Rambling about Fairies - Manga Chapter 144

I really like how this, and the other big moves she uses, continues to use this casting pose. It’s so celestial, with divine connotations, especially since she’s on her knees arms spread out to receive, and the chant before it sounds like a prayer. 

Usually in religion we pray looking down, but looking up is common when worshipping. She’s not asking for help from the stars-- she is expressing reverence and adoration for the celestial beings above, and they are responding with all their grace.

That’s what makes this scene breathtaking.

It’s pretty easy to forget, but Chopper is a literal child in this flashback. And by child, I mean nine years old (in human years). If Chopper lived in the United States, he’d be in the 3rd grade.  

Kids are already gullible enough, but it’s not like Chopper’s read a lot of books or had much of an education. He was completely dependent on Hiliruk for everything he knew. 

I think we all know a story of a kid who’s done something incredibly stupid simply because they didn’t know any better, with tragic results. But in medicine ignorance kills people, and that’s a pretty bitter pill for Chopper to have to swallow

When Sebastian was attacked by Lizzy at the Sphere, he asked why she was doing this and she reply with a "something you would never understand". Indeed, he can't understand love/feelings. How did she know though? Is she aware of his true nature? Plus, the same reply was repeated by UT when Seb asked about him and the P. family. So if 2+2=4 ...I guess UT was talking about love too xD tysm for reading, have a nice day :*

Hello! I’m doing well, thank you, I hope you are doing fine as well! Also… warning, this is going to be long. As usual.

That scene you mentioned, I couldn’t find it, at first. Only the unofficial/fan translation has the “something you would never understand” part. It’s this one.

In the official translation she says only “You dare ask? How should I know?” Or something like that.  Now which one is the right translation… well! I did some digging and found the sentence in Japanese, and, although I can’t put the link to the original post which explains it all very well (it’s one of @/ akumadeenglish’s wonderful posts) both translations are possible. So, in that sentence, she could be referring to either of them, herself or Sebastian. However, that still doesn’t change things for me. I don’t think she knows that Sebastian is, actually, a demon. She didn’t have such a strong reaction to him at the cult, nor at the mansion (one that would hint she knows anything). Also, somebody would’ve had to tell her that (Blavat), but I doubt he did. Elizabeth just seems deeply confused at the moment.

It seems to me that Elizabeth, when she saw Real Ciel at the cult the first time, literally shattered. Exactly the way it’s portrayed here.

She got in a sort of shock, sort of panic, a mix between heartbreak, disappointment, confusion, guilt, terror, all sorts of feelings, and she hasn’t been able to truly process much of what’s happened since then. I guess. Even if Blavat told her some lies, I don’t think he mentioned Sebastian’s true nature.

When her brother asked her why she didn’t tell people Ciel was alive, she went back to the moment when she first saw real Ciel at the cult. It looks to me like she’s stuck in that moment and in the feelings it brought with it. It doesn’t look like there was a shock stronger than that, so I’d say she doesn’t know he is a demon, for now at least.

However, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t sense something wrong with him. There’s a few things she said that I will always remember.

There’s a fantastic thing going on here. She associates mourning clothes, depressive mood, death with Sebastian. Unconsciously, of course. She used the same adjective, jet-black, to describe Sebastian. “Ciel suddenly returned with a butler clothed black as jet.” This was a wonderful way to describe things, I really, really like it.

Apart from it simply being the writer’s intention, Elizabeth also has Phantomhive blood, she must be sensing something, unconsciously (like the twins, Vincent, her mother, etc). But I don’t think she knows he’s a demon yet, she hasn’t been told that yet.

Although what she said could parallel what Undertaker said on multiple occasions, it’s different. She, herself, doesn’t know what to do. She doesn’t understand much either, it seems. But I do think Undertaker was implying ‘Love, you can’t understand love’ when he told Sebastian he’d never understand/they have different goals.

Hairy backgrounds

While looking for pics of Gregory Violet with a chain of hair lockets (ch113), I found a panel of our earl with swirls of hair in the background. He’s just woken up from being drugged at Sphere Music Hall.

That immediately reminded me of Lizzie in ch144, when she’s talking about her confusion over her feelings for our earl.

Maybe this swirling hair pattern is supposed to express feeling “fuzzy-brained”, being seriously confused....
