Tree House Ch 1 Part 2
Tree House, Ch 1 Pt 1
Mom and Dad are away. Out on a date, probably watching a romantic comedy Mom's been itching to see. Dad doesn't like the movies Mom likes, but he's likely sat beside her faking a laugh whenever she looks at him with her lips pulled in a wide grin, her eyes crinkling at the corners. I suppose that's love. You have to do a little bit of comprimising. Even if it's having to sit through something you really really hate. I'm in my room working on a project. It isn't for school, I don't like school, no. I'm doing research about the people in my neighborhood. Mr. Jones who lives across us keeps the lights in the dining area on. I think it's a terrible waste of energy. Yesterday, however, he turned them off. It's the first time he's done that for the 13 years we've lived across each other. He's been a bit down lately, and he's begun to leave his house 14 minutes and 37 seconds later than he normally does. I wonder if something happened. I need to do more research to form a logical hypothesis. I should call James. I hurry down the stairs, not bothering to shut my door and immediately dial his house number. It rings four times before someone picks it up. "James, Mr. Jones turned off the lights." He stays silent for a second. Two seconds. Three seconds. I tap my pointing finger restlessly on the table. "Ed, is this you? Why are you calling me on the tel? It's 2015, nobody uses these anymore." I ignore that last bit. It's not important. "Do you think something's happened?" "Something's happened with what?" A sigh leaves my lips. "With Mr. Jones. He turned off the lights in the dining room." "So what if he did?" "He never does. I think something catastrophic's happened is why he turned them off yesterday. Do you think someone in the family passed away?" "Ed, are you spying on your neighbor?" James is frustrating to talk to. He isn't answering my questions. "You're not helping, James." "You so are, you creep." I can hear the laughter in his voice. This isn't a laughing matter, I have to know why the lights are off. He pauses. "Wait, give me info on Jessica, does she have a boyfriend?" Who's Jessica? "I don't know who that is." "Dude, she lives right next to you. She's the hot chick who lives next door, how can you not know her?" I hang up the phone and run up backstairs to my room. Upon investigation via looking out the window with my binoculars, I've come to the conclusion that our nextdoor neighbor is a girl with long, red hair who's currently wearing plaid. I assume that's her. The person living on the other side of our house doesn't look like a Jessica. Unless James was talking about a 50-year-old lady. Returning the binoculars to my top drawer, I run back downstairs and press redial on the phone. "Does Jessica have red ha-" Oh, the phone is still ringing. "Hel-" "Does Jessica have red hair?" I repeat. He stays silent once again. What is with James and taking three seconds to answer? "Ed, you prick, why'd you hang up on me?" He has a thing for answering my questions with irrelevant questions. But since he's my best friend, I put up with it. "I went to confirm whether or not I lived next to a Jessica." "You do, I've seen her whenever I come by yours. Does she have a boyfriend or not?" "How would I know, do you want me to go ask her?" I start to lower the phone, but I hear James' frantic yelling to make me stop. I press the phone back to my ear. "Don't ask her you bloody idiot. Have you seen her with a guy?" Considering I only became aware of her existence a few minutes ago, I don't think I'm in any position to be aware of that fact. I did, however, not see her with a guy, so that might qualify as a good enough answer. "She isn't with anyone." James chuckles in delight. I can imagine him punching the air in victory. He does it whenever he wins in a video game. "Thanks, Ed." He says, remembering himself. "I've got my chance." I hang up.
