After the snowfall by Anton de Flon Via Flickr: Sublime light at sunset as Olderbark Mountain is flanked by clouds, his nose aglow facing the last moments of sunlight.
Asher Brown Durand climbed into the Catskills in July 1857 and spent part of the day drawing a single tree. The inscription - "Catskill Mts. July 24th" - turns the sketch into something almost diary-like: proof of one quiet encounter between an artist and a landscape. Durand believed painters should study nature directly, patiently, without spectacle.
