I saw your post about Japanese-American characters being portrayed as inaccurate in reference to half-supernatural characters in anime. Some people have said the same thing about mentally ill characters, do you think it's the same-ish or is it a reach?
I think this is similar in some ways! Those who have mental illnesses, who are not cis gendered, who are half Japanese, or even considered to be another ethnicity all together suffer from being considered the “other”. Anyone who isn’t the majority can suffer from otherisim, though of course this does not strictly happen in Japanese media. It is also hard to “measure” the negativity and damage these characters cause due to not being Japanese in Japan but Japanese in America. Meaning that some characters I may think to be damaging towards a minority may actually be seen as some what progressive to that minority in Japan. Getting back on topic; there is a lot of different elements and factors that go into the representation of mental illness in Japanese and world media than what go into representation of Half Japanese characters. That being said I do believe that characters with mental illness in Anime do get cast as supernatural, mysterious, or mystical. Currently I can’t think of any specific characters or mental illnesses, but one medical condition that comes to mind is albinism. The white haired red eyed character design is very popular in anime. Now of course just because a character is designed in this way does not mean they are albino. Anime is known to not stick to conventional eye color or hair color, but this inspiration must have come from somewhere right? Plus, there have been characters that straight out are labeled Albino. Typically these albino characters do not struggle from their condition and instead have some kind of magical ability. They also tend to end up being the cold hearted killer and the stereotypes go on. I guess to sum it all up is that if you are considered to be an “other” you probably will be represented in Japanese media in some mystical or stereotypical way. This of course is not only true to Japan. This happens all the time in American media too. If you can think of any character examples who have mental illness in anime I would love it if you let me know about them!
another reason why it takes years is because a psychologist does not spend twenty four hours with you. Usually, or at least where I come from, a psychologist works with the client to make a diagnosis. Usually they show the client what they come up with but a client can reject that diagnosis if it does not make sense to them and can request a new one or just say i think I have x.
Sorry for only just publishing this!
Dx can take so many years depending on the person or disorder
as for harry potter girl-on-girl hate the books were also written during a time where maybe feminism and girls supporting girls wasnt exactly taking off! also jkr did say that some girl characters were based on girls who bullied her so she let her resentment kinda show - was still a sucky thing.
good point on the timing!
lol yeah a lot of the post-story stuff jk has put out in the world have been frustrating to say the least . . .

cool, which one should I watch? Oh and there isn't a terminal illness storyline is there?
I would start with Boys and Girls in the City or the new one Opening New Doors (both on Netflix.) There’s an original series that only aired in Japan called Boys and Girls Next Door that I haven’t seen but apparently you can find it subbed online somewhere. And no, not that I can recall?
with regards to the voice acting role there were sme people who said that the voice actors are never given a vclue as to what race the character is and that voice casting agents should be held accountable
I know that. We reblogged a post talking about that very thing.

some people have asked to use the im white tag so that they will let rebloggers know the person in question is not a POC and that what they're reblogging is stuff they don't have first hand exp about
I get that. However, I am personally bothered by the concept of the “I’m white” tag because, frankly, I think white people could do with some silent contemplation, just like I wish white people would engage in more quiet activism i.e. shutting down racism amongst each other and NOT talking about it to their non-white friends later.
I don’t put “I’m Arab” in tags calling out Arabization, because I don’t need to. My silent contemplation, my quiet unlearning and unsolicited actions to support its victims and to overthrow this system is what is needed. Me advertising my ethnicity while I do it is not.
It’s also because, and this is just a personal opinion, I think white people sometimes feel the need to advertise their whiteness based on the perception that POC advertise nonwhiteness. Except we really don’t. Not a lot of us anyway.
We “advertise” our races/ethnicities/religions in the sense that some things white people can do on here - sharing selfies, showing off white ocs, sharing life stories - is innocuous, but for us, it’s political and advertisement, perceived as such because nonwhiteness by itself is seen as deviant, different, and something you MUST pay attention to.

Another idea for that anon to do there are some short horror movies found on Youtube one of them I believe was called Deleted (it was both scary and kind of sweet), googling also asian short horror film might be a term to use as I've seen it use. I've seen a lot of these indie short horror film and have seen a lot of asian rep! I think there's also a new buzzfeed 'horror/investigating' show featuring an asian male lead.
Hi! Thanks for the heads up! I’ve found the Deleted short. Have not watched it yet, but thanks for the rec, I’ll check it out as soon, as I have time. :) I’ve heard about Buzzfeed Unsolved and Ryan Bergara, but haven’t seen it.
There are a lot of great Asian horror films and shorts out there, but since this blog is focused on Western film / tv and representation of Asian Diaspora filmmakers / actors, it kind of limits the search...
