As someone who before the pandemic was only just starting to toy with buying certain staples ahead of time, it’s been really different grocery shopping lately.
In the beforetimes, I used to go to the grocery at least twice a week, not planning too much ahead, just getting mainly ingredients for the the next meal that would last a couple days. I live about 5 minutes’ drive away from a grocery store, but I’d also love visiting different groceries for different types of items. I loved taking my time perusing the shelves, clipping digital coupons, smelling fruit to see if it was ripe, inspecting each vegetable, discovering new things. As someone who’s always worked from home, it was an outing to me.
Now, we order online, and do curbside pickup or have things delivered because we have the luxury of not putting ourselves in harm’s way just to be able to eat. It may seem like a trivial thing, but grocery trips are something I miss.
All that said, the thing I learned from the pandemic is the importance of keeping a well-stocked pantry. And to be extremely grateful for the giant package of toilet paper my partner snagged at Costco in January that’s still going strong.
