ChaeYu with Mina in Toronto, Canada
2 July 2023
Source: Instagram (thinkaboutzu, chaeyo.0, and mina_sr_my)
Tzuyu: Guess what?
Chaeyoung: What?
Tzuyu: I'm getting married!
Chaeyoung: Oh, that's great! Who are you-?
Tzuyu, slamming down a marriage certificate: It's you, sign here.
okay here me out. i was working on other things and then came across something on ao3 and the author was talking about how the older members of twice rarely are baby and i... made this. for context, mina and jihyo are tzuyu (16), nayeon (8), and sana’s (4) parents and jeongyeon is dahyun (18), chaeyoung (16), and momo’s (6) mom. idk why my little adhd monkey brain came up with this or how/why it ended up so long. i meant to post it the day i started it and it’s been like four days now oops. anyway, enjoy! (cut because this thing is LONG)
Tzuyu had the best family ever. Her mom was the sweetest person she had ever met, and she always understood Tzuyu better than she understood herself. She was calm, and she always understood if Tzuyu needed alone time. She could tell when Tzuyu was upset, even if Tzuyu never even mentioned it. And her mama? She was the coolest person Tzuyu had ever met. Ever since she was young, she always was able to carry a certain amount of pride that came from being the Park Jihyo’s child. People at school would always tell her how cool her mama was and how awesome it must be to be her child, and while Tzuyu wasn’t a particularly vain person, she couldn’t help the swell of pride within her. Her parents were the best, and she was so happy they had adopted her all those years ago. Tzuyu had the family she had always dreamed of, and she would never not be thankful to her parents for letting them be a family together. “Tzuyu Unnie! Play with me!”
“No! Play with me!” Okay, maybe just her parents were the best. Her sisters were not even close. “I’m busy.” Tzuyu groaned. Really, her parents should have stopped at her. She still remembered her parents sitting her down at age seven, asking her what she thought about being a big sister. At the time, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Dahyun was a big sister, and Dahyun was the second coolest person in the world, next to her mama of course. Her mama was also a big sister, and Tzuyu thought maybe that all the best people were. Young Tzuyu wanted to be just like her heroes, so she said that would be a good idea. She was a fool. A stupid, young fool.
“Please?” “Nayeon, I'm trying to do my homework.” Tzuyu shook Nayeon’s arm off as her sister tugged on it.
“You promised you would play with me.” Nayeon pouted.
“Me too!” Sana added from Tzuyu’s other side. “Well then why don’t you two play together?” Tzuyu rolled her eyes.
“Cause I’m mad at Sana!”
“Nayeon Unnie is mean!” Both of them said at the same time.
“Well, go bother mom. I’m busy.” “But you promised.” “I promised you nothing Nayeon.” Tzuyu was pretty sure Nayeon was the devil incarnate. She’s convinced that Nayeon has been plotting her downfall since she was a baby and Tzuyu almost dropped her. Tzuyu couldn’t help it, she was eight and had never held a baby before. But she’s convinced that Nayeon has never let it go. She’s done just about everything; thrown up on Tzuyu, peed on Tzuyu’s bed (“it was an accident. she’s three, she’s learning” her moms would argue, but Tzuyu is convinced Nayeon did it on purpose), cried whenever Tzuyu told her no. Nayeon was a menace. And her parents knew it, they had to know it. They just, wouldn’t admit it. “You did.” “Nayeon, go do your homework.” Tzuyu rolled her eyes. “You're not my mom.” “I’m not, but I can tell mom you are trying to play before doing your homework.” Nayeon got quiet at that, letting go of Tzuyu and slowly slinking away.
“Play with me?” Tzuyu knew not to look at Sana. The puppy dog eyes were dangerous, and Tzuyu was convinced if Sana played her cards right, she could get just about anything she wanted. If Nayeon was a spawn of satan, Sana was an innocent puppy. She had a lot of energy, a lot, but she also did not mean anyone harm. If Nayeon was chaotic evil, Sana was chaotic good. Well, maybe chaotic neutral. She would sometimes cause harm anyway, but it really was an accident. Tzuyu hadn’t actually been on board when her parents approached her and Nayeon about having Sana. At the time, Nayeon was four and thought it would be a wonderful idea to not be the youngest anymore. Tzuyu, however, was not thrilled at the prospect. Nayeon was already a lot and Tzuyu did not want to make it worse. But, she felt that everyone else was on board with it, and she didn’t want to be that person. So, she reluctantly agreed that their family should get another member. And really, she would take Sana over Nayeon’s pure untamed chaos practically any day, but Sana was still young enough she couldn’t understand what alone time was or that people didn’t want to be hugged twenty four seven.
“Sana, I’m doing homework.” “Can I sit?” Sana pointed to Tzuyu’s lap.
“I need to finish this Sana.” “Chaeyoung Unnie would let me sit.” “Well, she’s not here is she?” Okay, Tzuyu could have been a bit nicer. Sana was only four years old. Tzuyu was trying to get this done. Her mom had promised that if she finished all of her homework early, they could play minecraft together.
“No…” Tzuyu could hear the pout in Sana’s voice. “Sana…” Tzuyu sighed, finally turning to see her sister. Sana had tears in her eyes as she gazed up at Tzuyu. “I’m-”
“Oh Sana, I told you not to bother your sister.” Tzuyu sighed in relief when she heard her mom’s voice.
“Mommy.” Sana sniffled, opening her arms for Mina. Mina picked her up, looking more than a little confused. “Tzuyu Unnie wasn’t letting me sit.” “I told you she was doing homework.” Mina sighed. “Tzuyu, I’m sorry. Sana, why don’t you help me make dinner?” Really, Tzuyu had the best mom in the universe.
“Okay!” Sana and Nayeon had that in common, they were upset one second and perfectly happy the next. Kids. Tzuyu couldn’t even begin to understand them.
“Mom! Can I have help with my homework?” Nayeon ran into the room with a piece of paper in one hand and a bright blue pen in her other hand.
“I need to make dinner Yeonie.” Mina sighed. “Maybe your big sister can help?”
“Okay!” Tzuyu groaned in response. “Thanks Tzuyu,” Mina smiled at Tzuyu. “Dinner should be ready in a bit, okay?” “Fine.” Tzuyu sighed. Really, her parents should have stopped at her.
xx
“At least they are cute?” Tzuyu rolled her eyes as Chaeyoung rolled onto her stomach. The other girl had already finished her homework, but since Tzuyu had decided it would be a good idea to take advanced math. She really wished she had listened to Dahyun when she said it wasn’t a good idea.
“They are not cute.” Tzuyu rolled her eyes. “You're lucky you only have one younger sibling.” “Momo is chill. Most of her energy is gone after dance class, and she’s always been more close with Dahyun Unnie anyway.” Tzuyu wished her sisters were more like Momo. Momo was two years older than Sana, and while she also had a lot of energy, it was usually gone by the time her dance class was over. Her aunt had suggested they put Sana in the same class to run out some of her energy, but it seemed Sana’s energy was limitless. Tzuyu wondered where she got it from, because she definitely did not get it from Mina. “How is Dahyun Unnie?” “Mom went to visit her this weekend. She complained cause she said the whole reason she wanted to live in the dorm was to be away from home. But that sap misses us. She calls like every other day.” Chaeyoung rolled her eyes. “I think she’s making friends though.” “That’s good. Any idea when she’s coming home?” Tzuyu asked.
“Probably not until winter break.” Chaeyoung shrugged, opening up a comic book she found on Tzuyu’s bedside table. Tzuyu wasn’t actually a huge fan of comics, but she knew Chaeyoung loved them. She tried to always keep at least a couple in her room at a time, for days like today. “Have you thought about college at all?” “I have some ideas.” Tzuyu shrugged. “I think I want to apply to pre-vet.” “Oh yeah?” Chaeyoung hummed. “I haven’t thought about it at all.” Tzuyu always admired that about Chaeyoung, she was always so calm about everything. Tzuyu always had to have a plan for everything, and a backup plan, and a backup backup plan. She couldn’t be nearly as calm about decisions as Chaeyoung was. “Maybe I’ll apply to art school? Or maybe literature? Poetry is cool. Who knows though.” “I mean, you still have a lot of time.” Tzuyu shrugged, her math homework forgotten as she turned to see Chaeyong. She couldn’t help the little flutter her heart did seeing Chaeyoung lying so calmly in her bed. Tzuyu was big on personal space, and the only person she really truly didn’t mind being in her most personal spaces was Chaeyoung. Yes her moms could come in every once in a while, and her sisters came in regardless of what Tzuyu did, but Chaeyoung was the only person in Tzuyu’s mind who truly had a free pass.
“My mom doesn’t seem to think so.” Chaeyoung rolled her eyes. “I love her, but she could calm down sometimes.” Chaeyoung sat up, pulling one of the hair bands out of her messy braids. Chaeyoung had just dyed her hair black, and Tzuyu couldn’t help but think it looked amazing on her. It reminded her of a much younger Chaeyoung, one she used to follow without a doubt in her mind. It reminded her of the first time she met Chaeyoung, she was just a scared little kid back then, but even so she couldn’t help but be drawn in by Chaeyoung’s playful smile and beautiful energy. An energy that screamed for adventure, but also craved the quiet moments in between bursts of excitement. An energy that led to Chaeyoung’s passion. Chaeyoung loved to create. She loved to make something tangible, something unique. She loved to create clothes, create grandiose works of art no words could begin to explain, and she loved to create beautiful words that had Tzuyu thinking for months after reading them. Tzuyu always had her breath taken away when she saw one of Chaeyoung’s creations. Chaeyoung was free. Free from anxiety, free from fear. She was able to express herself wholly and beautifully, and Tzuyu just couldn’t help but admire the person she was lucky enough to call her best friend.
“Your mom just wants what's best for you.” “I know. I’ll figure it out eventually right?” Chaeyoung smiled and Tzuyu found herself wanting to fall into that charming smile she loved with every fiber of her being. “You done?” “I'm never done.” Tzuyu sighed. “After I do one homework, there’s another textbook reading and then there’s another homework and then there’s a quiz to study for- and it feels like the cycle is never going to end.”
“Well, then why don’t we take a break?” Chaeyoung smiled. “We could go see a movie. I know you’ve been dying to see that one by that actor you like.” “I mean, I still have like an entire page left and-”
“Come on. Your homework isn’t going to go anywhere. Unless Nayeon like decides to eat it or something, but I don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon. Would be a funny story to tell your teacher though.” Chaeyoung giggled. Nayeon had eaten a piece of Tzuyu’s homework once, a long time ago. Tzuyu was only nine at the time, and remembers feeling very frustrated with her sister. Her parents told her Nayeon was just teething and they were sorry and they would tell her teacher, but nothing made up for the annoyance Tzuyu felt. “You still have some allowance left right? Let’s go to the movies. You won’t have to think about your math homework for the next three hours and my mom won’t be able to force me to stare at college applications.” “Okay.” Tzuyu put her pencil down. “Let’s go.” xx
Tzuyu was convinced she and Chaeyoung were foils of one another. Impulsivity made Chaeyoung thrive, it made Tzuyu feel weak. Creativity was something that Chaeyoung experienced freely, Tzuyu felt she was living inside the lines drawn by some invisible force not known to her. Words flowed freely and beautifully from Chaeyoung’s mouth, Tzuyu always felt like she lacked the proper words to express her feelings. Loving was something that came easy to Chaeyoung, Tzuyu found herself incapable of loving without the thought of fear. While Tzuyu lived to the standards other people held her too, Chaeyoung lived to her own passion.
Really, she had no clue how they were even able to stay friends.
But also, at the same time, in some way, it made perfect sense they were drawn to each other. Chaeyoung had what Tzuyu lacked, and Tzuyu had what Chaeyoung lacked. They both held deep admiration for the other, and Tzuyu supposes it was only a matter of time before that appreciation blossomed into something more than just the simple thought of friendship. “I think I’m going to get a tattoo.” Tzuyu turned to Chaeyoung at that, genuinely surprised for a moment. They were up on Tzuyu’s roof, staring at the stars like they had since they were tall enough to climb up. The stars were always beautiful, but tonight they were especially gorgeous. They sparkled with light of possibility and beauty, and Tzuyu swore Chaeyoung’s eyes were made of the light of the thousands of stars burning out billions of lightyears away. “Really? I’m surprised your mom is letting you.” “Well, not now. When I’m eighteen.” Chaeyoung giggled. Really, Tzuyu shouldn’t be shocked by this. Chaeyoung had been doodling all over her body since she was a kid. Tzuyu had heard all the scoldings her mother had given her after school, but it never seemed to deter Chaeyoung from taking out a marker and doodling something somewhere on her body. “My mom isn’t the biggest fan, but she said if I want one by the time I’m eighteen, I could get one.”
“What were you thinking of getting?” “I’m between a few things.” Tzuyu felt her heart flutter as Chaeyoung intertwined their hands. “Maybe some of my favorite doodles, or maybe something a little deeper. I thought about getting something to represent my family, and maybe I’ll do that later. Right now, I’m leaning towards something more simple though.” Chaeyoung’s fingers tightened over Tzuyu’s as she locked up at the stars. Tzuyu was convinced there was nothing more beautiful than this. “I was thinking of getting a small puppy. Like the one you used to draw in your notebook as a kid.” “What? Oh no that was just a little mindless doodle. You should get something more meaningful as your first tattoo-”
“But it is meaningful.” Chaeyoung interrupted. “It’s the first thing my best friend ever drew for me.” Tzuyu’s heart felt like it was going to beat out of it’s chest. No wonder Dahyun was always teasing her about being a simp. “It’s special. I want to remember it forever.” “I don’t even remember how I used to draw it anymore.”
“That’s okay.” Chaeyoung smiled at her. “I still have one you drew for me when we were in second grade.” “You still have that? That was so long ago.” “I know.” Chaeyoung giggled. “But if you think I’m ever going to part with it, you're not as smart as I thought Park-Myoui Tzuyu.”
Tzuyu hated how fast her heart was beating.
xx
“Ow fu- Sana!” Tzuyu groaned, happy she had held herself back from cursing as pain shot through her arm.
“What? Did it hurt?” Sana asked innocently.
“Yeah! You just bit me!” Tzuyu groaned.
“What just happened?” Tzuyu was so happy Jihyo was home.
“Your daughter bit me.” Tzuyu muttered as she looked at the bite mark. Thankfully, it didn’t look like it was very deep.
“What?! Sana, you know we do not bite people. Especially if it’s our sister.” Jihyo grabbed Tzuyu’s arm and inspected the wound, sighing in relief it didn’t look very bad.
“But I was just showing her I love her.” Both Tzuyu and Jihyo looked at her confused. “Mama was doing the same thing for mommy earlier.” Jihyo’s face flushed red and Tzuyu couldn’t fight the blush rushing to her cheeks as well.
“I uh-” Jihyo stuttered. “I wasn’t biting her, I was kissing her.” “She had a red spot, like this.” Sana pointed to Tzuyu’s arm. “And you said it was cause you love her.” “Okay Sana! Who’s ready for a bath?” Jihyo tried to change the subject, not able to look at Tzuyu or Sana.
“Tzuyu Unnie.” Tzuyu looked at Sana at the use of her name. “You should bite Chaeyoung Unnie too. To show her you love her.”
“Ohhh Tzuyu Unnie loves Chaeyoung Unnie.” Tzuyu wasn’t normally one for violence, but she had never wanted Nayeon to shut up more.
“You like Chaeyoung?” Her mama gave her an amused look.
“I do not!” Tzuyu’s face was bright red under Jihyo and Nayeon’s teasing looks. “You do too. You want to marry her.” Nayeon teased. “Shut up!”
Tzuyu hated her family so much.
xx
Tzuyu didn’t know how long she had loved Chaeyoung for. She wanted to say something romantic like she had been in love since they had first met, but really, that wasn’t true. Tzuyu wasn’t in love with Chaeyoung at first, just intrigued. She had been with Mina and Jihyo for just over three months, and Chaeyoung was the first person her own age they introduced her to. It wasn’t some grand meeting, or some life changing event. It was just a random Thursday in July.
Tzuyu thinks it may have started when they were eight. Tzuyu was getting teased by some of the boys in their class because she was taller than most of the other kids, and she wasn’t very good at standing up for herself. Chaeyoung had been the one to do it, charging in and shouting at the other kids to shut up.
Or maybe it started when Chaeyoung kissed her. They were eleven at the time, and they were trying to act like the big kids. Big kids kissed, so Chaeyoung thought they should kiss too. It was only a one time thing, but six years later, Tzuyu still remembered the softness of Chaeyoung’s lips contrasted with the suffocatingly sweet taste of artificial strawberry from her lip gloss.
Tzuyu wasn’t sure, but whatever caused it, she knew she was hopelessly in love with her best friend. And she also know how royally fucked she was.
xx
“Thank you for agreeing to watch the kids tonight.” Tzuyu nodded, distracted by the way Sana was trying to climb her like a jungle gym and the way Chaeyoung seemed to be encouraging her. “I know this was typically Dahyun’s thing.”
“It’s no problem Aunt Jihyo.” Chaeyoung smiled. That damn smile. Tzuyu would agree to anything if Chaeyoung smiled at her like that.
“You remember all of our phone numbers? Phone all charged?” Jeongyeon asked Chaeyoung as she adjusted the sweater Momo was wearing. Momo groaned before running over to Nayeon. “Of course.” Chaeyoung rolled her eyes. “And when is Momo and Nayeon’s bedtime?” “Nine normally, nine thirty if they are good.” Chaeyoung answered. Tzuyu made eye contact with Mina, who shot her a small smile. Her and Mina had never really needed words to communicate, side looks and careful smiles were enough for the two to understand each other.
“And when is Sana's?” Jihyo asked, gently grabbing Sana off of Tzuyu and holding her in her arms.
“Eight.” Tzuyu answered.
“Perfect. We should be back by ten. Ten thirty at the latest.” Jihyo smiled at both of them. “Goodbye Sana.” Jihyo gave Sana a kiss on the cheek, and Sana giggled and whined for more. Tzuyu always thought it was a little crazy how Sana turned out to be the biggest affection monster on the planet. Mina liked affection, sure, but she wasn’t very forward with it. She liked holding one of their hands or short hugs before parting. Little things like that. And Jihyo straight up hated it. Tzuyu understood from a young age Jihyo was not the type of parent to be raining kisses all over her when she was proud of her. Jihyo showed her pride in other ways, but physical touch was not one of them. And really, Tzuyu didn't mind. Being affectionate all the time felt suffocating, and she liked the space her parents always gave her. Nayeon liked affection more than Tzuyu, but she still wasn’t clingy. Nayeon didn’t care if she was or wasn’t getting physical affection, the girl just wanted attention. And really, that was something Nayeon excelled at. If she walked into a room, everyone just knew she was there. Nayeon’s presence filled the room, and even if it pained Tzuyu to admit it, she did admire Nayeon’s ability to fill a room, even at her young age. Sana was similar in that sense, but the way she made herself known was by running to all of them and talking. In a family of introverts, Sana was the extravert. (Okay, Tzuyu did not believe Nayeon was an introvert. In her own words she was “the most popular kid in third grade.” But according to an online quiz, she was an introvert. But Sana was a lot more intense about her extraversion) Sana felt the need to talk to everyone, no matter if they wanted to speak to her or not. Mina and Jihyo would try to hold her in check, but no matter where they went, there was a good chance Sana would end the night friends with some stranger and they would bond over the weirdest things like how they have a favorite duck at the park or that they had the same favorite cartoon character. Part of Tzuyu knew it was her age, but another part of her suspected this was a trait Sana was going to hold onto. Another thing about Sana was her need for physical affection. Sana needed kisses, she needed hugs, she needed reassurance. Nayeon needed to talk to someone every day, but Sana needed to hug someone. Tzuyu was sure the two would go crazy if they ever had to go a day without them.
“Sana, we’re going now.” Mina announced, kissing Sana once on the forehead before Jihyo let her down. “Bye girls, be good.” Tzuyu let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding when the door shut. Sana was chatting with Chaeyoung, who was pretending to be interested, and Nayeon and Momo were having their own little conversation. Nayeon and Sana were both convinced Momo was their long lost sister from a past life. Anytime Momo was over, the two would immediately run to her and not leave her side until one of the adults separated them. Tzuyu actually didn't mind, it gave Nayeon and Sana someone else to direct their energy towards.
“So, you want to order a pizza?” Chaeyoung turned to Tzuyu. “You think the five of us can agree on a pizza topping?” Tzuyu eyed the three girls, who were definitely planning something. Tzuyu knew her own little sisters well enough to know whispering was never a good thing.
“I think we can get a pepperoni pizza.” Chaeyoung shrugged. “It may be a little plain, but it works.” “Yeah sure. Sounds easy. Should we get two? They can eat a lot.”
“I mean, they should be fine. And if they are still hungry, their average age is six they can fend for themselves.” Chaeyoung shrugged. “No, they cannot-” “Tzuyu Unnie!” Sana interrupted their conversation. “Yes Sana?” Tzuyu turned to her sister. “Can we have ramen for dinner?” “No, we were going to get pizza.” Tzuyu nodded.
“Pizza? Can we get ham?!” Nayeon asked.
“No no can we get corn?” Momo asked. “Ew. No ham.” Nayeon crinkled her face in disgust. “I want ham. And chili sauce.” “We are getting pepperoni.” Tzuyu nodded.
“But I want ham!” “I want ramen.” Sana pouted. “Nayeon no ham. Sana, we are having pizza.” Sana pouted, but nodded. “Chaeyoung unnie, can we get soda too?” Momo asked.
“Sure. Each of you can have one.” “Yay!” The girls all ran off after that, and Tzuyu could hear their feet on the stairs. They were probably going to Nayeon’s room, the girl practically held their dog hostage in there. Tzuyu felt bad for the poor thing. Whenever Nayeon was away, she always gave the dog lots of attention.
“You know sugar makes them crazy.” “I like being the fun Unnie.” Chaeyoung shrugged. “Dahyun Unnie let me get soda when we got pizza. That was like, the highlight of my week.” “You're only two years younger than her, it’s a bit different when they are this young. I’m just speaking from experience, fun Unnie usually ends up locked in a closet.” Tzuyu rolled her eyes at the memory. “Or maybe that’s just part of living with Nayeon.”
“Nah, the kids will be fine. Nayeon has grown out of that.” “I doubt it.” “You’ll see.” Chaeyoung giggled. “It will be fine.” Tzuyu hated the part of her that immediately caved into Chaeyoung’s words.
xx
Tzuyu hated the look on Nayeon’s face throughout dinner. She was eyeing her a little too suspiciously for Tzuyu’s liking. And from the way Sana and Momo were giggling, they were in on whatever Nayeon was planning. But Chaeyoung seemed to not be worried, so Tzuyu tried her best to not be worried either.
After dinner, they let the girls get their energy out playing in the backyard. Tzuyu figured they couldn’t break anything if they were out there. However, she underestimated the power of kids when they were hyper, and now she was going to have to explain to her mom that her flowers were ruined and that Sana had crushed her cactus. Thankfully, it was one of the smaller ones, and it wasn’t too hard to get the splitters out of her fingers. Tzuyu was more worried for the plant than for Sana.
After banning the kids from even looking at the garden, they seemed to be on their way. Sana eagerly showed off all of her hello kitty bandaids to Momo and Nayeon somehow convinced the two of them to resume their game of tag. Tzuyu could understand how Chaeyoung got roped in, but how she did too was beyond her. But here she was, being chased across their small yard with Nayeon hot on her tail. For being eight, and claiming to hate running, Nayeon was pretty fast. Tzuyu made a glance behind her when she reached the fence, she was a lot taller than Nayeon so outrunning her should be easy, but she knew her sister was just going to try and pin her into one of the fence corners. So, Tzuyu turned the other way. However, she wasn’t paying enough attention to what was in front of her, and not long after she ended up colliding with something.
“Ow…” Tzuyu groaned as she fell to the ground. It took her a moment to regain her bearings, and she was surprised to see Chaeyoung’s face so close to her.
“Hey pretty girl.” Tzuyu wanted to wipe that stupidly adorable smirk off Chaeyoung’s face. She knew Chaeyoung was teasing her, she had done this before. She just also couldn’t help the blush that came to her face. “Shut up.” Tzuyu groaned.
“Ohhh Chaeyoung Unnie and Tzuyu Unnie are going to kiss.” Tzuyu immediately got off of Chaeyoung at that. “Get back here Nayeon!” Nayeon giggled and ran away, hiding behind Momo.
“Momo Tzuyu Unnie is being mean to me.” “Huh?” Momo looked up from where she was playing with the grass.
“Momo, can you move two steps to the left?” “Oh sure.” Momo moved just fast enough for Tzuyu to grab Nayeon by the waist. “Okay, fun’s over.” Tzuyu swung Nayeon over her shoulder.
“Can we keep playing?” Sana asked from the other side of the lawn.
“No, we don’t want anyone else to get hurt. Chaeyoung Unnie could have been seriously hurt.” “Please?” “Sana, that isn’t going to work.” Tzuyu looked away from her sister. “Come on, inside. It’s getting dark.”
Tzuyu really shouldn’t have been shocked that Sana still managed to hurt herself on the walk inside. This time, she was crying as her chin bled from where it had hit the ground, and Chaeyoung was the one to step in, holding Sana in her arms while Tzuyu went to get the bandaids. “Hey Sana,” Chaeyoung gently got Sana’s attention. “I got your nose.” Tzuyu couldn’t help but smile at the scene of Chaeyoung with Sana. “No you don’t.” Sana pouted. “My nose is right here.” “Nope, it’s mine.” Chaeyoung nodded, doing the same thing again. Sana giggled the second time, and Chaeyoung’s expression softened. “See, you're okay.”
“Hurts.” “I know, but Tzuyu Unnie has the bandaids you like. And see, you're fine.” Sana turned to Tzuyu, who was staring at the two of them. “R-right.” Tzuyu’s trance was broken. She was happy Momo and Nayeon seemed preoccupied playing with Momo’s switch. Tzuyu quickly disinfected Sana’s chin before putting on a bandaid. “Now a kiss.” Sana pouted.
“No, you're okay.” Tzuyu nodded.
“Dahyun Unnie would give me a kiss.” “Well, you can ask mom for one tomorrow.” “I’ll give you a kiss.” Chaeyoung grinned, giving Sana a quick kiss on the chin. “There, all better.” Sana giggled at the kiss, wiggling around for Chaeyoung to let her down. “Now you should kiss Tzuyu Unnie too, her lips have a boo boo.” “Sana!” Sana was already running off before Tzuyu could scold her. “I’m sorry, she’s just- Sana.” “It’s okay.” Chaeyoung giggled. “So your lips have a boo boo.” “No. I mean they were a little chapped the other day, but they are fine now-”
“I’m kidding Tzuyu.” Chayeoung grinned. “Relax.” “Yeah. Sorry.” Tzuyu took a deep breath. “I need to go let the dog out, I’ll be right back.” “Take your time.” Chaeyoung smiled. “We do have all night.”
xx
Tzuyu should have listened to her instincts. Her sisters were little menaces, she should have known to be more suspicious of them. Once she got out of the stupid closet, both of them were going to be so grounded. Maybe even worse. “Are you sure you can’t get it open?” Chaeyoung asked. “You can try.” Tzuyu watched as Chaeyoung went to the closet door, gently pushing on the stuck handle. “Nayeon! Momo! Sana! Are you still there?” The only response they got was giggling. “Please let us out.” “Not until you kiss.” Nayeon answered.
“What?!” “Like in the drama mom watched with us yesterday.”
“No! Nayeon let us out.” “Nu-uh.” “I’m so sorry.” Tzuyu sighed as she turned to Chaeyoung. “I can call our moms.” “No, it’s okay. My mom needs tonight.” Chaeyoung nodded. “She doesn’t let loose very much, she needs to every once in a while.”
“Okay.” Tzuyu sighed. “So what do we do.” “We could kiss.” Chaeyoung smiled
“What-no. We don’t- she’s eight. We do not have to listen to her.” “Well, we could just tell her we kissed. She won’t know the difference right.” “I can hear you!” They heard from the other side of the door. “You have to kiss on the lips!” “Here, just kiss my cheek, she won’t know.” Chaeyoung whispered to her. Tzuyu nodded, if she had to do this, this would be the easiest way to get it over with. “Nayeon, we’re going to kiss now so let us out.” She moved to kiss Chaeyoung’s cheek, but right when that happened, she heard the front door close. Chaeyoung turned her head at the sound, and both of them were surprised when their lips brushed against each other.
“Tzuyu! Chaeyoung!” Tzuyu and Chaeyoung blushed as they looked at each other. They heard the sounds of the door quickly being opened as light flooded into the dark closest. Both of them were too shocked to do anything but sit and stare at each other in shock. Both of their faces were bright red as they heard the sound of footsteps coming closer.
“Mommy!” Their spell was broken by Sana’s screaming and they both quickly moved to get out of the closest.
“You guys are back early.” Chaeyoung commented, a blush still on her face as they addressed her parents. “Yeah, it was a little too crowded so we decided to come back here.” Jihyo answered. “Why are you two all red?” “They kissed!” Sana answered. “On the lips, like you and mommy do.” Tzuyu cursed Sana. How did she know “No we didn’t!” Both of them answered a little too quickly. Their moms looked between them, and then each other, and both of them knew they suspected something.
“Sure.” Even Mina was smirking at them. Tzuyu had to say, that meant a lot. Mina wasn't normally one to tease her, not like her mama or Aunt Jeongyeon.
“Wait since mommies are home early does that mean Momoring can't stay the night?” Nayeon asked, and honestly, Tzuyu was happy about the change of subject.
“Well…” Jeongyeon trailed off. “If Momo wants to stay, and your parents are okay with it, she can.”
“Mama, can she stay? Please.” Nayeon begged.
“Sure she can kiddo.” Jihyo ruffled Nayeon’s hair teasingly.
“Please stay Momoring.” Nayeon begged.
“Yeah, stay.” Sana added.
“Okay.” Momo shrugged, earning cheers from Nayeon and Sana.
“Anyway, you two are relieved of babysitting duty if you want to go talk.” Jihyo turned to Tzuyu.
“No, I’m kind of tired. Mom, can we go home soon?” Tzuyu couldn't help but be a little hurt by Chaeyoung’s question. Though really, she shouldn't be shocked. She also wanted to process what had happened, and it would probably be best if she was away from Chaeyoung.
“Yeah, sure kiddo. We can leave now.” Jeongyeon smiled at her. “Momo, be good, okay?”
“Okay.” Momo nodded, high giving Jeongyeon when she held her hand out.
“Goodnight Momo. I’ll be back tomorrow.”
“Bye mommy.” Momo waved. “Bye Unnie.”
“Bye Momo.” Chaeyoung waved. “Bye Tzuyu.” Tzuyu couldn't do anything but wave asChaeyoung left.
“Mommy!” Tzuyu was pulled out of her thoughts by Sana’s screaming.
“Hi Sana.” Mina caught Sana just in time with a smile. “Oh, what happened.” Mina moved Sana’s chin so she was looking up,inspecting the wound on her chin. “Oh and your arms too. We only left you for a few hours.”
“We played tag! Nayeon Unnie pushed me.”
“I did not push you.” Nayeon rolled her eyes.
“Yeah. And I fell on mama’s ca-cac-”
“Cactus?” Nayeon finished the word for her sister.
“Not my cactus! This is the first one that's stayed alive!” Tzuyu was not listening to her family, even if they were being loud. All she could think about was the feeling of her lips on Chaeyoung’s.

“Hey Tzu.” Tzuyu sighed when she heard Mina knock on her door. “Can I come in?” Tzuyu’s only answer was a groan. It had been a week since the closet incident, and Chaeyoung had not talked to her sense. Even at school, she would rush from one class to the next, and whenever Tzuyu tried to approach her she magically found someone else to be interested in. Tzuyu couldn't help but feel like it was her fault. She was sure Chaeyoung was uncomfortable. “Rough day?”
“Sort of.” It had been rough. From Chaeyoung ignoring her, to her math test (which she definitely bombed), and Sana being sick and sneezing all over her, her day was horrible.
“I’m sorry.” Mina sat down on the corner of Tzuyu’s bed. “Your sisters are asleep. I brought you some hand sanitizer and some vitamins. It's how your Mama and I survive when one of you gets sick.
“Thanks.” Tzuyu looked up from her pillow.
“So, Chaeyoung?”
“Mom please.” Tzuyu sighed.
“I know you probably don't want to talk about it. But, it's better to talk about it then to keep it in. It doesn’t have to be with me, or right now. But just, talking to someone would be beneficial, don’t you think?” Tzuyu hummed in response. Mina was right, she usually was, but Tzuyu did not want to admit it.
“I just- Why do you think she is ignoring me?” “She’s ignoring you?” Mina asked.
“Yes.” Tzuyu sighed. “Every time I try to talk with her, she has somewhere else she needs to be, apparently.” “I’m sorry.” Mina sighed. “Do you think it has to do with the fact you kissed?” Tzuyu’s cheeks heated up at the question. She knew their lie hadn’t even been close to being believable, but she didn’t expect someone to address it so soon. “I- it was an accident.” Tzuyu sighed. “I- Nayeon was being, well you know Nayeon, and well I meant to kiss her cheek- But…”
“I see.” Mina nodded. “And now she hates me. And we’re never going to be friends again and Sunday night dinner is going to be so awkward.” “Tzuyu.” Mina giggled at her. “Chaeyoung does not hate you.” “She does.” “I don’t think she’s capable of hating you.” Mina nodded. “I know it feels like the world is ending, and I’m sure Chaeyoung feels like it too. And this may not be what you want to hear, but some time is good for both of you. To sort out your feelings. And when you are both ready, you can talk.” “I- What if she never wants to talk.” “She will.” Mina smiled at Tzuyu, taking one of her hands gently. “Trust me.” “Okay.” Tzuyu sighed, letting out the day’s frustration. Her mom was good at that, making her feel less stressed and overwhelmed. “Mina! Oh, you're in here.” Jihyo poked her head into Tzuyu’s room and Tzuyu was a bit thankful she didn’t overhear their earlier conversation. Mina was always the parent she was planning on going to for romantic advice. She loved Jihyo to infinity, but Mina was the better choice for things like crushes. “Nayeon just threw up all over the floor. I’m going to clean it, but can you check on Sana? She needs another dose of medicine.” “Sure.” Mina squeezed Tzuyu’s hand.
“Being a parent sounds really glamorous.” Both Mina and Jihyo laughed at Tzuyu’s statement. “You two really make me want to have kids one day.” “It’s not usually like this.” Jihyo shrugged. “Sometimes they both throw up on the carpet.” “Yeah, your making me really want kids one day Mama.” “I know.” Jihyo giggled. “You are going to have to talk about that to Chaeyoung though, aren’t you?”

Chaeyoung finally talks to her for the first time a few days later. Tzuyu was just about to get in the shower when she got a text, but she was glad she was able to respond quickly. She just hated how terrifying the phrase “we need to talk” was but she was more scared than she had ever been in her life.

“Tzuyu, calm down.” Tzuyu looked at Chaeyoung in shock. They were up on the roof again, and Tzuyu thinks it’s ironic this was the place Chaeyoung told her she only liked her as a friend. The roof had always been their place. Tzuyu remembers being eleven and confessing that she had always felt a little bit off in her family. Her parents had just told her they were pregnant with Sana, and she couldn't help but be a little bit out of place. Nayeon, and the new baby, we're both her parents' real kids. She couldn't help but feel like if she messed up or did something bad, they wouldn't want her anymore, as they had their own kids now. Chaeyoung, only a month older than Tzuyu, listened to her fully and then told her that her parents would never get rid of her. She told her that before they adopted Tzuyu, they had talked about her a lot to Chaeyoung's mom and how excited they were to have her in the family. Plus, Chaeyoung reassured her that even if her parents did get rid of her, she could get her mom to adopt Tzuyu. Afterwards, Tzuyu talked to her parents with Chaeyoung’s support and they worked it all out. Not long after, their next roof chat involved Chaeyoung talking about her parents divorce. How even after all this time she still wasn't used to her parents living in different houses or the fact her mom would get all tense when someone mentioned their dad. Tzuyu had never experienced her parents getting divorced, but she tried her best to be a good friend to Chaeyoung, like her parents had told her to be when she first heard about it. She was surprised that she was of any help, but Chaeyoung told her that Tzuyu had helped her more than she knew.
“Sorry. My default is stress.” Tzuyu pretended the gentle comforting hand on her thigh was a dream.
“I know, but calm down.” Chaeyoung giggled. “God, you're so cute.” “What?” Tzuyu's heart skipped a beat at the compliment. “I guess I will go first, since I’ve been the one, busy recently. I just- I always thought you were pretty and cute and charming and I always wanted to be around you. And every time I told Dahyun Unnie, she would laugh in my face saying it was “baby’s first crush” or something. I don’t know, you've met my sister.”
“Yeah… She teases me too.” “So rude right? Anyway, she always says I have a crush, and that I could never live without you. And really, the more I think about it. The more she may be right.” “She is?” All Tzuyu’s brain could focus on was the words her and crush. “I mean, yeah. I won’t tell her cause she gets insufferable, but yes.” Chaeyoung smiled. “And I thought, hey this will ruin our friendship. But after the kiss, I’m worried it's already ruined.”
“No! I mean- no.” Tzuyu nodded, her face bright red as she looked anywhere but Chaeyoung. “I mean… It's not ruined.”
“Oh yeah? Even after this?”
“No.” Tzuyu blushed.”I kind of…Have a crush on you too.” Chaeyoung looked at her in surprise.
“Really?” Chaeyoung asked.
“Yeah.” Neither could look at each other as their faces burned in embarrassment.
“Cool.” Chaeyoung awkwardly coughed as she drummed her fingers on her knee. “Cool. Um… So what should we do now?”
“I-I don't know.” Tzuyu admitted.
“I mean, we could kiss again.” Chaeyoung offered. “Just you know- to see if we still like it or whatever-” Tzuyu cut her nervous rambling off with a kiss.
There, under the shining stars Tzuyu felt like everything in the world was perfect, if just for a moment.
