French audio track. In fact, you're more likely to know it than you are Code Lyoko!

That's right! We're switching focus to subtitle Miraculous: Les aventures de Ladybug et Chat Noir, more commonly known as Miraculous Ladybug!

I'm sure this is a decision that will take some time to get used to. But really, who needs 2-decade old cartoons with their cheap animation? Now we can focus on the shiny, modern tribulations of Marinette, Adrien and all their superhero friends. Below are links to our subtitled versions of Origins: Ladybug and Chat Noir and Origins: Stoneheart. Please excuse our outdated Code Lyoko tumblr theme. We'll switch to a more miraculous one soon.

SmashGenesis: Here's episode 42, translated by ruth1994, translation checked by Flo and proofread by wacko and yours truly! (Mostly wacko, though.) Fun fact, Odd's pun about sushi and worrying shows up a few more times over the course of the series, and we've been dreading coming up with a way to translate it. We still kinda are, since the translation we used here won't really work in the other contexts the pun is used in. Wish us luck, and please send plenty of soy sauce.

SmashGenesis: Dated internet references aside, here's our next release! The official dub called this episode A Bad Turn, which does preserve the French title's driving pun, but fails to incorporate how Mauvaise conduite can also talk about bad behavior. If you've already seen this episode, you know exactly what I'm talking about. ;)

On a related topic, I'd like to give a big thanks to Carthage Subbing's newest member, Flo, for checking my translation of this episode. Having a native French on the team speaker is definitely going to be a big help! Season 2, Episode 3

aka The Noodle Episode

SmashGenesis: Okay, listen. I know this show is 20 years old. I know all the discourse has been played out ad nauseum in every geeky corner of the web. But you know? Sometimes, you just need to say the quiet thing out loud, not because it hasn't been said before, but because it needs to be said again. That's right, it's time to address the real elephant in the abandoned factory here:

Yumi's mom's home cooking.

Seriously. Look at that. It's just a bowl of plain noodles! Where's the veggies? The sauce? The meat? What kind of self-respecting person feeds this to anyone, let alone their own daughter!!

And, as AdPro, the ever-talented translator of this episode helpfully pointed out to me over Discord, the Ishiyama matriarch's culinary catastrophe isn't the only instance of noodles in this episode. Just as Odd mentions the cafeteria is serving spaghetti, we can't forghetti our tentacular friend, XANA's very own Jellyfish! Those tentacles look an awful lot like noodles, don't they???? It's a conspiracy! A conspiracy, I tell you!
