“I will never understand you humans and knowing how to use all of this technology” it was currently late at night in the bunker, Sam and Dean had long ago gone to bed in preparation for the next days hunt, You and Castiel however decided to stay awake in order to get in as much research as you both possibly could before you all set off in the morning. It was becoming more and more clear that you were getting along much better than your winged friend was.
“You're not even on the search bar Cas” you stated trying your very hardest not to laugh at the angel’s struggles. You would have thought that angels would already know how to do everything before they got down here, them being all knowing beings and all but that has proved to be far from the truth as you watched on as Cas hap haphazardly started typing single letters on the keyboard not understanding how it wasn’t knowing what he wanted it to do.
“Here let me help”, you started getting closer to Cas scooting in next to him and leaning in a little more than necessary just to be that much closer to the angel. “This is how you use it, see?” you stated looking over at him, though due to your height difference you were more likely looking up at him even though you were both sat next to each other. As you looked over towards Cas however you saw that his focus was not on what you were showing him on the computer but instead focused on your face the entire time.
You don’t know whether it was the close proximity you both shared or the love sick face that he had as he stared into your eyes but in this moment you were so thankful of your decision to sit just that bit closer.
You both sat there in a comfortable silence staring at one another as Cas closed the gap between the two of you and kissed you with such intensity it quite literally took your breath away. “Who needs to understand technology when I have the smartest person in the world?” That statement was far from the truth, you weren't the smartest but to Cas he fully meant it and just knowing that fact made you feel so loved and appreciated that you fell more in love with the angel, if that was even possible.

Title: Grateful
Y/n looks up from her laptop when Dean and Sam arrive home, walking into the house with huge grins on their faces. They hold up the bags of the rest of the supplies Mary needs to finish cooking dinner. Dean sets his bag by the door and runs over to the couch, sitting down next to her. Sam sighs, his eyes rolling skywards as he bends down to pick up Dean’s discarded bags, and then heads to the kitchen. Y/n looks up again and nods towards the door. Dean looks up and frowns. “Castiel, get in here.” Dean’s friend stands shyly outside the apartment, ducking his head as he walks through the door, shutting and deadbolting it behind him.
He takes his shoes off and leaves them by the door before sitting on the other side of the couch, next to Y/n. “Hi, y/n/n.” She looks up, a brief smile crossing her face as she waves, and then turns back to her laptop. Dean rolls his eyes at his sister and leans back on the couch.
“You don’t have to be so awkward, Cas.” Castiel seems to stiffen at that, his head turning down slightly.
“I didn’t realize I was…” His voice trails off, and y/n elbows Dean in the ribs roughly, turning to give him a glare. Dean grimaces and rubs his side.
“Okay, whatever.” He stands up. “I’m gonna be in the kitchen. Helping mom, like you should be.” He pokes y/n quickly before leaping away from her arm that swings out, although not fast enough as she grabs a fistful of his shirt and yanks, effectively bringing him to the ground with a loud thud. “Hey, what the hell y/n-” Dean’s voice stays low, but a loud thud sounds from the apartment below.
“Quit stomping around up there!” A gruff voice calls.
Dean stomps multiple times before glaring at the floor and muttering a quiet “Screw you.” Y/n rolls her eyes, and types quickly on her computer. Dean glances over.
“Don’t be a dick.” The electronic voice startles Castiel and Dean glares at his sister as she beams up at him. Castiel’s gaze falls on her computer screen, the words shining out at the world. Castiel tilts his head and turns to her as she chucks a pillow at Dean, urging him to leave the room.
“How have you been, y/n?” She looks over at him, and smiles, holding her thumbs up and then pointing to him, raising her eyebrows as she turns back to her computer, minimizing her current tab and going back to browsing.
“O-oh, I’ve been okay, I guess.” He pauses and breathes in deeply. “I hope it’s okay that I’m here- I mean, Thanksgiving is for family, and…well, I’m not family.” Castiel looks away. “Not anyone’s.” Y/n looks over at him, and sighs before clicking back to the previous tab and typing quickly.
“We’re happy to have you, Cas. You’re allowed to be here.” He smiles softly at her.
“Thank you, y/n.” He pauses before laughing softly. “Here I am, thanking you on Thanksgiving…” He pauses and looks away. “I have a lot to thank you for, if I’m being honest.” Y/n looks over at him questioningly. He sighs, turning his gaze from hers. “You’re very important to me, y/n/n.” His gaze stays fixed on his hands resting in his lap. “You know that, right?” He can see her nodding from the corner of his eyes and he sighs again. “I don’t think I really have a choice anymore,” he says. Y/n’s face twists in confusion and she begins to type.
“Dean, I already told you, get out! I’m trying to cook!” Mary’s voice rises to an angry shout.
“I’m helping!”
“No, you’re eating.” Sam snickers, a loud crash following his laughter. Several more crashes come from the kitchen before Sam darts past the small living room, his foot catching on a decorative rug as he falls down, only for Dean to quickly land on top of him, pinning his brother down.
“Shut up, Sammy!” He growls, lightly punching him.
“Boys! Stop fighting right now!” Dean gets off his brother and Sam scrambles to his feet, glaring at his brother as he walks back into the kitchen to continue helping their mother. Dean rolls his eyes, and plops back down onto the couch, only to pout when y/n elbows him again.
“I got kicked out of the kitchen and even you won’t accept me?” He looks away and huffs, standing up. “Fine. I’ll go,” Y/n rolls her eyes. “I’ll be in my room if anyone decides they want me in this house,” Dean shouts sarcastically, earning another soft thud on their floor, and another muffled request for silence.
Dean stomps and earns another soft thud in response. “Oh, put your broom down already!” He shouts, looking up and raising his eyebrows at Castiel. “I assume you’re staying there?” Castiel nods.
“I just have something I need to say, and then I’ll be over.” Dean nods, his face lighting up.
“You got this buddy.” He gives his friend a thumbs up before backing out of the room, leaving the two alone once again. Castiel scratches the back of his neck and sighs.
“I want you to know…you’re uh, really important to me.” Y/n smiles at him and nods. “And…I mean, I’ve known you for a long time.” Y/n nods again. “And…I mean, at first, I thought maybe…maybe I felt like…I don’t know, you were- a sister? But…” Y/n frowns, her heart picking up. “I think…y/n,” he turns to her fully, and takes her hands in his. “I think I’m very grateful…” he pauses, his eyebrows furrowing. “…to have fallen in love with you.” Y/n’s mouth drops open, her eyes bugging out slightly. He looks away. “You…uh, do you…feel the same, or should I leave?” She smiles brightly, and types faster than she ever has before.
“I love you too Castiel.” The electronic voice brings relief to Castiel, and he grins brightly, ducking closer to her.
“So…could I…” She laughs, placing a quick kiss on his lips before turning back to her computer.
“You should head over to Dean before he gets angry.” Castiel nods, and pauses, grabbing her face to kiss her once more before heading over to Dean’s room.

A/N: Fic request by @captainblurryface21 – “Could I please request an angst-y and fluffy one-shot based from the song Dream by Imagine Dragons??” I’ll let the song lyrics serve as summary – “We all are living in a dream, /But life ain't what it seems /Oh everything's a mess /And all these sorrows I have seen /They lead me to believe /That everything's a mess /But I wanna dream /I wanna dream /Leave me to dream.” Fluff, and angst.
A deceptively warm autumn breeze caressed your cheeks, rustling the limbs of the ruddy-mantled maple you reclined against. A cascade of bright red and orange speckled leaves noisily shook free, fluttering from their quivering branches to tumble exuberantly across the yellowing grasses, amassing together in scattered heaps here and there on the unnaturally flat park grounds as though by some predetermined agreed-upon plan to rejoin ranks after escaping their stemmed restraints upon the tree. Perhaps they were simply lonely in their freedom. You scented in the swirling air drifting from a meadow beyond the manicured fields a mixture of fragrant sun-warmed late-blooming aster and the sickly sweet odor of newly fallen apples, bruised and rusting flesh half-consumed in the dawn by deer and other furtive wandering night creatures. Twisting a single dark lock of curly hair around your finger over and over again, you contemplated, between turns of the page as you read, the peaceful countenance of the angel with his head resting upon your lap. Smiling to yourself, it occurred to you that very rarely was the real world this idyllic.
He did not stir, though every so often his expression would tense with vague unease, a subtle swell of terror suddenly snatching at his frame, the disquiet quickly calmed by the renewed and reassuring ministrations of your fingers softly stroking his hair and face. Castiel didn’t sleep, but lately he would routinely pass hours in repose with you in this manner, eyes sealed in reclusive thought.
Observing him, a fretful deep line began to coax his brow into an anxious furrow. Smoothing your fingertips lightly across his forehead, your touch quelled the surge of agitation menacing his serenity. Forgetting your book, surrendering to a cloistered curiosity regarding the source of the torment in his quietude on this sublimely perfect afternoon, you swept your knuckles across his prickly cheek and neck, settling your palm to his shallowly rising and falling chest. The slowing beat of his vessel’s heart thrummed beneath your fingertips. Leaning down, your lips and exhaling breath brushed a tenderly heated kiss over each of his eyelids in turn. “Angel, what are you thinking about?” you whispered against the delicate skin, his lashes tickling your lips.
His luminous multi-hued blues flickered open, faraway focus resolving in a blink upon your inquisitive regard. “Nothing,” he professed mechanically, adding in a guilty low tone after a brief reflective pause, “everything.”
The involuntary gentleness of your smile at the expansive scope of his answer did little to disguise the concern otherwise clouding your aspect.
Plainly discerning the familiar concern flitting across your features, he reached up to cover your hand warmly with his own, “You needn’t worry about me.”
“Don’t I though?” you asserted, repositioning your hand to twine your fingers loosely through his. “You know you can talk to me about anything, don’t you?”
His eyes dimmed distantly. The now rising wind fiercely shook the boughs above; whipping tendrils of air rekindled the rain of brightly blushing leaves around you and the angel. The faint crunch of crisp leaf on leaf as they toppled and spun in their colorful seasonal dance filled the unanswered silence.
You squeezed his hand to draw him back to you, to wrench him from whatever painful past recollection vexed his mind and threatened to tear him away from you, “I mean it Castiel, anything. I’m here for you. Let me help.”
A deep sigh collapsed his ribcage. He nodded, returning to the present with a heavy blink. “I know, and you already do,” a sad smile traced his mouth, fingers folding firmly around yours in return. “You already do more than you know. So much more than I deserve.”
“Don’t say that,” you scoffed, pressing an inflexible scolding kiss to his lips. “You deserve to be loved. And I love you, more than you seem to know.”
He closed his eyes, allowing your words, the kindness illumining your soul, and the adamant smattering of affectionate kisses to his face and neck attesting to your unyielding devotion to soothe him.
“Tell me, my sweet angel,” your lips relented their doting assault, fingers again burying in his thick shock of hair to massage his scalp. “What’s bothering you?”
A groan vibrated his throat – in part born from the pleasantness of your touch, and partly in weary acquiescence to your stubborn concern. “Every step I take, every righteous plan, every virtuous intention, every life I touch…no matter what I do, it all ends up a mess,” he spoke without looking at you, sheltered behind the darkness of his shuttered eyes. “Or worse.”
“That’s not true,” you tugged his locks emphatically until he opened his eyes to peer sullenly at you. “You help people Cas. You help save the world. You have a purpose. A family you selflessly protect with your life. You…”
“And I’ve hurt plenty of people too, innocent people,” he interrupted, frowning. “I’ve nearly destroyed the world in vain pride and all but ruined Heaven with my vanity. I’m an outcast amongst my kin. How many times have I selfishly put Sam and Dean’s lives at risk? And you, the most precious thing to me in all of creation,” his voice strained tearfully, leaden with remorse, “I couldn’t even hold on to you when it mattered most.”
You shook your head as he spoke, “You still have me, angel. You will always have me.”
“You and I both know it wasn’t supposed to be this way,” eyes gleaming wetly, he sat up. Facing away from you so you would not see his tears, he hunched forward to awkwardly hug his legs.
Shifting to your knees, you moved to lay your head upon his shoulder. Wrapping your arms snugly about his torso, you murmured softly in his ear, “Castiel, I was always going to die. It’s what humans do. Hunters a lot sooner than the general population in my experience. Stop blaming yourself. We’ve gone over this, there is nothing you could have done to prevent it.”
Regardless of this fact, he still carried the burden of your death – the weight of it and the world hoisted upon his shoulders. Shuddering in your embrace, a choked sob caught in his throat.
You kissed and nuzzled his neck, continuing your optimistic reflection, “In a lot of ways, it’s better up here. That coffee shop downtown never screws up my order anymore. It’s perpetually sunny when I feel like taking a walk outside. I can pile on all the comfy blankets I want in bed and never break a sweat. The library always has the book I’m looking for, and it’s not God-forsaken research about some damned monster or other. It’s like a never-ending dream.”
“You don’t have to do that,” his gravelly tone cracked.
“Do what?”
“Pretend everything is okay for my sake. Everything’s a mess.”
“But everything is okay, Cas. You’re here with me.” Rolling onto your seat, you encouraged him with a steady pull of his shoulder to rest his head again upon your lap.
He submitted to your gentle request.
Wiping the tears from his cheeks with your thumbs, you combed your fingers comfortingly through his hair until he closed his anxious red-rimmed eyes. His troubled expression sank further into the depths of peace with each caress. Careful not to disturb him, you picked up your book and found the page you’d left off on.
Lost in your dream, your Heaven, he forgot again, if only for the moment, the sorrows that haunted him.
Warnings: none... Cas still doesn't know yet, but something might happen sooner than you think...
Summary: Something inside of you clicks after your mother made a simple statement... How have you not realized how far gone you've been? Not only that, but is Cas acting a little... different with you?
“Hey Mama, we’re here,” you called out as you walked in the door, Cas following behind. You waited and slid your hand into his nonchalantly as the two of you shuffled down the hall, missing the stare he gave at your entwined fingers.
“In here,” she raised. You followed her voice into her sewing room, her hands at work with the machine. She glanced up as the two of you entered and she couldn’t help but smile wide.
“Good morning,” she gave, moving her gaze between you and Cas; deftly noticing your interlocked hands. After finishing her last stitch, she stood to hug you both; holding you a bit longer than what would be perceived as a standard hug.
“Are you hungry?” she quizzed, wondering if you had the most important meal of the day.
“We ate at the hotel. I didn’t want you to have to cook for us,” you explain, smiling when you saw her pass you a quick scowl.
“Once upon a time I would have praised you for that. But you’re never here, I miss cooking for you. Cas, you’re both staying for lunch. Don’t let her talk you into eating out,” she ordered playfully but with full seriousness. He smiled down at her and nodded rather shyly. Turning back to you, your mother gave you a playful tap.
“I like him. He seem’s to listen to reason,” she chuckled, sending him a soft smile.
“Oh yeah? That’s what you think? I’ve always thought he was kind of a pushover,” you tease, turning to him and wrapping your arms around him. Looking up at him, you smile; a light giggle escaping your lips. Not going to lie, holding him and being this close to him kept sending tingles within you; head to toe. If it wasn’t for the ‘fake boyfriend’ charade, you definitely wouldn’t be this close to him; let alone be holding him the way you were. If just to place the cherry on top, you raised up on your tiptoes and gave him a quick peck on the cheek. His face reddened and he couldn’t help but look towards the floor.
“I like this,” your mother smiled warmly, looking up at Cas.
“What? Teasing my boyfriend?” you chuckle, sending Cas a silly face that caused him to laugh with you.
“Seeing you happy,” she admitted softly. Your smile fell and so did Castiel’s, all at once. You watched her for a moment, but she didn’t noticed your frown. She had turned away from you before she could see it plastered on your faces.
“You weren’t like this with Erin,” she sighed, taking her current sewing project to put away. Your arms fell from Cas and he couldn’t help but watch you curiously. Just the mere mention of Erin made you seem… broken almost.
“I was happy,” you declared, voice low almost mute.
“Honey, I don’t want to argue with you…,” she pursed her lips with a slight frown; sadness taking over her features. Things with Erin had been complicated. You had thought you loved him but after everything you’ve felt for Cas? The feelings you had for Erin weren’t even close. But you had been happy. Erin made you happy… perhaps not all time… but sometimes… didn’t he? Certainly not the night before graduation, that was for sure. Everything was just so confusing and it frustrated you. If anything, you didn’t love him, you knew that much…but were you really happy with him? When you were together during school? Before your whole break down?...
No. You weren’t happy. How could anyone be happy with someone who constantly brought them down all the time. How could you have been happy living that lie? You weren’t in a fairytale, Erin Andrews was not your knight; not like Jim was with Jenna, not like your father was with your mother, nor like you wanted Cas to be with you. Erin meant ...nothing to you… if anything, you used him as an excuse. You wanted to live that picture perfect life, but the whole time you were with him you were miserable. Why had you been lying to yourself this entire time? Those four years were the worst years of your life, how did you not realize it sooner?
“No… you’re right,” you admit hesitantly, going over everything in your head, “I wasn’t happy… was I?” your eyes finally met her gaze. It felt like an invisible weight had been lifted from your shoulders. Your mother made her way over to you slowly, realizing what you were finally admitting and knowing just how painful it was to feel. Cas stood beside you, reeling in everything you felt. It was a relief to know that you hadn’t given someone like Erin the power to hurt you, but it was devastating to know how much pain you kept causing yourself. Erin having a baby with someone else might have just been the most liberating thing you’ve experienced in your entire life. Because no matter how ideal it sounded, living a life with your ‘high school sweetheart’ wasn’t something you really wanted; it wasn’t in your cards. To be honest, you hated it here; the school, the town…not because of the people, but because… you weren’t happy here… living this cherry pie life… with someone you pretended to love. If you would have stayed… if he hadn’t cheated on you… you would have been consumed in this emptiness your entire life. You would have never met Cas; you would have never known what it was like to truly love someone… you would have never been... happy.
“Are you okay?” your mother pressed, worry coating her tone as she pulled away to give you a once over. Backing away, you couldn’t help but smile; a single tear rolling down your cheek.
“I’ve never felt better,” you whisper, sighing happily before wiping that tear away. Cas pulled your hand into his, the same worry coating his features as your mother's; a more concerned gesture rather than for the ‘fake boyfriend’ act. But you didn’t mind, because the truth was beginning to set you free and in order for it to take full effect, you needed to accept who you were and who you’ve become. You were someone who adored your family; who enjoyed nature and life; you were creative, honestly artistic. You loved to paint and draw; you loved playing board games and video games and carelessly singing the wrong words to every song, making up your own version. You enjoyed exploring new places, being and living in the moment. Erin took all of that away from you, you became bland… and somehow, being here with Cas… pretending but pleading for it all to be real… Cas was giving this all back to you; all you had to do was let him in, even if it was just a little bit at a time.
“I think I’m going to show Cas around,” you explain, squeezing his hand in yours as you took in the room around you; viewing it as if you were seeing it for the first time in over a decade. Both your mother and Cas were still etched with concern, neither of them really understanding the process and moment of clarity that just passed through your mind.
“I would really enjoy having lunch here, Mama,” you tell wholeheartedly. Her concern decimated quickly, joy consuming her. You missed this; the reality of just how much, was setting in. This was your home... and though you’d come back a few times in the past, this was the first time it felt like you were really there; it felt like it had been forever.
“Okay sweetheart,” she managed to whisper. She noticed the sudden change in you and even if it were just for a moment, she saw a glimpse of her old daughter; it made her feel whole again. She slipped past you and Cas, hiding the tears trapped in her eyes. Castiel was bringing you back to her; an angel sent by God himself.
“Your father is working in his study. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind if you interrupted him for a moment; to let him know you made it in again,” she explained, stopping in her tracks but not turning back. You could hear her hurt within her voice, you recognized it because you felt it too. You had been gone so long, a stoic version of yourself took control for so many years; almost, but not quite, as soulless like Sam had been…
“We’ll check in on him,” you agree, giving her ease. She continued on into the kitchen, more than likely going to decide what she was going to make for lunch. You began to head towards your father, when Cas pulled against your joined hands. Turning to him, he looked confused; tilting his head the way he does.
“Whats wrong?” you ask.
“You sure you’re okay?” he didn’t hesitate with his question. Smiling up at him you nodded.
“I am, I promise. Are you?”
“If you are,” he gave hesitantly.
“I want to show you who I was before Erin. After we see my dad of course,” you explain, preparing yourself; you were going to introduce Cas to a girl you hadn’t seen for a very long time.
“I would like that,” he stated flatly, concern still within him. How could you go back and forth with your emotions so quickly? Not that he minded, as long as you were being honest about being happy; he didn’t like seeing you upset. Tugging on his hand like he had yours, you walked him towards the study. Growing up, your father stayed busy here, leaving occasionally on business trips though he worked from home most of the time. Upon entering, you slid your hand from Cas’ to greet your father. When you hugged him, you held on longer like your mother had done you earlier. It confused him mostly, but he held you until you let go first. He welcomed Cas in, both of them shaking hands with one another. You could tell your father was still having questioning the idea of Cas; not because he didn’t like him, but he still didn’t know him yet. Sure you had mentioned quite a bit, but your father was wanting to see for himself. After a few minutes, the desk phone began to ring; your father claimed he could call back but you didn’t want to interrupt his work. Telling him, you and Cas, would be at the house the whole day and you could visit more later. He answered the call, sending a friendly wave toward you both as you left.
“Whats wrong?” Cas asked as you shut the doors behind you, giving a sigh.
“I think we’ll start in my old room,” you express, giving him an attempted smile. He followed you upstairs, curious as to why you avoided some of his questions at times. You slowed down as you approached the closed bedroom door. Sighing again before you pushed the door open, allowing Cas to enter first. He watched as he passed by you; you weren’t sad, no, this was a different emotion. He went into the room, instantly becoming fixed on everything your walls held. You hung your paintings and drawings up, but you also had band and movie posters along with song quotes and a few poems; some you had wrote and some you just liked. Cas was transfixed on everything, he had yet to notice your hesitation to come into the room. Your eyes were searching too though, some of the things you had created you had completely forgot about. Your eyes were glued on a piece of your artwork when Cas finally turned back to you, noticing you were still in the hall.
“What are you doing?” his hands were at his sides, fingers fiddling with a loose string on the sleeve of his shirt.
“I haven’t been in here since my sophomore year,” you tell, suddenly finding an interest to the floor by your feet.
“Why not?” he proceeded with his adorable little head tilt and furrowed his brows.
“Freshman year Erin asked me out for homecoming and things between me and him grew from there…. But he was really good at football. During sophomore year he somehow managed to be put on Varsity; he couldn’t have an artistic nerd as a girlfriend…, it would have ruined his ‘reputation'. So I changed instead of giving him a reason to dump me… I switched from my art and music classes to athletics. I started dressing fancier and waking up a whole hell of a lot earlier so I could fix my hair and put on makeup. I moved some of my things downstairs into the guest room, like my new clothes, and I just started staying down there. I was going to throw all of this stuff away but Mama said she would clean it up and move her sewing stuff up here. She never did it though. The years went by, she kept her room downstairs and I stopped coming up here altogether. I knew she hadn’t moved her room but I figured she just got rid of all of this stuff and used this space for storage,” you explain softly. Cas listened to every word you said, piecing together a puzzle you didn’t even know he was working on.
“When I came back the first time after leaving with Sam and Dean, she said everything was still here, in the same place I had left it. I’ve never came up here though.”
“Why are you showing me then?” his head straightened but his eyes were still scrunched.
“I’m letting you in, … this is something…,” you explain, glancing around the room as you recollected so many good memories, “… this is who I was Cas… it’s a part of me.” You wanted to go into the room, but it were as if you needed a little push. After a few seconds Cas raised his arm, extending his hand out and holding it open for you to place yours. You didn’t move, his eyes were glued to your’s as if he were waiting. He had no reason to hold your hand, unless it was just for moral support; none of your family members were up here with you so there was no reason for any affection. Something in you took control and your feet carried you to him; your hand slipping into his, your eyes tracing his blue ones. He gave your hand a soft, reassuring squeeze and you couldn’t help but look away. You wanted to kiss him, to hold him and never let go of this moment, but he wasn’t yours. Taking in a huge breath, you turned and sat on your bed; Cas still grasping your hand so you wouldn’t pull or slip it away. He watched you, making sure you were okay. A few moments passed before he decided to sit next to you.
“Thank you Cas,” you whisper, leaning your head onto his shoulder. You honestly weren’t sure what you were thanking him for specifically, Cas was just everything you needed him to be, whether he knew it or not. When you rested your head on him, his whole figure stiffened; not that you were even paying attention. You stayed against him for a little while, both of you taking in the beauty of your earlier creations. Cas was transfixed on a painting that hung above your door, but a poem that laid on your night stand, drew your attention. Slipping your hand from his, he turned his attention back to you; curious as to what you were doing. Leaning over, you grabbed the sheet of paper and brought it closer to you. Upon reading the poem, your face heated as you felt Cas’ leg simply resting next to yours; it wouldn’t have been so bad, if it had been a different poem…
“What does it say?” Cas questioned. Resting your hands and the poem in your lap, you turned towards him; your mind scattered.
“It’s nothing, just a poem that probably fell from the wall. Mom must have sat it here on the table,” you nod your head in the direction of the table but your eyes stayed glued to his.
“Will you read it?” he pressed.
“I’m not good at reciting poetry… it’s been a while,” you tried to persuade him to let it go.
“Please?” When Cas had been an angel, that one single word held little purpose. If Cas was down to business, you didn’t mess around with silly, irrelevant words like please. Now, occasionally you would hear it, but it wasn’t something he said often. When he said it, he was being sincere in his actions. How could you say no? Just read it, it’s only a poem…
“Okay,” you sigh the word. The butterflies inside of you were becoming more active; too late to dismiss the feeling. Holding the paper, you cleared your throat before reading the lines.
“ 'I choose to love you in silence…
For in silence I find no rejection,
I choose to love you in loneliness…
For in loneliness no one owns you but me,
I choose to adore you from a distance…
For distance will shield me from pain,
I choose to kiss you in the wind…
For the wind is gentler than my lips,
I choose to hold you in my dreams…
For in my dreams, you have no end…’
Rumi (1207-1273).”
“That’s rather… gloomy…,” Cas said, leaving you speechless for a moment before you drew yourself together.
“It’s beautiful,” you claim.
“It’s sad.” Cas was quick to counteract.
“Well… like I said yesterday, sometimes... things are better left unsaid."
“If you love someone, why would you not want to tell them?” Castiel was beginning to turn this into a debate. You kept your mouth sealed as you arose from the bed, feeling his glare on you as you walked over to an empty space on your wall. The piece of paper in your hands that held the poem still had tape on the edges. Carefully, you smoothed the sticky strip back to the wall, using your thumb to smooth out all the edges. After the wall held it firmly, you took a step back and glanced at the wall as a whole; you truly were something while growing up… Shrugging the thought off your shoulders, you moved over to your desk and opened the top drawer, skimming through the stack of poems you had written down.
“There’s a poem in here that you may like instead. It’s about bees,” you explain, your attention lost in the endless pile of words you kept looking over. Cas had his head tilted, confusion gripping him tight.
“Why do you ignore my questions?” You paused for a moment; clearly evident and it didn’t go unnoticed.
“I don’t, ... I answer you,” you declare, knowing full well what exactly he was talking about.
“Not all the time,” he stood from your old bed and walked to you, taking in your frazzled state as you seemed to be looking for something rather frantically.
“Earlier you said you loved someone,” he continued, making you shut the desk drawer rather harshly at his statement. You couldn’t find what you were looking for and you had no clue where he was going with this; it scared you.
“Yeah,” you said, nodding your head to agree with your words. If you didn’t oblige, you’d literally be contradicting yourself within a matter of seconds.
“How long?” You turned to him after he asked, eyes meeting his instantly and immediately you felt nauseous. What was he doing? Of course the voices inside you were yelling, persuading you to draw this out and maybe it wouldn’t end up the way you thought it was going to.
“How long for what?” you return, face as stoic as could be. Cas' brows drew together, as if he knew you were avoiding the question.
“How long have you loved them?” His jaw clenched, not out of anger but in a way to show you he wasn’t backing down. You sighed, not knowing what to do. You couldn’t tell him, it would lead him to finding out the truth. Not that the truth was a bad thing because you needed all the weight to be off of your chest, but because you didn’t really want to be in a solitary room, isolated away from other people, when he found out; you couldn’t bare being alone for that… you wouldn’t make it when he were to reject you.
“For a very, very… long time…,” you gave without giving specifics. Your eyes fell down to his hands, they were fiddling with a loose string on his jeans again.
“(Y/n),…” he called to you, almost as if he were pleading for you to look back to him, “… I,” but your mother interrupted, calling for you from down stairs.
“Sweetheart? Can you come here please?” Glancing at Cas, his attention was focused towards the door from where she had called. You walked closer to the door, looking back only to see if he would be following you down, but you couldn’t seem to get his attention.
“Cas… are you coming?”
“I’m going to stay,” he gave, moving his eyes over to read another poem on your wall. You sighed, wanting to know what he was going to say but also what he might be thinking; what was going through that head of his? Your mother called out for you again, checking to see if you had heard her.
“Coming,” you raise, not annoyed but so she was able to hear. Taking one last glance at Cas, you left the door opened behind you and began to shuffle down the stairs towards your mother. The conversation between you and the ex-angel still swimming around your head. What would he have said before your mom unknowingly interrupted? Where would the conversation had lead to? Perhaps your mother saved you from the one thing you weren’t quite ready to hear.

Title: The Truth About Steve | Part One (of 3)
Castiel's eyes begin to flutter shut as he leans against the checkout counter, his heart beating slowly and his head bobbing as he slowly drifts off. A weak voice in the back of his head fights with him to stay awake as he hears footsteps nearing him, but he simply rests his chin in his hand. "Hello," he murmurs. "What can I do for you today? Checking out? Cash or..." He shakes his head, his eyes briefly fluttering open at the sound of quiet laughter.
"You're the new guy, huh?" Castiel blinks a few times, standing up a little straighter. "Oh. Hello," he extends his hand in greeting. "I'm-"
"Steve. I can see your name tag," she laughs slightly, reaching out and shaking his hand before giving him another smile. "You looked beat- what happened? Did you stay up too late?" Castiel pauses, unsure what the correct response would be. Does he tell her he doesn’t have a place to stay, let alone enough money for the essentials of human living, or does he lie? He pauses as he slowly realizes he doesn't even know what humans would do late at night, and instead shrugs, faltering slightly.
"I didn't sleep well. I'm...in between homes right now." He casts his gaze away, and y/n frowns, tilting her head at him. Her heart swells slightly as she takes in his helpless, broken demeanor and she puts her hand on his shoulder sympathetically.
"We've all been there," she whispers, unable to ignore the tug at her heartstrings when he meets her gaze. "If you need help, let me know." Castiel tilts his head.
"You don't know me," his gaze flickers to her nametag. "Y/n, you do not know me." His gaze slides back to her, his eyes darkening slightly. "I could be dangerous," chills run up her spine at the way his voice drops an octave, yet his lips turn up in a quirky, lopsided half-grin, and he turns his gaze to the ground again. "Not that I am," he says quickly. "But I could be." Y/n laughs and shakes her head.
"For some reason I highly doubt that," she regards the faint glow around him, her eyes shining. "There’s something about you...I can't quite place it, but you seem good." Castiel’s eyes light up at this, and he smiles softly again.
"I'm glad you're not frightened of me." His eyes close again, and he sways slightly, gripping the counter for support. "Sorry- don't worry about me, I'm fine." He waves his hand as she approaches behind the counter, reaching out and grabbing hold of him to try and steady him.
"You don't look too good, Steve." She tightens her grip on his arm when he lurches forward, and she shakes her head. "Okay, that's it. We're closing early- come on, I'm gonna get you back to where you’re staying so I know you didn't die on the way." Castiel shakes his head slightly
"You can't do that," his breath comes out raspy, and y/n nods.
"Yes, I can- and I will."
"No, you..." He looks down at her. "When I said I'm in between homes- I don't have one y/n, as in- no friends, no family…I don’t have anywhere," she blinks a few times, her gaze falling on the dimming light around him, a small, low static him filling her ears.
"Well...then...you're coming home with me," she tugs his arm lightly. "Come on, I want to make sure you're okay. I can...I can make you some soup? You can camp out on my couch or something until you find a place." Castiel turns his gaze to her once more. Her heart beats quickly at the desperate look in his eyes, his obvious want for food and a warm place to stay battling with the doubts swirling around in his head.
"Steve, please." He blinks a few times, casting his gaze away and sighing.
"That's very kind of you," he replies. "I am forever grateful." She smiles and helps guide him out to her car, making sure there are no customers on her way, and locking up once they are outside. He practically falls into the passenger seat, his head falling back and eyes closing instantly, a small grunt falling past his lips. She smiles to herself, shutting the door after him and moving quickly over to her door, climbing in.
"If you end up being a murderer I'm going to be so angry," she mutters, eliciting a laugh from his direction, followed by a deep sigh. She glances over at him once more before starting the car and pulling out of the parking lot. Castiel grins again, his eyes involuntarily closing as the radio quietly hums to life.
“Mmm. It’s a good thing I’m not,” he replies softly, pausing before turning his gaze to her. “I’m very…pleasantly surprised by your kindness, y/n. In only a few weeks I’ve been shown kindness that revives my faith in this world.” Y/n blushes slightly and turns on her right turn single.
“Well…thank you. I’m just doing the right thing,”
“What if it’s not safe?”
“Well…I don’t know. I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt- you don’t seem bad.” Y/n looks away from the road to meet his gaze and smiles. “I guess I trust you? It’s not like we’re total strangers- we’ve been around each other a bit.” Castiel smiles softly and lets ’s his eyes close again. He hums contently, the cool air blowing some of his hair around a bit.
“That’s true,” he replies softly. “We haven’t talked much, but we’ve worked with each other for a while.”
“We haven’t talked because you’ve never answered me. It’s like you don’t know how to talk to girls or something.” Castiel’s cheeks heat up and he hangs his head in shame, his demeanor once again resembling a kicked-puppy.
“My…social skills are rusty,” he mumbles softly, his hand twitching slightly as a sad look crosses his face. He lifts his head up, eyes shiny, and turns his gaze to the car’s sunroof, staring at the sky as stars and street lamps fly past them. “I’m not too good with people,” he clarifies. “I’ve had a sort of…crutch ever since I’ve been here, and…” his voice trails off. “And now I don’t.” Y/n nods, but stays silently, keeping her gaze on the road. “It’s overwhelming,” he continues, “there are so many things you have to worry about. Food, shelter, clean clothes…” He sighs. “And on top of all of that, you have to…interact with others in a way that won’t offend them. Or scare them.”
“Steve?” She asks softly. “Is this the first time you’ve been on your own?” Castiel pauses and then nods.
“Yes. I had…well, I used to have a great deal of power, and I gave it up for what I thought was right, and for my friends. And, well, I still had my power but not the same position. Now I don’t have power, and…now my friends,” his eyes shine more as he stares at the sky, “they kicked me out of their place.” Y/n frowns.
“So, you sacrificed everything for them, and once you lost this…power, they just dumped you on the side of the road?” Castiel nods.
“Basically, yes.”
“Steve…” she shakes her head. “I’m so sorry- that’s not…that’s horrible. What kind of friend…”
“I’m sure he had his reasons,” Castiel interjects. “He wouldn’t have done it if there wasn’t a reason.” Y/n can’t help but notice the hope in his voice and she briefly turns her gaze to him.
“You don’t know though?”
“No, not really.”
There’s a long stretch of comfortable silence, both thinking about the other as y/n drives.
Castiel can’t keep his mind off how nervous he seems to be around her- and how genuinely kind she is to take him in like this, let him stay at her place- still with an underlying fear of something bad waiting for him at the house.
Y/n can’t wrap her head around why she’s so drawn to Steve- sure, he’s handsome, but she usually doesn’t throw trust at strangers like this. But something about Steve feels…safe, familiar, even. Yet she can’t figure out what, or why. She sighs, her grip tightening around the wheel slightly. She notices Steve’s eyes closing, and his head bobbing slightly as he slowly dozes off. Her eyebrows pull together slightly at the ever-dimming light surrounding him, not thinking as she reaches out to feel it, curiosity getting the best of her.
Her hand hovers just over his shoulder, a light tingle traveling up her arm, causing her to gasp. Steve jerks awake, his eyes widening as he pulls away from her slightly, his hand grabbing her wrist.
“I-I’m sorry,” she pulls her hand away quickly, her cheeks heating up as she turns her attention to the road. “I didn’t mean to wake you up, I just…” Her voice trails off, and Steve shivers slightly.
“It’s fine, y/n. You didn’t mean any harm…” He stretches in the limited space he has, a loud sigh escaping his lips. “I’m just very tired.” She glances over at him, frowning.
“You look kinda pale,” she murmurs.
As she pulls into her apartments parking lot, she glances over at him worriedly. She quickly parks and reaches over, lightly feeling his forehead.
“Oh, Steve,” she sighs, pulling her hand away and frowning. “You have a fever.” Castiel frowns, the same puppy dog expression crossing his face.
“A fever?”
“Yeah, you’re sick.” She sighs and opens her door. “Come on, I have some ibuprofen inside- it’ll help with the fever.” Castiel sighs, pushing the door open and practically rolling out of the car, barely catching himself on the door.
“I’m never sick,” he mumbles, holding his head slightly. “This is horrible.” Y/n rushes over to his side and grabs his arm.
“Come on, Steve. Let’s get you up to my room- if you want I could make soup, or…”
“No, no! Please, you’re already offering me a place to stay- and giving me medicine. You don’t need to do anything else for me.” Castiel replies quickly, guilt forming in the pit of his stomach.
“But, I must have dinner anyways, Steve. I might as well…” She looks hopefully at him, his quickly dulling blue gaze turning to her.
“I…y/n, I…” He sighs, his eyes fluttering shut. “I think I need to sit down,” he reaches out for the car to steady himself, and y/n’s eyes widen as her grip tightens on his arm.
“Okay, okay, come on. I’m taking you up.”
Castiel practically collapses onto the couch, his chest rising and falling heavily as he squeezes his eyes shut, the sound of y/n shuffling through drawers deafening to his ears. The material of his clothes scratches at his skin, his whole body practically tingling as every slight move sends an odd sensation through his body. He groans in discomfort, tugging the sleeves of his shirt up to try and get relief from the heat, only to breath heavily when it sends a painful, tingling sensation through his whole arm. Y/n rushes over and stares down at him.
“I, uh- I think I have an old boyfriend’s shirt you could wear- an ex, ex…uh.” She sets something down on the table. “Right. Stay here, I’ll be right back.”
Castiel’s eyes flutter open as she walks away.
“What do I need a shirt for?”
“So, you aren’t so overheated,” she calls out, quickly rushing back in with a plain grey T. “Here, if you want- uh, if you have boxers on or something, you could take off your pants- if it, uh…would make you more comfortable?” She holds the shirt out to him, and he stares forward at it. He takes the shirt, and shifts, pushing himself to stand up. “Whoa, what are you doing?”
“I’m going to…is there a restroom I could change in?” Y/n coughs slightly and nods. “Yeah, I, uh, sorry.” She laughs. “Yeah, over here.” She takes his elbow and gently leads him over to the small bathroom, only walking away when the door closes.
She rifles through the medicine cabinet, trying to find ibuprofen and aspirin when she hears a loud crash. “Oh my god,” she rushes back to the bathroom, throwing the door open without thinking.
Castiel grips the counter to support himself, leaning his forehead on it as well. His bare back is turned to her, the only clothing actually on him being plain, white boxers. Y/n chokes slightly, and whirls around. “Oh- oh I’m so, uh, oh god…I’m so sorry- I didn’t mean to- I hear a loud- I thought…I thought maybe you’d fallen, I didn’t…” Another low, almost pained groan falls past Castiel’s lips, and he shakes his head, attempting to stand up.
“It’s fine, y/n, I-” He lurches forward, catching himself on the doorframe, still gripping the shirt. She turns slowly.
“I…how did you even get this sick? What happened.” For the first time, y/n notices the dark circles under his sunken, tired eyes and how a light layer of sweat covers his torso, his skin almost looking sunburnt from the heat. Her jaw drops open. “Steve…what- why are you…how long have you not had a place to stay?” He turns his gaze to the ground, wobbling slightly despite his efforts to keep steady.
“A few months maybe.”
“Have you been eating?”
“Not consistently.”
“Are those the only clothes you have?” He pauses before slowly nodding. “Steve…” She frowns, and reaches out, grabbing his arm. “Come on, let’s get you to the couch.”
“What about the shirt?” Y/n pauses.
“If you’re comfortable you can leave it off, or you can put it on. I just thought you’d be more comfortable like this.” Castiel nods slowly and puts the shirt aside. “I could get you a blanket to cover up though- if you’d like.” He nods slowly.
“That would be nice,” he replies, watching her walk away only to reappear a few moments later with a thin, grey blanket. She drapes it across his lap, and opens a pill bottle, shaking out two small, round, red pills into his hand. “Take this,” she hands him a glass of water. “It should help your fever.” She stands up. “I’m going to change out of my work clothes, and then make some dinner. I’m probably going to make soup…would you like some?” Castiel’s eyebrows pull together and he nods slowly.
“Yes, I would…I would love some food, but please don’t go out of your way…”
“Steve, I have to eat. I might as well make you some food while I’m at it.” She smiles softly and then turns. “I’ll be right back- stay there, okay?” Castiel nods and his eyes flutter shut. He pulls the blanket up closer to his chest, allowing himself to relax on the couch more, his hot, flushed skin sensitive to the couch’s coolness. He hums softly, unable to open his eyes as he hears shuffling in the kitchen.
“Y/n?” He mumbles.
“Yeah, It’s me.” Castiel sighs at her voice, slumping on the couch more, now completely laying on the couch.
“I’m glad it wasn’t a robber- or a murderer,” he mumbles, swallowing thickly and trying to sit up. “I wouldn’t be much help,” y/n laughs at this, and he hears her soft footsteps grow nearer as she shuffles over to him, placing a cool cloth over his forehead.
“I’m just heating up some soup, it shouldn’t take too long.” She brushes strands of his slightly damp hair out of his face, practically combing through his hair with her hand as she stares down at him. Castiel mumbles incoherently, a small smile sliding across his face. Although y/n can’t hear what he says, she laughs softly, and her hand rests on the side of his face. “It’s like you’ve never had the flu before,” she mumbles softly, her head tilting as her lips curl into a small smile. His eyes flutter open and his lips briefly part.
“I don’t get sick very much,” he replies sheepishly.
“It must be because of you not taking care of yourself, recently.” She lightly taps his nose and stands up. “I’m gonna make you a bowl, and I’ll be right back over.” Castiel nods and forces himself into a sitting position, the blanket falling from around his shoulders and covering his lap. Y/n sits down next to him, holding the bowl carefully. She takes a small sip of the soup, and then nods, turning to Castiel. “Here, Steve.” She lifts a spoonful to his mouth and he glances at her briefly before his lips part and he takes the bite, quickly chewing the small chunks of vegetable and what appears to be chicken before swallowing. She smiles and reaches to get another spoonful.
“Y/n I can feed myself- you still need to eat.” She smiles slightly as she lifts the spoon up to him again, and he pauses, glancing over at her.
“I already ate, okay? I knew you wouldn’t let me cook food for you otherwise. So just…eat.” His cheeks turn red- whether from the fever, or embarrassment y/n wasn’t sure, but he complies, swallowing the soup and following her movements as she brings the spoon back to the bowl.
They continue this until the bowl is close to empty and Castiel refuses the last bites, claiming to be full. Y/n eyes him, squinting slightly.
“Are you saying that because you’re actually full or because you feel bad? Because we are literally like three bites away from finishing this.”
“We?” Castiel echoes.
“You, I meant you.” She clears her throat. “So, uh, are you sure? You really don’t want the rest…” Castiel’s gaze stays on the bowl.
“Well…”
“Steve, just take the last of it. You haven’t been eating properly- as you said, you haven’t had a home. You might as well?” Castiel swallows roughly, slowly nodding.
“Yes, please.” Y/n smiles and quickly feeds him the last of the soup. Castiel stares down at his lap, smoothing his hands over the light blanket. “Well…thank you, y/n- again. You’ve been so kind to me these past few hours.” She smiles, and pushes his hair back again, picking up the long-discarded (and no longer cool) washcloth. She sits up, and takes the bowl over to the sink, cautiously returning to the couch.
“So…” She sits down next to him, and he smiles over at her tiredly. “I can go grab you a pillow and an extra comforter- are you cold? Do you need more blankets? I do have the extra comforter if you need it- and some other heavier blankets. Would you like some?” He smiles.
“If it wouldn’t be much trouble- I could help, if you want.”
“No, no. You rest here. Luckily for you, it’s Friday. If I remember right neither of us have work tomorrow…right?” Castiel frowns and nods slowly.
“I work weekdays,” he replies.
“Yeah! Me too.” They pause for a long time, and then she nods, standing up. “Okay. I’ll go get your blankets then.” She smiles again and heads for the closet.
It only takes a few minutes to gather all the items, but by the time she’s back, Castiel is already lying down, his head resting on the couch’s armrest, his bare chest rising and falling rhythmically. She lifts his head carefully to stuff the pillow underneath, and lays the blankets over him, walking over to the hallway and flicking the lights off. “Goodnight, Steve.” She mutters, turning away from him and sighing. “I really, really hope you’re as good as I think you are.”

Title: Noisy Car.
Castiel smooths y/n’s hair down, caressing her face lovingly as he pulls the chair up to her bedside. He kisses her temple gently, and coos softly in her ear; stroking her hair, he kisses her cheek this time, bringing his hand to the other side of her face and turning her head gently to face him. He rests his forehead on hers, his heart breaking slightly at his name falling weakly past her pale, chapped lips. “Shh,” he whispers. “You’ve lost a lot of blood, don’t strain yourself.” Her eyes are dull, yet they somehow light up when she meets his gaze, and he smiles softly to her, pressing his lips to hers in a loving kiss. “I know, honeybee. You’re strong…” his voice comes out choked, and he bows his head, resting it in the crook of her neck. “I’m so sorry, y/n. I couldn’t get there…I’m useless without my powers.” Y/n reaches up weakly, tangles her fingers in his hair, and pulls his lips back to hers.
“Don’t say that…” she mumbles, letting go of him and closing her eyes. Castiel takes her hand in his, keeping one on the side of her face. “You’re still good for kissing,” she murmurs, a small smile brightening her features. “And talking, brightening my day, and cuddling...” Her eyes open slowly, and she beams up at him. “You’re still my Angel, Castiel. You’ll always be my Angel. No matter what. They can’t take that away from you, Cas. No one can.” His eyebrows furrow, and he stares down at her.
“I do not understand why you’ve stayed so loyal to me, y/n.”
“You’ve stayed loyal to me,” she says, “and I love you.” She grins weakly. “So, if that means I have to put up with your whining about having to pee, then that’s fine. I’ll take it. I’ll take that over not having you any day.” Castiel’s face twists slightly.
“Urination is such an inconvenience,” he mumbles grumpily, kissing her cheek quickly. She nods.
“Yeah, Angel. I know.” Castiel smiles, pushing some of her hair out of her face. “I’m cold,” she mumbles.
“I’ll get you a blanket.” Castiel rises quickly, only to be stopped by her hand grabbing his arm.
“You could just hold me.” She says. “You’re a lot warmer than a blanket.” Castiel glances at the door, as if that will give him the answers to everything before he nods, moving to the other side of the bed and tossing the blankets aside. He removes his shoes and climbs in the bed, moving next to her. At first, he lays there stiffly, unsure of what he is supposed to do. Y/n rolls her eyes slightly and gathers her strength to flip over to him, cuddling up next to him and laying her head on his chest. “My hero,” she whispers, half sarcastically as her eyes flutter shut. “My Angel…” Castiel pulls her closer, once again resuming to stroke her hair softly. He whispers a phrase to her softly in Enochian, and she smiles contently. It was a phrase he said to her often, although he hadn’t spoken it in English ever. It was easier for him to say it in Enochian. In a way, it felt more intimate, a secret he could share with her alone, although she did not speak the language. He’d never taught her the phrase, she simply concluded on her own one day. It was a way for the former Angel to express his fondness without feeling as vulnerable and foreign, and it just felt right. The words I love you simply didn’t seem to express his feelings enough. Y/n sighs happily.
“I’m glad you got me out of the hospital, Castiel.” She whispers. “I wanted to be here, at the bunker- with you, and Sam and Dean…” her voice trails off, and he nods.
“I’m sorry for letting them take you, y/n. When the noisy car approached, I did not know what they wanted.” He says solemnly. Y/n giggles lightly, and tilts her head up, placing a kiss on his jaw.
“Noisy car?” She repeats her lips twitching in amusement. Castiel glances down at her.
“Yes. The noisy, big read truck with the flashing lights.” Y/n’s giggle brings a smile to Castiel’s face, and she buries her face in his chest.
“Castiel, its called an ambulance.”
“I know what it is called, y/n.”
“Then…then why’d you…”
“I wanted to hear your laugh,” he whispers. “I missed it.” Y/n blushes, and rolls her eyes slightly at the former angel’s sentiment.
“Whatever, you dork.”
Castiel tilts her head up, and kisses her sweetly. “I’m your dork though, right?” He whispers. “Even if I may not be an Angel?” Y/n nods.
“Yes, Cas. You’ll always be mine, no matter what you are. I already told you this.” Castiel smiles.
“I wanted to hear it…again, y/n. I…thank you.” She smiles gently.
“I love you, Cas.” Castiel’s heart pounds wildly in his chest, and his eyes light up.
“Elasa biab en tofagilo.”
Y/n blushes slightly, returning his sentiment with another kiss, this one longer, and filled with more longing than before. “Thank you,” she says, breaking the kiss and smiling up at him. “For everything, thank you.” Castiel stares down at her, unsure.
“Why are you thanking me? For loving you?” She smiles.
“No, you feathered idiot. For snuggling with me.” Castiel’s lips twitch up into a smile.
“I should be the one thanking you, y/n. I enjoy holding you.” He brushes her hair back and kisses her forehead. “I just want you to rest, and get better, y/n.” She smiles softly, and kisses his cheek.
“I will, if you promise me to stop saying you’re useless.”
Castiel grins, and nods. “I have been told I’m good for talking to,” he murmurs. “And cuddling, apparently.” Y/n nods.
“Yeah, Castiel. Angel or not, you’re one warm guy- and you give nice hugs. So, yes. That’s something no one can ever take away from you.” Castiel smiles proudly, and kisses y/n.
“You’re the most beautiful being in all of existence,” he whispers. “I’m beyond lucky that you chose me, y/n/n.” She rolls her eyes, once more a hot blush spreads across her cheeks.
“Whatever, dork.”
“Nerd.” Castiel chirps.
“Geek.” Y/n counters. Castiel simply smiles, and concedes, pressing another soft kiss to her forehead, and once again whispering the phrase to her before sending her to sleep:

Title: Midnight.
Y/n crosses her arms over her chest as she plops down on the bar stool. Dean raises an eyebrow at her as he takes a sip from his beer, and he sighs. “C’mon, Y/n. This’ll be fun- there’s no need to get bitter,” his voice drops instantly as a tall, blonde girl walks past him. She glances over her shoulder at him and smiles. “Dude,” Dean murmurs. “I think I just found my New Year’s kiss,” Sam rolls his eyes slightly at his brother’s remark and he shares a look with y/n. She sighs and shrugs.
“I mean, I guess it’s…kinda tradition?” Her eyebrows furrow as she glances around the room, and shifts uncomfortably on the bar stool. Sam sits down next to her, and orders two beers.
“Yeah. Never been my sort of thing, I guess.” Sam mutters.
“Yeah, Sammy here never likes to have any fun!” Dean says- his voice a little louder than necessary as he finishes his beer. “Well, wish me luck. Not that I need it.” He tilts his head and grins. Dean spins on his heels, and walks over to the blonde.
Y/n sighs and her gaze drops to the floor. “So, you gonna follow in tradition with our dear brother?” Sam asks, his careful gaze watches y/n’s reaction. She shrugs, and slowly meets his gaze.
“I mean…there isn’t many options.” She murmurs. “Not many good ones, that is.” She taps the table with her index finger. “This isn’t going to be much fun, Sammy. Dean’s already gone off and found some girl…you’re gonna be gone soon also-” Sam shakes his head, and reaches his hand out, placing it on her shoulder.
“I won’t leave you if you don’t want me to y/n.” She shakes her head slowly, opening her mouth to respond.
“Hey, pretty girl.” She turns around at the voice.
“Uhh, do I know you?” Y/n murmurs, glancing back at her brother before settling her gaze on the clearly drunk man in front of her.
“Nope, but I’d- like to get to know you.” He moves forward, and smiles. “If you know what I mean, baby.” Sam cocks his head, standing up from the bar stool.
This catches Dean’s attention, and he glances over from the blonde sweetheart, his eyes instantly widening as he excused himself. He hurries over to Sam’s side, an angry “What the hell,” rumbling from his chest. Sam reaches out to stop Dean, but he pulls his arm away. “The hell you think you’re doing?” Dean asks, moving up to his sister’s side and making himself as tall as possible, squaring his shoulders. The man glances up at Dean, his pupil’s blown wide.
“I’m talkin’ to this pretty lady,” he slurs, and reaches out, tucking a strand of y/n’s hair behind her ear.
“Like hell you are, you son of a bitch.” Dean moves his body in front of y/n, his eyes narrowing. “Get the hell out of here before I kick your ass.”
“You? Kick my ass? Listen up, pretty boy-” Whatever words the man was going to say is cut off as a hand is placed on his shoulder. The guy turns around, anger marring his face. “What the fu-” His voice catches in his throat when his gaze meets Castiel’s.
“I think you should leave. Now- and apologize to her.” The man turns around, a dazed look in his eyes as he mumbles an apology and hurries out of the bar. Castiel’s hard gaze softens as the man leaves, and his eyes shine brightly. “I came as quickly as I could, Dean.” Sam nods once, sitting back down and Dean moves forward to greet Cas with a hug.
“Thanks, man.” Castiel’s gaze falls to y/n, and he tilts his head.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah- I’m fine. You guys…you overreacted- it was fine.” She mumbles, giving her brother a confused look. Dean holds his hands up.
“That guy was all over you, y/n. Half the guys in this bar are staring at you. Maybe Cas here should stay with you- make sure other guys don’t bother her, right buddy?” Castiel tilts his head in confusion, his blue eyes darkening slightly.
“I should…” Dean coughs and smiles quickly, raising his eyebrows and not-so-discreetly nodding towards his sister. Castiel’s eyes light up, and he nods quickly. “Ah- yes, y/n.” He turns to y/n, a loose smile on his face. “If you’d have me, I’d love to keep you company.” Dean sighs, his eyes rolling up to the ceiling as he turns around slightly. Y/n’s lips part, and she frowns, nodding slowly.
“Yeah, yeah Cas- you don’t have to ask, I always…uh, you’re always welcome to keep me company, Cas.” Y/n’s cheeks tinge pink, and she looks down briefly. “Uh- yeah…if you want, you can totally…uh…stay?” Cas’ eyes light up and he smiles, taking a seat next to her. Dean’s eyebrows raise, and he claps once.
“Okay. You good? Keep her safe, Cas.” He points at his friend, and then slaps Sam on the back. “Get out there, find you a girl to kiss, Sammy.” He smiles, barely containing a laugh. “That girl- ah, I think her name’s Cindy? Sarah…I’m not sure- anyways, she’s got a sister, if you wanted to-” Sam shakes his head, and smiles thinly.
“I can find a girl for myself, Dean.” He mumbles, grabbing his beer and standing up. He glances at Y/n and Cas one last time before waving, and walking past Dean.
Dean smiles and stares at y/n and Cas, his eyebrows raised. “Well, you kids have fun,” he says. “But, not too much fun.” Castiel tilts his head as Dean walks away, and turns to y/n.
“Too much fun? I thought fun was a good thing.” He mumbles, his eyes squinting slightly as he attempts to understand. Y/n laughs a little too loud, her smile a little too big as she leans forward.
“Cas- it’s an expression. It just means…ah…” Her face turns slightly red as Castiel stares back at her innocently, his eyebrows furrowed. “It just means…don’t…have too much fun,” she mumbles. “Like…fun.” This only deepens Castiel’s confusion, and his lips part as he prepares to ask another question. Y/n smiles, placing her hand on his. “You know what? It doesn’t matter. He was just being…ah- it doesn’t matter.” She clears her throat, and laughs nervously, taking a sip of her beer. “Ah…so, did Dean like…pray to you, or something?” Castiel nods.
“He said I need to come and scare some guy off. That there was a man ‘hanging all over you.’ So, I came right away. I was under the impression you were in danger…” His voice trails off, and y/n’s face falls.
“You don’t have to stay here, Castiel. I’ll be fine on my own- really.” She gives him a bright smile to convince him, but he squints, and tilts his head.
“I do want to be here, y/n. With you- that is. I don’t care much to be at this bar…but, I do want to be here with you.” Castiel scoots the bar stool closer, his movements rather awkward as he moves his hand over hers. “I rather enjoy your company, y/n…” She smiles, and glances at the ground.
“If you…didn’t want to be in the bar, we could go outside? I didn’t really want to come either…it’s not really my thing.” Castiel’s gaze softens as he nods, and he holds his hand out.
“Come on.” She takes his hand, and they stand up, moving across the suddenly full room to get to the doors. People shout all around them, and hurry to the middle of the floor. Castiel and y/n get swept up in the crowd, and Castiel wraps his arms around her, moving his body to best shield her from the onslaught of people. “What is…happening,” Castiel glances around, his eyes falling on the clock.
11:58.
His lips part, and he tilts his head, glancing down at y/n. “It’s almost midnight.” His voice is barely a whisper, the sudden realization dawning on him. This is the real reason Dean called him. Y/n glances up at him, her e/c eyes barely visibly behind her quickly expanding pupils.
“Ah…yeah, I guess it is.” She laughs, almost nervously.
“I- correct me if I am wrong, y/n…” Castiel suddenly finds himself nervous, almost too nervous to speak, but he swallows roughly, and looks down, taking a quick breath to compose himself. “I’ve heard it’s customary to…kiss someone, at midnight. Today- not every day, that would be ridiculous…if it was every night. I know it’s typically supposed to be a stranger- but I was thinking, y/n…” He glances over at the clock nervously, startled to hear people begin to chant.
10-
“Y-y/n, would you like to…I mean, only if you want, please, don’t feel pressured to at all…”
8-
“Maybe- would you like to kiss me, y/n?”
7.
Y/n breaths in deeply, her lips parting as she glances up at him, her eyes widening. Castiel’s blue eyes stare down at her, filled with hope, fear, and something else. His eyebrows pull down, and his lips part as he stumbles back in shock. “I- I’m sorry, y/n.” He mumbles. “I overstepped. I didn’t mean to…I’m sorry, y/n.” He quickly pushes past the crowd, earning a few angry looks from a few people. Dean lifts his head up to see over the crowd, watching Castiel push his way past the crowd, leaving y/n standing in the middle of the room. His face falls, and he shakes his head, moving the girl to the side slightly.
“Go after him!” He shouts, catching y/n’s attention. “You idiot, go!” The look of desperation on Dean’s face confuses y/n, but she stumbles towards the door, tearing her gaze from her brother.
5.
Y/n stumbles out and her gaze immediately falls on him. Castiel’s gaze is on the ground, his hands in his pockets as he leans against one of the poles holding the roof to the entrance up. “Cas!” She shouts, moving forward. He glances over at her, his eyes misty.
“Y-y/n?”
3.
She moves forward, quickly reaching him and standing on her tip-toes to wrap her arms around his neck, ignoring his confusion as she presses her lips against his. He freezes, one hand halfway out of his trenchcoat pocket, hovering just over her waist. However, he responds quickly, wrapping his arms around her and lifting her slightly, his eyes fluttering shut.
2.
Loud cheering can be heard coming from inside the building, and small flurries of snow begin to fall from the sky. Castiel turns slightly, and she falls back on her feet. They both breathe deeply- quickly, and then he leans down; kissing her again, one hand going to the side of her face, the other resting on her hip.
1.
Y/n smiles into the kiss, one hand sliding to rest on his shoulder as she tangles the other in his hair. He pulls away briefly, and rests his forehead against hers. “Y/n…” Her eyes flutter open, and she smiles up at him, her hand leaving his shoulder to rest on his cheek.
“I would love to be your New Year’s kiss, Castiel.” His eyes light up slightly, almost as if he didn’t quite understand before, and his face breaks out into a grin, and he kisses her again quickly.
“You are beautiful,” he murmurs. “That’s why all the men in the bar were staring at you: you are beautiful.” He cradles her face in his hands, once again resting his forehead on hers. She grins, giggling lightly when he kisses her cheek. “Thank you, y/n…” His voice trails off as the doors to the bar open, and he glances up, peering into her eyes. “Is this…only because of tradition? Because of New Year’s…?” Y/n smiles widely, and shakes her head.
“Cas…no, hell no. It’s not. It just made things more…convenient. It made it easier.” Castiel nods slowly.
“That is what Dean told me.” He murmurs. “He told me that if things ended badly, I could just blame it on the holiday.” Y/n’s eyes narrow.
“Dean told you to do this?” Castiel’s eyes soften innocently, and he tilts his head.
“I asked him for advice…I didn’t know how to approach this.”
“Plus, you kids are just too damn lovesick.” Castiel pulls away from y/n quickly, his back straightening.
“Dean.” Dean’s eyebrows raise, and he smirks quickly.
“Yep. You see- I’m very conflicted here. You’re my best friend,” he points to Castiel- “but…you’re my sister.” His gaze turns to y/n. “On the one hand, I want my best friend to get out there- get the girl he wants.” His face twists in slight discuss, and he shudders slightly. “But then again…it’s my sister. I don’t want him to screw my sister- hell, I don’t want anyone to screw my sister.” Castiel’s head tilts curiously.
“I am not ‘screwing’ your sister,” Castiel says, going as far to put air-quotes around the word. “I’m not quite sure what you mean by that- but I can assure you, we are not ‘scr-”
“Cas!” Castiel turns to y/n, his hands still up, midair-quote. She reaches forward and grabs his hands, bringing them down. “Don’t…don’t do that, please.” She mumbles, glaring at Dean. “Let’s just go, okay?” Cas moves forward quickly, leaning down and whispering in her ear, still clearly confused. She jumps back, and smacks him slightly. “C-cas, you can’t say that!” His eyebrows furrow in confusion, and he tilts his head.
“I don’t understand,” he stumbles backwards when Dean grabs his sleeve, and Dean grabs his neck, somewhat roughly.
“Listen, Cas, I’ll explain it to you later, okay? You got the girl, now it’s time for the talk.”
“The talk?” Sam and Cas ask at the same time, Sam’s expression slightly more horrified than Dean’s. Dean nods.
“The ‘hurt her and we kill you’ talk.” Dean clarifies, smacking his brother. “Don’t think so dirty, Sammy.” Sam stutters, attempting to find an excuse as Castiel slinks away form Dean, and jogs up to y/n.
He puts his arm around her tentatively, and places a soft kiss on her temple. “Are you upset?” He whispers, closing his eyes as he leans his head on hers.
“No, of course not. I just…you really need to talk to Dean about what some of that stuff means.” Castiel nods.
“I will make sure to ask him later, y/n.” She grins, and shakes her head, glancing down at the ground as they walk. After a while, Castile sighs loudly, and murmurs: “So, did I really get you? Are we…” Castiel’s brows furrow as he thinks of a way to describe it. “…together now?” Y/n smiles softly, and nods.
“Yeah, if you want.” She says. Castiel swallows, and smiles.
“Well, I’d really like that. Oh, and y/n?”
“Yeah?”
“Happy New Year.”

Title: Winter Wonderland
Y/n sighs as she quickens her pace, doing her best to keep up with her brothers’ long strides. She sips her cocoa, and shoots a quick look up at Dean, whose busy arguing with Cas quietly, waving his hands around in erratic gestures. She sighs, and her eyes dart around as she searches for a trashcan to throw her now empty cup away in. Sam glances down at her, and quirks one eyebrow.
“Who you lookin’ for, y/n?” He asks, a sly smile sliding across his face. “Someone important here?” She rolls her eyes slightly at his comment and laughs dryly.
“Y/n’s lookin’ for someone?” Dean echoes, mimicking his brother’s expression. She shakes her head, and smiles lightly.
“I’m not looking for someone, I’m looking for…ah! There!” She darts forward quickly, tossing the cup in the bin. She turns around. “I was looking for a trashcan, shouldn’t be that hard to find one,” she comments, and pulls her jacket around her body tighter, trying to gain more warmth as she scurries back over to them. “Honestly, you’d think that they’d be easier t- whoa!” Her foot hits a patch of ice, and quickly slides up off the ground into the air, sending her flying backwards. She crashes to the ground, and closes her eyes, somewhat from the brief pain and the icy chill that runs up her spin when some snow wriggles it’s way down her jacket- but mostly out of embarrassment. Light laughter fills her ears and she opens her eyes, peering up at the murky sky, blinking when some snow lands on her lashes. “O-oh, shut up.” She grumbles, slowly moving up.
Cas kneels by y/n’s side, and places his hand on her back, gently grabbing her hand and helping her to sit up. “Are you okay?” He asks, his head tilting slightly as his eyes light up with concern…and amusement. A light blush creeps across her cheeks, and she nods.
“Ah, yeah. I just slipped. On some ice.” Cas’ lips quirk up into a big smile, and he laughs.
“Yeah, I figure that much out.” He helps her to her feet, still grasping her hand. “You gonna be okay?”
“Nah, I think she needs a big, strong man to help her walk on this treacherously icy sidewalk.” Dean mocks, shoving her lightly as he walks up.
“Too bad there aren’t any around.” She quips, raising an eyebrow at him.
“Y/n, I’m hurt,” he places his hand on his chest, “I can’t believe you’d insult Cas. What did he ever do to you?” Y/n stutters slightly, almost falling again as she moves back. The only thing that keeps her from falling, is in fact Cas- who’s still holding on to her hand, his other hand resting on her back.
“I believe she was talking about you, Dean.” Cas says dryly, a small smile still on his face. She smiles, a soft laugh falling past her lips as she shivers, glaring at the ground. Dean snorts, and rolls his eyes slightly.
“Oh, whatever. I’m gonna go grab something- y/n, you have to stay out here.” Dean says, hurrying towards one of the nearby shops.
“But it’s cold out here!”
“And I have something I need to grab. That you…can’t see. Just wait out here, okay y/n? Sam, Cas c’mon. I need your help.” Sam moves forward, shaking his head slightly at his brother. Cas hesitates, and glances down at her.
“Ah…I think I’ll stay here, Dean,” he says, another small smile gracing his features. “Make sure she doesn’t fall again.” Dean stares at the two of them, silently communicating with Cas before shrugging.
“Alright man, whatever. C’mon Sammy!” He spins around, and pushes through the doors, not waiting for Sam, who dashes in quickly behind him. Y/n glances down at the ground, her cheeks tinging pink.
“I-I’m fine…you really don’t have to, ah,” she laughs slightly, and looks up at him. Cas turns his blue gaze to her, and their eyes meet. He laughs slowly, and her eyes light up slightly, her smile involuntarily widening.
“I don’t mind keeping you company, y/n,” he murmurs. “I like spending time with you…” Her cheeks brighten, and she looks down again.
“Ah- I, I actually meant you didn’t need to still hold onto me…I’m fine now.” Cas pulls his hand away quickly and stakes a step back from her.
“Oh, sorry. I didn’t even realize I was…” His eyebrows crinkle, and he shakes his head. “Anyways…” His gaze flits over her shoulder as he sighs, his breath leaving his mouth in a puff of white fog. Y/n laughs at this, and exhales deeply, laughing again as she watches the puff of smoke like air. She lifts her face to the sky, her e/c eyes shining brightly as she smiles. Cas’ lips part, and his head tilts as he observes her. Some snowflakes manages to land on her eyelashes, and wind in with her h/c hair, settling down on her shoulders and blue scarf. His gaze slides over to him, and she laughs, slightly embarrassed as she looks down.
“Man, do you remember when it was actually warm?” She asks, briefly looking up at him before turning around, her boots crunching in the snow. “I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love the snow, but…” She sighs, wrapping her arms around herself and shivering slightly, glancing over her shoulder to grin at him. “It’s cold as hell, isn’t it?”
Cas laughs, his eyes briefly closing before he shrugs, stepping forward to stand beside her. “I dunno,” he says, leaning towards her slightly. “It’s nice, in a strange way. Everything’s so still,” she smiles, and nods.
“Yeah, I guess.” She shivers again, and he glances down at her.
“Oh, here…” he moves forward, swiping the small bits of snow off the bench. “Here,” he says, grabbing her hand lightly.
“Uh- Cas, that bench is going to be cold and wet…I’m not…”
“I wiped the snow off,” Cas says, his eyes lighting up as he smiles. “It’ll be fine, c’mon. It’s better than just standing and waiting.” Y/n sighs as he sits down, and shrugs.
“I mean, I guess…” She mumbles, and gingerly sits down next to him, grimacing when the cold bites through the thick fabric of her pants.
“See?” He says, and grins at her. “It isn’t…it’s not…ah,” he blinks, and looks up at the sky, his jaw clenching slightly. “…it’s not that bad, y/n/n.” His voice lowers. She rolls her eyes slightly.
“God, you haven’t called me that in years.” She mumbles, unconsciously resting her head on his shoulder. “We talked a lot more back then, didn’t we?” She mumbles, more to herself than to him. He nods slowly, letting out a long sigh.
“Yeah, I guess we did.” He wraps an arm around her, pulling her closer as he rests his head against hers. “I guess…” His voice trails off. “As you got older, I mean…” He sighs again, tilting his head slightly to look at her face. “You just…I mean, you were always…” Cas racks his brain, trying to find the right words to say. “…y/n/n, you were always adorable. The cutest girl I’d ever met,” he sighs softly as she slowly meets his gaze, her cheeks turning red. “But you got older…man, you’re so beautiful…I don’t…” He closes his eyes. “I’m about to do something really, really stupid. Please…stop me if you want to, y/n.” He opens his eyes, only for them to flutter shut a few moments latter as he exhales shakily, his warm breath grazing her cheek as he tilts his head down. Cas hovers there for a few seconds, his nose lightly brushing up against hers, and he shifts slightly, tilting his head and pressing his lips against hers. Cas kisses y/n softly, lingering for a moment before he kisses her again. “You’re so amazing,” he whispers, his eyes still closed as he places a soft kiss on lips once again. At some point, y/n’s eyes closed, and she sat there still, stunned at what was happening.
Everything seemed so perfect. Y/n knew that it was cold all around her; she could feel the snow falling around them, but she didn’t feel cold. He was so warm, and that was all she could feel. His arm was wrapped around her so tightly, his lips were so warm on hers, and that was all she could focus on. She could barely even respond as he continued to kiss her lightly, murmuring his adoration for her. A soft sigh escapes past her lips, and her eyes flutter open, her eyelids feelingly overwhelming heavy as she stares into his eyes. His eyes, which are looking at her so intensely, clouded with a thick layer of love, hopefulness, and worry. His cheeks, which were turning slightly pink as he breathes quietly, his eyes scanning her face for an answer: any answer. Y/n swallows, her eyelids fluttering and her lips curling into a soft smile. “Cas…” She whispers, her eyes closing again as tilts his head, his lips finding hers again as he sighs, taking that as her answer. And it is. It’s the best answer she can give in the moment, because there is nothing else she can say. He moves his other hand and rests it on the side of her face, his fingers winding into her hair as he holds her head softly. Y/n sighs again when he breaks the kiss, his eyes searching hers when they open. Cas smiles, swiping a flake of snow off her cheek gently, his lips parting.
“All I want is for you to be happy, y/n.” He whispers, his voice small. “Would you…be happy with me, y/n/n?” The jingle of the doorbell doesn’t break them from their trance, blue eyes still stare down at her, expectant, once again hopefully: waiting for an answer.
Y/n can hear Dean’s startled “What the fuck?” But she still stares up at him, her eyes widening slightly now.
“I- Cas…I don’t think…anything could make me happier.” His eyes close, and he kisses her again, his lips curled in a smile.
“You don’t know how relieved I am,” he rasps. “For a second there I thought…” He closes his eyes, almost as if the idea is painful, and buries his face in the crook of her neck, sighing loudly.
They stay like that for almost a minute before Dean finally clears his throat loudly, catching their attention for the first time. Cas breaks away from her, glancing over at his friend warily, standing up slowly. Dean’s gaze flits between Cas, and Y/n, before he shakes his head, glancing down at the ground. “C’mon, kiddo.” He mutters, smacking y/n’s shoulder lightly and heading down the street, just as a very confused Sam walks out of the store, nudging his brother and whispering:
“What was that about?”
“Looks like y/n’s got herself a boyfriend,” Dean laughs, glancing down at her. “And my best friend…ah,” his face twists slightly, as if he’s just now working it out in his head. “My best friend better be pretty damn careful what he does and says around me,” he mutters, shoving his hands in his jacket pockets.
Cas carefully loops his arm around y/n’s waist, pulling her to him as they walk. “I will.” He murmurs, lifting his face to the sky and smiling, his eyes shining with bliss. Dean glances at this out of the corner of his eye and rolls his eyes slightly.
“I’m happy for you,” he mutters. “Both of you. So, neither of you screw this up, okay?”
Cas closes his eyes, and hums softly. “Not in my worst nightmare.”
