Challenge 122 : Medical Illustration: Unseen Conditions

In our lives, we meet family, friend, colleagues, strangers; thousands upon millions of people. Everyday people that to the naked eye, look like their normal happy selves. However, we might never know what medical health conditions that one might have underneath. The assumption of how we perceive people that might not have a medical condition that presents itself physically; doesn’t mean that they’re not living with a condition. In the end, the main message is that we just need to be respectful and be understand to everyone.

Challenge 122: Medical Illustration: Prescriptions for Mental Health I decided to do a conceptual piece for this challenge, and it was... well... a challenge! I don’t often do work like this anymore so getting the imagery to convey the meaning I intended was quite a journey. I’m pleased with the end result, though.  This illustration is representing the significance of medication in the world of mental health. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, and when paired with therapy, can help you greatly in reclaiming yourself from the depths of those dark places. Mental health issues will always exist for those who suffer from them, but healthcare options like therapy and medication brings the light back onto other aspects of your life. Caitlin

Challenge 122: Medical Illustration: DNA Research and Development

For this challenge I wanted to complete a concept I did that I really wanted to see come into a final. The basis of this illustration is about DNA research and how researchers work with scientists and psychologists to problem solve and come up with solutions that may not be very obvious based on already known existing information on what we know about DNA. While many people tend to only look on the surface when it comes to medical research, there is usually very little creative thinking in the process or acknowledgment of how powerful the human mind really can be. There are studies where DNA can be altered and reprogrammed by the human mind itself through genetic coding, which shows sometimes you have to look beyond what is physically there in order to find a solution and not limit our minds so we can open doors to solutions that were never thought possible by limiting the thoughts only to what we know.

Challenge 122: Medical Illustration: Pelvis Hey guys!  Did you know your pelvis is a withered alien with many eye sockets?  Because that’s exactly what I learned from this challenge.  Think about that next time you’re moving your hips around trying to be sexy.

Challenge 122: Medical Illustration: What Gives You Heart

This evolved a bit- started with a realistic heart. Then realized the heart is, in my opinion, a really ugly organ. Gave it a simplistic symbolic border to make it cleaner. Settled on a mix between an antique diagram (font choice) and modern diagram (accuracy of titles) since the antique versions I found had incorrect placement of some of the sections of the heart. Was both a learning experience and a little challenging for me, but I’m pretty happy with the end result.

Challenge 122: Medical Illustration: Pull The Plug, Please

For this challenge I chose to do something a bit more editorial focusing on the issue of physician assisted death. I think being able to chose how you go provides a lot of ease and freedom when dealing with terminal illness or certain conditions that come with old age. I’m glad to see this topic gaining more focus in our current news cycle, and I hope we can continue to make strides in getting PAD legalized in ever state.

Challenge 122: Medical Illustration: Crisis

I haven’t done any very conceptual illustration recently, so I wanted to stretch my creative muscles for this challenge. This image depicts the dangers of over prescription and over-reliance on high strength opioid painkillers-one of the factors that has lead to the present opioid crisis. The pills appear like mines below the surface, and the figure in the rowboat is unknowingly moving into very dangerous waters. I also went back to traditional printmaking techniques this time with a reduction linoleum print. Sometimes I need a break from drawing, and this is a really fun way to get away from that while still creating art.
