Last year, I started a series of dinosaur line art. This is the first "four". :)

Compsognathus longipes is a small theropod known from two skeletons from the Upper Jurassic limestones of Germany and France. The reconstruction is based on a smaller, German specimen. For a long time it was considered the smallest dinosaur, but now smaller taxa are known.

Sinoceratops zhuchengensis is a centrosaurine and currently the only genus of Asian ceratopsids. It is known for partial skulls with unusual collar ornamentation from the Upper Cretaceous of China.

Maiasaura peeblesorum is a hadrosaurid known from more than 200 specimens, including nests with eggs and cubs, from Montana and Alberta. It overturned previous ideas about the parental behavior of dinosaurs.

Hypsilophodon foxii is a small ornithischian known from a variety of specimens from England. It was previously depicted as an arboreal animal, but is now known as a terrestrial, running herbivore.

Spec-Dinovember Day 12: Number-ceratops, a ceratopsid with multiple horns

Not to be confused with a rhinoceros of similar name, Bicerorhinus motocephalus is a pachyrhinosaurin centrosaur closely related to Stellasaurus. Found on the west coast of Laramidia, these dinosaurs are separated from their more famous eastern relatives by the rising Rocky Mountains. They can be found in what will one day become British Columbia, roaming the valleys between the mountains and coastal volcanic chains. Weighing in at 2 tons, they are rather average for a derived centrosaur in size and morphology save for their laterally paired nasal horns. No other ceratopsid shows this condition and it's quite uncertain as to how their's came to be.

This was the prompt I was looking forward to because ceratopsids are my favorite dinosaurs! I kicked around a couple ideas for this dinosaur, one where it has an extra horn behind each eye like in Psittacosaurus sibiricus, one in which it actually had no horns so I could name it Aceratops or some variation, but I settled on two nose horns. A neat little bit of trivia, ceratopsids ancestrally only had the brow horns, and the chasmosaurines and centrosaurines independently evolved nasal horns. But because they were independetly acquired they are structurally different. In chasmosaurines the nasal horn is an epiossification, like those on the frill, that fuses to the nasals during growth. In centrosaurines it's an outgrowth of the nasals, which are paired, so there is a suture that splits the nasal horn down the middle! as the animal ages this suture fuses, and it fuses in a distinctive way: from the tip downward. So what if they never fused? well, there'd have to be some more steps to separate the halves but that was the idea anyway

Dinosaur Sinoceratops zhuchengensis, of Late Cretaceous, China!

Not only the first ceratopsid dinosaur discovered in China, Sinoceratops zhuchengensis is thus far the only (confirmed) ceratopsid known from Asia. At an estimated length of 5 metres (16 ft) and body mass of 2 tonnes (2.0 long tons; 2.2 short tons), it is also one of the largest known centrosaurines, much larger than any other known basal members of this group. Sinoceratops bears several characteristics that resemble features in chasmosaurines, blurring the distinction between the Centrosaurinae and Chasmosaurinae. It is thus thought that Sinoceratops may represent a lineage that invaded Asia from North America through Beringia, before the two clades diverged.

The Late Cretaceous Xingezhuang Formation seemed to be good at producing giants. Not only did Sinoceratops zhuchengensis, the largest centrosaurine, live there, but the most common dinosaur in the formation was the largest hadrosaur, Shantungosaurus. The titanosaurian sauropod Zhuchengtitan also lived here. Alongside these giants lived the smaller leptoceratopsids Zhuchengceratops and Ischioceratops, and the caenagnathid Anomalipes. The apex predator of this formation was Zhuchengtyrannus, a large tyrannosaurid similar to Tarbosaurus, who certainly seemed to have its work cut out for it.

#Archovember Day 2 - Furcatoceratops elucidans

Hailing from Late Cretaceous Montana, USA, this centrosaur was first described in 2015 as a possible species of Avaceratops. However, this past year it was finally thoroughly described and found to represent a new genus and species: Furcatoceratops elucidans. Because of the disarticulated state of the fossil’s skull and skeleton, it is expected to be helpful in further study of ceratopsid osteology.

An early centrosaurine, Furcatoceratops is closely related to Nasutoceratops (who was originally going to go on this year’s list before Furcatoceratops was described!) Like other Centrosaurines, it likely ate tough low-lying plant material, and may have also used its sharp beak to scavenge. The Judith River Formation where Furcatoceratops was found seems to have had a very diverse community of ceratopsids, such as Avaceratops, Medusaceratops, Spiclypeus, and Judiceratops. It would have also shared its environment with the hadrosaurs Brachylophosaurus, Corythosaurus, and Probrachylophosaurus, as well as the ankylosaur Zuul. Furcatoceratops would have been preyed on by the tyrannosaurids Daspletosaurus and Gorgosaurus, as well as the giant alligatoroid Deinosuchus (who we will be seeing very soon).

happened last week, but a new ceratopsid was described furcatoceratops elucidans from the judith river formation! it would have lived alongside other dinosaurs such as: Daspletosaurus, Medusaceratops, Brachylophosaurus, Zuul, and others, and non dinosaur fauna, such as Deinosuchus or Basilemys
